    For me, social media *used* to be fun when it was about connecting with friends and family and easily communicating with people I care about. Then it turned to shit when it became more and more about incessant advertisements, promoting garbage no one cares about, and "influencer" culture where your follower count is more important than what you actually have to say. It's very cult-like, and I never cared for it.
    I'll spend my time and money on whatever the fuck I decide I want to, I don't need invasive marketing constantly shoved down my throat telling me what I should want when I'm just trying to use a social platform to connect with people I know. I deleted Facebook years ago, and I've been trying to minimize my social media usage since then. I also have literally zero remorse for using adblock at every single chance I get, salespeople ruin everything if it gets widespread and popular enough.

      I havent used facebook in over a decade. They got caught a very long time ago selling peoples wedding photos to advertising companies. A big stink was made about only for it to be revealed that the facebook TOS has some stuff in it making facebook the legal owner of any and all pictures uploaded to facebook. This is still the case and its so much worse now. They have been doing shady shit for over a decade and the average person has only started to catch on very recently.

      I'm workig in the web design industry for ~ 20 years now. I never understood the appeal of Facebook other than allowing "normal" people to easily post content online back in the day, where setting-up a blog required some knowledge of basic html etc. It was accessible, it was popular - but for me - the value wasn't there.
      Having a feed of posts, that's literally a dumpster of everything just boggles my mind. If i want news - I'll go to a news website. If I want memes - I'll go to a meme site. etc. The platform got cannibalized by advertising, business profiles trying to save money on a website ect.
      No king lives forever.

    When I was a kid there was this site called 'banana island', which was a copy of 'Myspace' where you could add pictures, texts and music to your 'island' instead of a page.
    After Myspace went on a rocket ship and everyone was using it, the 'cool' site turned to one called 'Lunarstorm'. That one somehow evolved/devolved into a DC++ piracy site later which got taken down. So, when nobody wanted to go back to 'Myspace', 'Facebook' came around in its proto-form. Everyone I knew had a facebook and everyone agreed it was a superior 'Myspace'.
    Later 'Twitter' became a thing, but it felt more like a addon to 'Facebook', whereas the girls all started flocking to 'Instagram'. Being a guy in adolescence it was damn impossible to not join 'Instagram' just to have a sneak peak about the gals, haha.
    After that, I sort of grew up and stopped following every single social media. Partially because I still have nightmares of my grandpa finding my 'Banana Island' and re-educating me, as he claims, to paint walls for an entire summer. Later it turned into a sort of familial social pressure; Mom: "Why don't you have granny and granpa on facebook? They want to see your stories too!".
    The awkwardness of zero anonymity sort of murdered the free-spirit of the old internet for me, so I simply stopped using any site that required my personal info to be viewed for all to see.

    It really freaks me out how before Facebook we were anonymous and then suddenly with Facebook we were all putting our real names there. Breaking every rule of "using the Internet safely" and I still don't get how we all fell for that. I feel stupid. I can't even delete the app from my phone, nor my profile from Facebook itself.. not only that but the pretence of perfection that social media is, gives me an inferiority complex and I'm tired of it. In the past 5 years or so, I've tried to completely phase out social media from my life.
    I notice when I do use twitter on occasion, a lot of the time I leave feeling miserable, ugly, and bad at what I love to do (art) and unpopular and unloved as a direct result of me not having "likes". Facebook is known overseas as the website that only has old people left, but here in the Philippines 90% of the younger generation is mostly active in facebook than instagram or twitter. It's because facebook has almost everything you want on other social websites in one, esp 10 years ago. It has SNS, news, games, etc. And now, people still uses it on a daily basis because they grew up with it and a lot of their friends are also still using it so it's hard to totally convert to another platform.

    The thing with Instagram is that nowadays you can't even grow there unless you're spam posting reels. It barely shows you what the people you follow are posting, you get 5 adds after seeing two or three posts, it doesn't promote your posts unless it's reels and the list goes on. Everyone who's a creator there knows that the engagement has dropped down tremendously after they made these new shitty updates to try to copy tiktok, like you can legit think that most of the people who you followed are inactive because the shitty app won't show you their posts lmao

  • @namelessrv8771
    @namelessrv8771 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    The thing with Instagram it's that the platform is heavily against the users altogether. Content creators are barely getting by in the algorithm and with each update it gets harder and harder to get any likes whatsoever. Only way to actually get an audience to interact with your account is through reels, something that the algorithm has done on purpose. And people hate that. No wonder.

One was like 90 days because so many came through at once it was actually absurd, I'm not someone who posts hateful things or conspiracies or politics, most of my posts are about cats lol. Instagram was the new fb where you can see your friends photos and what they are up to just by photo. Fb was where you get photos but mostly just a place to place your thoughts. The internet is equally amazing and awful and has just as much capacity to enrich us as it does to hollow us out. Someone who's life is being part of a farming community in the middle of Africa might live the most enriching life or engage in the human experience in ways we could only hope to in the West. I don't think a majority of people know/care about crypto currencies so much because that change doesn't even affect the user experience in the platform, and it was literally mentioned that Facebook basically has Market saturation meaning there's nothing to market to if everyone already knows what the service/product is. Marketing something doesn't mean people will go to your platform/product. It just wants eyes as a potential option for the consumer

It does have a ton of my and my wife's relatives and a couple old friends but I'm not that "social" anyways and I really dispise reading people's dear diary entries. The fact I could log on right now and likely see over 34 posts from one of my sisters she's posted in the last 2 days (when she's not in facebook jail) is annoying. I'm also notoriously over-opinionated so things like my twitter or insta or reddit do not have anyone I actually "know" added and no one knows my names there lol So uncensored and unfiltered is a factor too.
