This is one of my favourite video on your channel now. The visual, the story telling and the scenes you captured and snippets of the books you read cleverly put together which really engyaged me throughout the entire video.
Bro, your self control/discipline is very admirable. Taking on a challenge like this off your own accord and sticking to it really shows how powerful your mind and will are. This was a great video, not because it was well edited (which it was), or because it was extremely entertaining (which it was), It's the lessons that can learned from watching someone undertake something so challenging and doing it for the sake of the journey itself. Great video John, I hope others take away as much from this video as I did. 4.8/5 stars.
Sitting comfortably in a train, eating well, reading the whole time and recording the surrounding. What a challenge. Yes, his mind and will must be really so strong...
I took Amtrak from Ft Worth to Austin once, 6 hour ride. Spent most of my time in the observation car like you did and tried to study for a physics final, but it was so exciting watching the world go by that I couldn’t focus. Failed the final the next day. But this video makes me want to do it again. I read on the trains on my trip around the UK and that was amazing.
The house at 2:20 I would want to live in. I'd fix it up a bit and use solar power, though I see a wind turbine on top of the hill. I'd stock pile in the winter, and keep freeze dried foods on hand. The book club sounds very interesting, and I like the idea of getting a nudge to read more.
Top five favorite videos of the year from a booktuber! Thank you for the idea for an adventure for myself hopefully one day in the future! Happy reading!
There's something so singular about the peace you feel when reading a book on a train with breathtaking views. I read babel on a train in an attempt to reach Barcelona from Seville and I felt that my worries were flushed away so quick.
My man John I appreciate how you have an idea and make it reality, you've always been a great source of inspiration to me. I go to the university you attended before you transferred to Harvard, and I'm headed off to my second year tomorrow; My dream is to create TH-cam videos and inspire people like you've done me. Thank you.
today picked up "1984 George Orwell" and inside.. was a note from John Fish.. with his autograph. Wow. Thanks for doing this.. it is those special touches that add customers for life.
John... this past summer I drove cross country several times, seeing about myself and a woman... I'm amazed you could read for so long with only an hour of slumber. Staying awake during travel is no joke- and sleep happens just how you described! Feeling good, feeling good, feeling... sleepy. Nice video!
I watched this video because it reminded me of my first video I published on my TH-cam channel! Train & literary talk! Thank you for the interesting video!
There was a waterfall near us, such a lovely thin streak of water, like a thread but white and moving. It fell from a great height, but it looked quite low, and it was half a mile away, though it did not seem fifty paces. I loved to listen to it at night, but it was then that I became so restless. Sometimes I went and climbed the mountain and stood there in the midst of the tall pines, all alone in the terrible silence, with our little village in the distance, and the sky so blue, and the sun so bright, and an old ruined castle on the mountain-side, far away. I used to watch the line where earth and sky met, and longed to go and seek there the key of all mysteries, thinking that I might find there a new life, perhaps some great city where life should be grander and richer--and then it struck me that life may be grand enough even in a prison.
after watching this video for 33 seconds i have to pause and sign "this youtuber is so similar to Sheldon!" This is such a heartwarming video and i would really love to experience something like this in the future
Thank you for sharing on your train adventure. I have not gotten into reading a book in a long time. I think I will read your favorite book from this trip to start out. I always enjoy your content. I am still young at heart, I sometimes forget to laugh and smile. Your videos help me remember to do that at least sometimes.
Hey John, this was a different type of YT video--that's for sure! Your reading style will inspire others to pick up a book and start reading no matter where they are at. It's all a matter of staying focused on your reading without your surroundings distracting you. The only shortcoming you had on the train ride was falling asleep for an hour and drooling on your sweater! We all have our vulnerabilities John.❤😊
I absolutely love these kinds of contents, John! Also, your hyperfocus always amazes me. I would have already spent a few good hours just staring outside and zoning out.
Night on the galactic railroad is another book that heavily features trains in its writing. It may be a children's novel, but it can get pretty philosophical, with themes such as life and death. I'd highly recommend it!
This was such a wholesome viewing experience, thank you!! I am amazed you could stay up AND reading for 34 hours straight! I enjoyed the sights and I also added Bullet Train to my list. 😁
2012 to 2018. I worked in Indiana , Kentucky and used amtrack. Remember spent a day then three days trip. Read Marconi The radio guy loved it. Didn’t notice but we have so much corn. Downey California. Ps. I surf San clamente Ron weekends I use amtrack train priceless. Catch some waves read a little. ❤
Read that “Last Train to Paradise” book last year after seeing it in the backdrop of a photo I took at a gift shop back in 2019! A really good book on trains is, “All Aboard! The Railroad in American Life” by George H Douglas. It inspired me to take the Amtrak for the first time right after haha
Loved this video John. Been having a tough time finding time to read but I got inspired to put more effort into that. Signed up to the Bookshelved club as well. Looking forward to that! Also not sure if this was an issue on my end but I felt the music was a tad too loud sometimes. Had to fix audio here and there while watching. Nevertheless, brilliant stuff. Waiting for more! :)
I loved the adventure you went on. I would totally do this. You did amazing reading as many books as you did so good for you. I’m excited for your company its genius because I was looking for a good book company so to sign up with now that i’ve completed my masters. 😄
I don’t know anyone else that can hop on a train, and get of having read 8 new books. Sitting down and focusing for that long is absolutely bonkers
Reading is easy lol I can do it too
This is so true! I get distracted after an hour at max.
Well not everyone is a prodigy Harvard graduate lol
It's not easy if you're someone that has ADHD@@erich9779
some people just don't have that attention span and there is nothing wrong with that
This is one of my favourite video on your channel now. The visual, the story telling and the scenes you captured and snippets of the books you read cleverly put together which really engyaged me throughout the entire video.
SAME!
You forgot to mention the music....
Love the idea of watching someone read a book for 36 hours and it can be entertaining

