  • In this lecture we provide an application for everything we have learned about planar dynamical systems so far. We consider a model of competition for food and resources by rabbits and sheep. The model is a type of Lotka-Volterra system for species competition and incorporates components of the logistic model we explored in 1D. We analyze the fixed points of the system and their stability, then use this to sketch the phase plane near these hyperbolic fixed points. We then consider the vector field to sketch out the global phase portrait. Important concepts such as separatrices, stable/unstable manifolds, and basins of attraction are introduced.
