I'm sorry, I don't even begin to agree with the accolades I've seen on the forum about this reading of the aria. For a start, where's the recit..? Secondly, the tempo is ponderously slow making the singer sound as if she's wading through treacle. Thirdly and lamentably, we hardly hear the bassoon obligato, largely lost in transit as it were. As for the lady herself, a pleasant timbre but it's not stylishly correct to decorate in the 'A' section and in any case they're pretty pathetic at that (except for the final one in an otherwise disappointingly low rent da cappo). But above all she doesn't capture the pain and pathos of the piece. In short, in my view she was ill advised to embark on this particular venture and doesn't 'deliver'. Go to what in my opinion is the benchmark performance of this glorious aria. Watch as well as listen to an artiste who >inhabits< the character's heart-rending turmoil, viz Phillipe Jaraousski - but make sure its not the video recording accompanied by a still photo but rather the stunning, electric alternative where we see him with orchestra. The ginormous difference in interpretation by these two singers is akin to that between a lamb and a lion. Go compare for yourself.
She’s just perfection singing this aria...
Thank you so much for this post!
