Which aperture did you use for the stills? Fuji lens softer under what f? To get the most out of the sony I guess it has to be at least the a7 iii and then it goes expensive. I can get a new XT-3 for ~1000 USD in Sweden and for that I only get the a7 ii with pale AF. I can get a used XT-3 or h1 (same as used a7i price) for 700 and have a lot more money left for lenses.
That was one thing that struck me about the Nikon 800mm, though it lacks an arca swiss mount, it is the most comfortable long lens handle I have experience, being curved to fit your hand very nicely. I replaced the stubby block of metal Nikon provided on my 200-400 very quickly with a wimberly handle. Better, but slippery with the wrong gloves and still not as comfortable as the 800mm, which doesn't even need the comfort since it is apparently filled with helium.
You mentioned that the Fuji is softer but at 6:00-6:06 mark some of the green leaves and brown cones look very sharp and crisp. Looks like you are focused slightly further or closer than the yellow bird.
I really enjoyed your interview!...BUT you've made in my opinion one crucial error: You should have used the A1 (or possibly the A7 IV), as the excellent A7SIII color are slightly different than those two models; I would love to see you do a video showing this lens and the video differences/color differences between those three Sony models
Wow those red fishes conversation cracked me up! Very well done! And that was a nice catch indeed! Referring to Mark Smith with this combo to get a better video stability you better to put the tripod foot on the palm of your hand and you can easily change the focus or the zoom with the tip of a finger if needed. For carrying it around also don't turn the foot upwards. Just keep it in your left hand and while the camera is upside down in the front you only need to bring it up and boom you are ready to shoot!
Great video as ever. That clip with the tern with fish in its beak was brutal but amazing. But honestly speaking...I watched this both on my laptop and my 65inch TV in the hope there was something else for me to "need" and I am really not buying into this massive full-frame difference. Yeah - it was subtle in some shots I guess, but really not worth it on two fronts 1) cost and 2) portability. I have the X-T4 with the 70-300mm and this video does not convince me to change either. It is not that I can't afford it, it just seems to be chasing something that really is not game changing, and due to the size of the setups, for me would become anti-photography/videography devices :)
You got some sweet bird footage, and I'm not even joking. Those kinglets are so hard to capture. You can get a nice arca swiss replacement tripod foot for the 200-600.
Well now you know why I shoot olympus. As a wildlife photographer there is no better camera than the OM-1. For me the weight of carting the system around all day makes a huge difference. Olympus glass is fantastic and cheap now that everyone thinks M4/3 is dead.
The OM-1 looks a great option for wildlife photo & video shooters. Even if you use the cheaper Olympus 100-400mm F5-6.3 I reckon you'd still get great results :-)
Hey, philip bloom just released a two-part video on sony autofocus settings, might be useful for you as well, and it would be fun to hear you report on what you learned!
I so appreciate your reviews. Your experience of both lenses is similar to my own. It ultimately comes down to which "look" appeals to the user. Personally, I prefer Fuji, but I agree with everything you said about the Sony 200-600 and agree its a great lens. One thing I don't like about dealing with my own G.A.S. issues is that there really isn't a "bad" camera system, just different. I think the best recommendation you gave was "if you are happy with your gear, don't compare it to other gear." I agree with you. I've talked myself into and out of many camera systems. I had to step away from buying gear, take a deep breath, and just enjoy the gear I have. Thanks Kasey! Keep up the great wildlife vide work!
A7IV and the 200-600 great combo. I love it. Replace the foot with a promediagear foot. It’s longer and more comfy. The PMG foot is also arca Swiss for when you decide to embrace the tripod or monopod.
I actually made the deal of the century of buying the Sony 200-600mm brand new for only 635 OMR ($1,651)! Quite a steal. Well, it's still sold cheaper here in Oman brand new in that same shop vs US at 670 OMR ($1,742).
I am honestly considering selling my Nikon z6 and lenses and just fully embracing Fuji. I have the x-t4 and 100-400, and it is just enjoyable to use. Out of camera my results are always better than the z6, and apart from noise at high iso I don’t really notice any differences in IQ. I just can’t shake the attitude that FF is better. I know that it is superior but the margin is not that great. That is the one thing that stops me doing it. Will I live to regret it? That is what I can’t work out, and what remains to be seen.
