    Impressive! Dagon is one of my favorite lovecraftian characters: As a coastal dweller, I fancy Him more.
    Your puppet is not only made of silicone, but of knowledge, patience, effort and love for what you’re doing, and those are the finest materials to work with. Congratulations.

    • @TheLoneAnimator
      @TheLoneAnimator  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks! I think Dagon is the ultimate Lovecraft story. So much of what he (and others) wrote later comes out of this single story. I actually didn't use any silicone for this puppet; I rarely do. It's all good old liquid latex :)

      @@TheLoneAnimator it's me again ,and I would like to ask if gedeo latex can be used aswell for the skin and how could I paint it?

    • @TheLoneAnimator
      @TheLoneAnimator  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@stefanosmarkopoulos Gedeo latex is more creamy than the milky latex I prefer to use, but apart from that, it has the same qualities when it has dried. To get a paint for your puppet that won't crack, add tinting medium to a small batch of latex, and then use a sponge to lightly sponge on the tinted latex onto the puppet. What I usually do is I sponge on the tinted latex, then use a second foam sponge to go over the painted surface by dabbing it, thus absorbing excess latex, so you won't cover too much of the details on your puppet. You can work over your puppet this way by lightly drybrushing on several thin layers of color to achieve all sorts of effects. I start with a dark base color and then softly drybrush on lighter hues, thus revealing the highlights on the puppet in a very attractive way. Look up TH-cam videos on drybrushing techniques for painting models and such. Over that, you can add details using acrylic colors. I prefer acrylic airbrush colors, which I sometimes apply with an ordinary brush.

    • @TheLoneAnimator
      @TheLoneAnimator  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm afraid I don't have a particular brand to recommend. Latex is pretty much the same all over the world but sold under dozens of brand names. Just look for mask-making latex, which is supposed to be thinner than mold-making latex. I have used both, and if the mold-making latex is thin enough you can use it for making puppet skins. What you want is the consistency of milk, not cream. Monster Makers has a latex which comes highly recommended for making masks, but I've found it a bit too leathery for the purpose of making puppet skins. I've found good latex at hobby shops and makeup suppliers.

    I have a question about the head and torso sculpture creation, as I am attempting this process myself. How much of the back of the head and the neck should be sculpted? I've made a mold of a critter with a longer neck than the dagon fish monster here, and it's difficult to apply latex into the head due to the neck cavity of the mold being so small.

    • @TheLoneAnimator
      @TheLoneAnimator  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If I'm sculpting something with its ears where a human has ears, I'd end the sculpture just behind the ears, and then draw a line down over the shoulders and the torso from that point on the head. When I have made puppets with longer necks, I've actually sculpted and cast the head separately, and built up the neck using bits of foam padding (sometimes very thin foam soaked in latex) and castings from skin texture molds.

    Doing 3D models for CGI is kinda like doing stop motion puppet,
    Like doing the clay molds is akin to the process known as Retopology, only real difference been the fact in CGI, the details are added in afterwards but, that’s mostly how I do things in Blender 3D, awesome job as always dude, your a great inspiration to us all as film makers and animators alike.

I buy my latex from a make-up guy in Sweden, but you can find it all over the internet and in many hobby shops. I don't have a particular brand I recommend. Just look for mask-making latex, and you'll most likely get something that's equal to any other such product. They're mostly the same in quality.

    • @TheLoneAnimator
      @TheLoneAnimator  ปีที่แล้ว

      If I were to make a Talos puppet, I'd do it pretty much like this puppet.Some sections like the head and the front of the torso would be sculpted in clay and then cast as latex pieces. Other bits like the back, the legs, and the arms I'd build up with bits of foam and cover them with patches of latex skin.

      @@TheLoneAnimator Thanks! I'll experiment with that. I also had someone tell me that i could mix sobo glue with white crayola magic and a bit of acrilic paint and sculpt with that over a wire armature with foam, and that it would dry flexible.

      @@TheLoneAnimator Hello! Sorry to bother again, but I found this cheap expanding foam called Polycraft 010 Soft Foam, and saw a youtuber use it, except that it was crumbly and didnt fill up the mold well. He put a couple of layers of latex in the mold first, then poured the foam in with the mold closed and left it to sit for hours, sort of working. I was wondering if you knew this material or could give me any tips as to how to fix the problems the youtuber encountered. Thanks so much for your help!

    • @TheLoneAnimator
      @TheLoneAnimator  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@legolasstudios it sounds like that TH-camr got it right the second try around. What you have to do is line the insides of your plaster mold with latex first and let that dry. two layers sound just right. Then you can pour in the expanding foam, BUT you need an escape vent somewhere in your mold, so the excess expanding foam can squeeze out. this is because of two things: If the foam can't escape, it might expand to the point where it bursts and shatters your plaster mold. Also, if the foam is allowed to expand to the maximum, it'll become softer than if crammed full in a closed-off mold. It might be a good idea the try different amounts of the Polycraft before you mix it, then mix it and see how much it expands before trying it out in a plaster mold. Then you'll have a better idea about how much you'll need to mix to fill out your mold. If you decide to try this, get a strap to hold together the parts of the plaster mold (assuming you at least have two parts). If you don't, the expanding foam will press apart the mold parts very quickly, and your casting will be ruined.

    • @TheLoneAnimator
      @TheLoneAnimator  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I can tell you what I'm using. I animate with DragonFrame (which is expensive) and a Nikon DSLR camera but also with the Stop Motion Studio app (which is cheaper) and my iPhone. I use Premiere Elements when I edit, but there are lots of other good, easy-to-use software. You can pretty much see the puppet materials I use in this video and in some of my other how-to videos. None of those are very expensive, except for the dental plaster. Of course, you can also use clay to make your characters, which is a material you can re-use again and again. It all depends on how realistic your approach is. Also, be prepared to put in a lot of hours and work getting where you want to go with your project.
