I was looking to listen to Papillons, hadn't heard these pieces in a while. I searched on TH-cam and then I saw "Claudio Arrau plays Schumann Papillons op.2". I didn't search anymore. Best version I ever heard.
There are no words, this is genius. Listening or playing this piece always is a great emotion, a marvellous journey. In particular I find extraordinary the Final, when the initial theme returns and slowly shades like a merry gathering going away...almost a dream, a memory rather than something real.
BRAVO a tutti ma SUPER BRAVO a lei ......I listened to this song played by Parahia, Richter, Arrau, Sofronitsky, Horszowski, Kempff, Novaes and Demus, I admit, of course, that I'll never be able to play like them and even to go near them. I also liked the variety of ways and the various sensitivities of each of them in addressing and interpreting this beautiful piece of Schumann but I believe that the interpretation of Novaes is absolutely the best, she giving a great range of shades in the steps 'Piano' and 'Forte' without being academic, but with a feminine vivacity, grace and a lightness, very suitable to this piece ... BRAVO to all but SUPER BRAVO to her..
ariana amaducci I am NOT Brazilian but I adore Guiomar Novaes' recording of music that Schumann wrote when he was young, happy and in love. Though Arrau is excellent too.
First of all, let us note the genius of Schumann. This is only his op. 2 !!!!! As for the interpretation, between all those which I know, I see only Yves Nat which could be compared to Arrau. Nat plays a bit more quickly and lighter. Arrau is very analytical here. That can be an advantage. It depends inndeed from everybody's taste.
A piece for which I have great affecetion in a fresh, direct performance without self-indulgence. I think Richter finds more poetry but this demonstrates how much is already in Schumann's score even without any additional probing.
I mean, this Interpretation is really nice and musical but sometimes it plays a bit too soft for me. Try listen to Robert Casadesus. It’s my favorite recording of the papillons. Arrau takes second place...
Come on. He probably thinks 'dislike' means 'love'. It happens every day on TH-cam. Misunderstandings between Fijians and Norwegians, between native speakers of Guaraní and Flemish, between Brits and Yanks... All with a poor grasp of the same language.😄

I dig your words, really beautiful description of the piece.
The best interpretation of "Papillons" I ever heard. Such a beautiful melody.

This piece of music is an absolute mastery! He plays it so incredibly!!!
The emotions of this interpretation are unbelievable! His touch on the keybord is a heavenly touch. Thanks for posting this marvellous gift!
A humane interpretation. The "sound" is beautiful.
"Tecnica pianistica fantastica! Uso del peso delle braccia, senza aggredire il tasto'... ❤❤❤ Giuseppe
Very well played by Mr Arrau. One of the greatest pianists I know.
Claudio the most prodigius pianist and perhaps the best century XX
This piece touched my heart!
Most delightful. A proper interpretation of the score

This makes me happy!!
Really love this dance suite. I can tell I’m going to love Schumann. Arrau also plays it very well. 3:22 and 5:22 sound inspired by Chopin as well.

Wonderful !!!!
Wonderful
ARRAU EMPREGA A INFLEXÃO MAIS HARMONIOSA ÀS SUAS INTERPRETACÕES.
So sweet

Davidsbundler, Kreisleriana, Humoreske, Fantasie pieces, Fantasy, Nachtstucke, Novelletten...

@J. K. You are fully right. This is typically a French mistake.
Where can I buy a CD with this interpretation? I cant seem to find it in Spotify
Try on Amazon. I am sure you can find it.
Great playing! I just uploaded this piece too :)

then what do you like from Schumann?

nice playing but I really hate music that gets cut off in the middle.
Then you'd better listen to music from the classical period if you don't mind
At nine minutes...
:)
best
I mean, this Interpretation is really nice and musical but sometimes it plays a bit too soft for me.
Try listen to Robert Casadesus. It’s my favorite recording of the papillons. Arrau takes second place...
Beautiful depth of tone but the playing often lacks energy, especially in the slower moments.
I much prefer Richter's version, also on TH-cam.
Hmmm... I do not like this interpretation that much. It didn't seem musical enough in the slower, sweeter sections.
As much as I like Schumann, I intensely dislike this piece...
why
yes, why ?
