  • MRI is the gold standard for diagnosing BSI, but does the presence of a BSI on imaging mean you can't run?
Bergman and colleagues studied this in their 2004 study.
21 collegiate runners were given MRIs following an 8-week training program.
Following the MRI, the team physician followed the subjects for clinical signs or symptoms of leg pain for the subject's four-year career.
    What did they find?
43% of the subjects had MRI findings consistent with a tibial BSI 🤯.
None of the subjects who continued the study developed a symptomatic tibial BSI.
Like many pathologies, imaging findings must match the clinical exam when determining the presence of an actual injury and the appropriate management.
And if you're running a lot, your bones might look slightly different on an MRI 😀!