In what way should FF be so much better? I think that both sensors deliver absolutely brilliant results these days. And both systems are designed for professional use... I think it is simply a question of taste... Porsche or Ferrari apple or pear... You have more fun using the Fuji? Then use it, it's a very simple calculation ;)
I've had the 200-600 Sony for a while and I love the results. You are so right on all the issues- it's heavy and clearly not balanced. I will say, having a battery grip, it handles much better. Sometimes I'll snap it onto a tripod just to give my arm a break. It is, however, worth every penny. It's a fantastic wildlife and sport lens, and arguably the best one available for the length.
@Camera Conspiracies Hey please respond, is it worth to buy XT-4 or should I wait and save more for A7S3? There is a promotion that ends tomorrow they are giving a free Weebill S with XT4 so if you could answer that will be great! Or if you have any other suggestion.
It'd be crazy to get an XT4 just to get a free Weebill. You can see his video here. The image is soft and underwhelming. Wait for the XH-2 at least, then you'll get upgraded technology. Look at how good the images from the OM-1 look and that's a micro 4 loser. Imagine what Fuji can do with APSC. Also, the stabilization on the XH-2 will be better, the sharpness will be better. The XT4 is aging rapidly. Future proof your purchase
On the animal eye detect thing, is it possible that it's failing sometimes with birds that have a black face and tiny dark eyes that you can't really see? On some of those, it doesn't look like there was much to detect. Edit: or do they just not have it, I dunno, I confuse easy.
Please test the high end camcorders for wildlife video. But I know you dont like camcorders😅. I have the canon xf400 and its really good. Its much more user friendly for run n gun video. Also ad a mic to record real time audio. Thats a nice extra to actually have the audio from the birds etc…
@@miketipton678 Yes. it does. Would you like some examples? (sorry, to be clear, the A7IV has features that the A1 and a7siii don't have, but they should)
@@ozwrangler.c The animal eye detect is the big one (not on a7sii but on a7iv), and the a7iv has this really cool new implementation of focus peaking that I very much like. The other is a software compensation for focus breathing. (available on a7iv but not on a7siii nor a1).
You complained about the blackbird looking "pure black" on the Fuji but not so on the Sony. The difference is from the Sony's much better dynamic range, which enables capture of the plumage's iridescence and details. Sony kicked Fuji up and down the street in terms of image quality. But the reverse is true in usability. The A7S III grip is too pinchy against the lens. Sony didn't improve that until they released the A7R IV. The lens weighs a ton but 600mm FF is hard to beat. The bird at 8:10 is a Double-crested Cormorant in non-breeding plumage. Pelagic Cormorants live only on the Pacific coast and have more delicate heads and beaks. Nobody hand-carries a camera with telephoto zoom lens by the tripod mount. Those sharp edges allow mounting the camera on an Arca Swiss-compatible tripod head without an adapter. Get thee a Peak Design or Black Rapid shoulder strap, not that $19 POS you tried before.
Good comparison-the Sony footage at 4K 120fps looks sharper than the Fuji at Full HD 240fps for sure. I have the Fujifilm X-S10 which has the same AF system as the X-T4 I think but I discovered that you can use C-AF subject tracking for stills but not for video! You can only select 'Area' which is a small box or 'Multi' where the camera automatically selects the area to focus on which is not ideal! I hope the upcoming X-H2s will have better AF system with bird detection :-)
You will get use to the 200-600 weight. My favorite long zoom by far. I don't like the Sony 100-400. Feels like a dumbbell on your camera. The lens is not short or long. The 200-600 is the best and add a 1.4 when you need it. The Wimberley Ap-620 lens foot is a must but make sure it is the one for the 200-600. You are spot on with the crappy foot that comes with the lens.
i just watched the whole video because I couldn't believe seeing the one guy holding a super tele lens, who was deciding between lenses because of 20g difference a year or two back :))
I know you love suggestions SOOO....signma 150-600 works pretty darn good on sony with sigma adaptor. I know you hate adaptors so try that on an R5 with animal detect. It's solid in my uses.