I doubt that I know a single person who can do what this guy did in the video. I certainly couldn’t

Your videos start off on such a peaceful note man❤️
Reading on any mode of transportation is a mood. I wish I could read a book under three hours though
Same
The fact you were on one of the trains that sounded it’s horn as it passed by in my college town makes this all the more magical ✨

Love John getting into narrative stuff like this. Also the fact all the books are train books 😭
I love your book related videos!

Every video of yours serves as a inspiration for me 😊.
Thanks for the special video. I‘m currently heading to LA, Started in Seattle 2 weeks ago haha. Trying to find my way through Infinte Jest.
In a way, this is an anti-challenge video. You took your time, the stakes were super low, and much of the video had no narration. I loved it.

@Gigaamped philosophy, stories, physical and mental health, calisthenics, and comedy
How can you read so fast. That’s unbelievable. I hope I can do that someday..
not only that but he comprehends everything
The landscapes made me love this side of America and the montage is genuinely great
love this whole idea of getting on the train and read through the whole journey. and the music and scenes are so beautiful!
What an awesome idea! Love the shots you made.
Edit: also, I can’t believe you stayed up so long while reading books!
John uploading on my birthday is a present I didn’t know I want but I am elated to receive!
from a tech youtuber to being cinematic and artful, super inspirational John
What a great idea, amazing video.
Such a great concept and really motivated me to read longer this weekend!

I just couldn't not think of Sheldon saying "I love trains" when the video started! 😂
This was terrific. If you’d stuck to fiction or narrative you might have stayed awake too

while watching this video, I was like: "there should be an app like Letterboxd but for books"... and sure enough, John delivered :)
You did good. You motivated us to read vs. watch mindless tv. Thank you. Books take us out of our comfort zone

The montage is brilliant, I enjoyed the video so much
Riding in Trains with Books! Shocked Train Dreams wasn’t in the line up! It’s short too!