I love your videos my friend! 🤪😂😂😂 yes when is the eye detection with the a7S3 currently I work with the a7111 and hesitate to get the a7S3 do you recommend it to me??? Merci 🎥🤪🤪
I found the 200-600 overwhelmingly heavy at first, but now it's not so bad. When I go out with it, that's all I'm taking, other than maybe a tiny 15mm ultrawide in case there's the possibility of some landscape thing. Hand holding it for a couple hours does make my left wrist ache thou, Might have to go to a monopod. Will be interesting to see the results you get with the 1x (and 2x) TCs on the A7s3. I think of any of the bodies, it's the most likely to work well with the 200-600 + 2x if you can get one. With the A1 I just prefer to use APSC mode.
Back in your fun Thailand days flip flop footwear comparisons you could be relied upon but look at you know, top end camera gear blue light pulling muscles having fun the lot. Tony, Battersea watch out the Conspiracy is coming to bite your. Thanks for the video excellent.
Love my 200-600 -- it's a bargain even at list price. For video, it always has the 2xTC attached to it, but it also never comes off the tripod. For hand-held shooting the 100-400 is the better choice.
I have owned both lenses, and don’t really have a problem hand-holding the 200-600, which I usually carry with me on my daily 2 hour hikes/walks. While the 200-600 is heavier, it also internally zooms, which I find easier to walk with as my 100-400 was always creeping open. In any event, both are amazing lenses and work well with the 1.4 TC for photo and video.
@@garfieldirwin No question that the tripod is better for video, but I often go distances where a tripod isn’t convenient, so learning handheld video makes some sense. One handheld expert is Mark Smith whose video work with the 600 and 200-600 is amazing. I can only aspire.
You should definitely put the Olympus 75-300 next to the Sony lens. I can't believe how big that is! With that, at least you know why you're leaving the house.
I watch your videos, they are always great 👍🏻 besides that, they are funny (so also are you) My predicament: As a Fuji user, having the X T4 with the 70-300 mm lens for birds, and wanting to probably invest in the 150-600mm fuji lens because of the reach. And again probably later, the X H2s, because of birds 🐦 I am also looking at Sony.... The Sony 200-600 mm at 600 stops at 6.8 while the fuji at 600 stops at f8 So, Sony: more light, brighter The Sony A74 cost almost the same at the X H2s, but Sony is full frame So again, Sony: more light, brighter Also again, because of the f stops and the full frame, Sony would create better background blur My brain says Sony My heart says Fuji Please help me out: X H2s + 150-600mm or A74 + 200-600mm (PS. I known crop sensor will give more reach) Just asking about IQ bokeh and brightness Please explain in English I don't understand science and math
@@cameraconspiracies Fair enough… I should have clarified one at a time… :) I don’t have a problem using the camera grip and stabilising hand… but it is totally up to you.
Get yourself a Fuji 200MM f/2. That's a dandy! Yep, ~$6 grand but it's a beauty! That thing works! Maybe a used one can be found for less money now; I don't know... unlikely though; the good "stuff" holds its value. It's a beauty... performance and looks! I might, only might, put it up against a Leica... might. Toneh.
The Fuji colors look soo much better they really do imo. Yet another video that wants me to get a Camera. Why do this to me. I see what you go through.
@@jlinc187 Yes, but it is the best use of 8 bit out there using full sensor readout with no pixel binning and grades much better than most 8 bit.. Gerald Undone has mentioned this as well. Personally feel Casey is destined for the Z9 or possibly the forth coming aps-c flagship from Nikon.
Those Fuji colours are pretty good there, i wouldn't mind a bit softer footage if that saved me colour grading in post. That yellow mohawk bird footage is excellent.
I want to see him try m4loser OM1 with the 150-400… maybe even the poverty 100-400 if he can’t get his hands on the 150-400. Great bird af. I’ve seen bird videos shot with these that look better than anything he’s ever posted despite being m4losers.
Have you looked at the Sigma 150-600 or 60-600? I know they are older lenses. I don't think the Sigma 60-600 is very sharp at 60, but is supposed to be pretty good at 600.
I took the shoe off the 200-600; it’s way better now in handheld. Handheld 4K 120p can get you solid footage. sometime when I film from hitting record while in manual mode (and auto focus c) that the animal eye focus is working even though not showing. There are a few things lacking from the A1 that I don’t get .. where is the 960 fps that my zv1 does? Animal eye in video which they can do, stop animation, Timelapse stitching in camera… and where is in camera editing on the alpha series ? (Am I just breezing over it or is it not there?)
@@cameraconspiracies ah okay, for the gyro data stabilization? I'm quite amazed with how well it works with the in lens stabilization in setting 2 on the a7r3
I had the Fuji 100-400 and could never get sharp images out of it. I remember an owl on a fence post not moving and damn! couldn't get sharp images. Probably me but still. I own the Sony 200-600 and have much better success. I shoot it with the a9ii, stills not video so I can't attest to that.
Also can you explain this to megrim physics point of view? So you set up for 240fps or 1/240. The you set up your shutter speed to 1/2000. So that means you have frame lasting 0.0005 seconds. Within each frame it takes a shot lasting 0.00005 seconds. So the image capture for single frame is massively shorter than the length of the frame itself?
(Thank you Kasey -- not even 2 minutes in) "First impression of the size. I can't believe this thing. It-it's heavy, it's noticeably heavy." That's what *SHE* said.... *NEVER*
The Sony lens feet are... bad. Your can get various better ones from third party companies to replace them. It's an extra cost but they're comfier and they work better. I have no idea why Sony keeps on making those bad feet for their long lenses. They don't even have a product to sell you to fix the issues. Usually a company will bundle a crap version and then dangle a better add on purchase in front of you. Sony just bundles the lacking feet and then goes off for lunch and forgets about it.
Isn't the bird your talking about Fuji having the "true black" supposed to have iridescent black feathers sort of like how crows have them? If so then Sony's colors for that scene were actually more true to life.

On the animal eye detect thing, is it possible that it's failing sometimes with birds that have a black face and tiny dark eyes that you can't really see? On some of those, it doesn't look like there was much to detect. Edit: or do they just not have it, I dunno, I confuse easy.
It doesn't work at all for video.
Oh...well, wtf!
Hold the 200-600 by the lens foot and you'll have a good angle on both the zoom and focus
Yea real comfortable.
@@cameraconspiracies it's a huge heavy lens. If you want comfortable, throw it on a tripod :p
This guy is stupid the Sony is definitely better
And you af not manual 🙄
Please test the high end camcorders for wildlife video. But I know you dont like camcorders😅. I have the canon xf400 and its really good. Its much more user friendly for run n gun video. Also ad a mic to record real time audio. Thats a nice extra to actually have the
audio from the birds etc…
No joke about Sony A7siii firmware. (and A1!)
It's insane that the a7iv has more features than their flagships do.
it doesn't
@@miketipton678 Yes. it does.
Would you like some examples?
(sorry, to be clear, the A7IV has features that the A1 and a7siii don't have, but they should)
@@david.stachon I’m considering which Sony, so am interested in examples (not trying to be a smartarse)
@@ozwrangler.c The animal eye detect is the big one (not on a7sii but on a7iv), and the a7iv has this really cool new implementation of focus peaking that I very much like.
The other is a software compensation for focus breathing. (available on a7iv but not on a7siii nor a1).
Waiting for your manifesto on newer Fuji 150-600 vs the Sony 200-600 champ. Maybe just maybe the new Fuji competes with full frame😊
The bird/fish saga was the cat's pyjamas!
Fuji's colours way more beautiful, just more beautiful footage although less sharp
@@dddboom yeah? Well, you know, that's just like, uh, your opinion, man.
The people want to see a comparison between the Fujinon 150-600mm lens and the Tamron 150-600mm lens with a finger adapter on the xt4.
there is a handle mod you can get to rest your palm on while shooting.
The 200-600 is a great lens you missed a bargain there ! 😬👍
That plate looks like it's even worse for carrying, very hard edges.
@@cameraconspiracies I promise you, ten times better
i just watched the whole video because I couldn't believe seeing the one guy holding a super tele lens, who was deciding between lenses because of 20g difference a year or two back :))
The angle of the dangle is a vital spec IMHO.
Merci 🎥🤪🤪
Get a Leofoto replacement foot then the arm sling that has a quick release to carry 200-600
Lets do another comparison when the xh2s come out. 4k120 now we’re talking
Cassy ....is a replacement for David Attenborough....Sir Cassy 👍🏼...At least i dont feel like natures out to kill me when i watch these tubes
Love my 200-600 -- it's a bargain even at list price. For video, it always has the 2xTC attached to it, but it also never comes off the tripod. For hand-held shooting the 100-400 is the better choice.
Agreed 100-400 a better all day walkabout lens !
@@LeeDillion For stills, yes, but a tripod is best when shooting video.
@@garfieldirwin No question that the tripod is better for video, but I often go distances where a tripod isn’t convenient, so learning handheld video makes some sense. One handheld expert is Mark Smith whose video work with the 600 and 200-600 is amazing. I can only aspire.
Got the 200-600 for 1600 on edu with the payboo card( no tax). Best deal in town.
Yo - these kind of videos on your Stern Beats channel. Get to it.
You should definitely put the Olympus 75-300 next to the Sony lens. I can't believe how big that is! With that, at least you know why you're leaving the house.
I watch your videos, they are always great 👍🏻 besides that, they are funny (so also are you)
My predicament:
As a Fuji user, having the X T4 with the 70-300 mm lens for birds, and wanting to probably invest in the 150-600mm fuji lens because of the reach. And again probably later, the X H2s, because of birds 🐦
I am also looking at Sony....
The Sony 200-600 mm at 600 stops at 6.8 while the fuji at 600 stops at f8
So, Sony: more light, brighter
The Sony A74 cost almost the same at the X H2s, but Sony is full frame
So again, Sony: more light, brighter
Also again, because of the f stops and the full frame, Sony would create better background blur
My brain says Sony
My heart says Fuji
Please help me out:
X H2s + 150-600mm or
A74 + 200-600mm
(PS. I known crop sensor will give more reach)
Just asking about IQ bokeh and brightness
Please explain in English
I don't understand science and math
So, what did you do? Looking into the same options.. :)
@gerwim so far, just stuck with what I have
Feather definition and exposure of the red-wing blackbird is so much better than the Fuji.
Really loved the footage. I’m in Ottawa and see a lot of the same birds. So cute!
6:16 madlad walking on gravel with wet feet
Try them both after removing the mounting collar… they will feel better in the hands.
Then you can't carry them lol.
Nikon Z6II for the best of both worlds. Colors, sharpness, and STAB!! 😉
Does that still only have 8bit color for internal recording?
@@jlinc187 Yes, but it is the best use of 8 bit out there using full sensor readout with no pixel binning and grades much better than most 8 bit.. Gerald Undone has mentioned this as well. Personally feel Casey is destined for the Z9 or possibly the forth coming aps-c flagship from Nikon.
@@filmstudiojapanDOTcom oh I didn't realize that. A friend of mine had one and I thought for sure he said it only shot long gop internally.
@@filmstudiojapanDOTcom how about color banding is it good
I keep spammin him with z6ii comments here and there but yet he refuses to listen just because the lack of flip screen 😄
So in conclusion: You liker colours more? Fuji, You like sharpness more? Sony!
You're 20% there. Get a shoulder sling for when one has a shoulder injury. Trust me, you'll be happy you did so years later.
We all wanna see that combo tested for sure, it will save you back too :-)
That’s the thing I struggled with the most on the A1 & 200-600. The stabilisation is so much shakier than Canon or Nikons that I have used
Would you go r5, r3, or Nikon z9 if you could only have one camera with no previous gear?
Birds love pine seeds.
(and more!) "It's so much softer. It could be more pleasing, but I doubt it...." Wow -- did *SHE* really say that?
Can you please get a peak design sling already it's embarrassing.
If you can get your hands on the sigma 150-600 you'll be amazed how good it is for its prize
No I won't, since stabilization in video is important to me.
Wow that goldfish picture looks so awesome I thought it was fake... that better be in you instagram or else I'm unfollowing.
LOL & 7:52
Fuji comes with a new one,...XF150-600mm....could be interesting.
That's gonna be an awesome (but expensive) lens :-)
Also can you explain this to megrim physics point of view? So you set up for 240fps or 1/240. The you set up your shutter speed to 1/2000. So that means you have frame lasting 0.0005 seconds. Within each frame it takes a shot lasting 0.00005 seconds. So the image capture for single frame is massively shorter than the length of the frame itself?
(Thank you Kasey -- not even 2 minutes in) "First impression of the size. I can't believe this thing. It-it's heavy, it's noticeably heavy." That's what *SHE* said.... *NEVER*
This channel gets more views than Vegetable Police.
Those things look like anti-air equipment lmao, meanwhile I carry my Olympus 100-400 on my pocket everyday
Microcontrast of FF gets you.
Make the same video about Fuji 150-600 and Sony 200-600 please
