First chair French Horn player. We played this my senior year at State. Worked on it for months. Had to learn to double tongue. This brought back amazing memories!
Playing and experiencing the joy and love of this musical selection is a great privilege indeed, from my high school days playing the E flat and B flat Clarinet.
As a composer I would be extremely angered, as would Joseph Jenkins [the composer of this fine work], if my name had been omitted from the upload in question. FHornProdigy could exercise some protocol here.
Literally all of the horns in my schools wind ensamble is falling head over heals for this song. And I'm a contrabass clarinet player. I feel for all of the low clarinets trying to play this piece.
lol! playing contrabass seems fun though! I'm in 8th grade band and I heard the highschool wind ensemble play this and it was ammmaazziinngg!!! it was literally spot on. the French horns were amazing... all of the instruments were amazing!!! agh!
Jenkins didn't write a gliss in the opening horn lick. The newly updated full score doesn't have it. Jenkins said that it became "what was done" but not what he wrote.
there is no gliss in the first measure but there is one at the end from g below the staff to a b above the staff (at least in the first and second parts
It became tradition. The new “urtext” edition has the second note with an accent, hoping to prevent the “Horn Rip”. But I suspect many directors still ask for the rip.
Boy.... It sure would be nice to know who is playing............? The woodwinds sound suppressed so I am assuming this is a Military Band..... Perhaps the Army Field Band, but I do not know.....
+TheDerpMan.exe My band played this a few years ago. We played this along with Russian Sailor's Dance and Italian in Algiers for competition. Unfortunately, my director forgot the scores and we ended up playing this in about 3.5 minutes
My band could never play this simply because horns have an important part and that a majority can't double tongue . Like 2 people can and I'm one of them. 😢
i mean are there woodwinds in this recording or seriously, the clarinet part at measure 12 is beautiful and it gets no chance to shine in this recording. i barely heard it at all.
The piece could have been so much better if he didnt put horns for the melady(cant spell for crap sorry) amd put something like trumpits the horns do sound good but you can tell the trumpits could make it sound much better 3:05
The french horns made the song what it is. If the trumpets had been on the melody it would've been so much brighter and wouldn't have the same feel. I play the trumpet part in this piece and there are some times when we share the melody with the horns but it would be a completely different song with trumpets on melody.
I understand i just meant that (not to insult french horn players) a great french hornist can play as fast and sound as good a a good sax/trumpit player

I learned double tonging on this piece. French Horn all the way!!!
This piece can either be dream or a nightmare for a horn player, but when it's good it's FANTASTIC!!!!!

Our High School Wind Ensemble this year was the first group in over 8 years at our school who could even attempt this piece. We freaking crushed it!

I played Fr Horn in High School and we played this at our winter concert. I LOVED IT
It's nice to hear a horn section getting it right!
Best recording of this I've ever heard.
It takes a very special horn section to play this song, i'm glad that one of those sections was in my band
AirMover49 my honor band is putting it together right now, I love this song
Horns rule.
I play saxophone and love it. It's my favorite instrument, but this song makes me wish I played French horn!
Great composition by Jenkins! Of course all Horn players love this! Spoken like a true horn player :)
it doesn't get any better than this !
Wow! This piece is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!! It is sooo professionally done!!! I LOVE the ending on the last chord!!!!!!!!
Once again, French Horn kills it
Lily B. in a good way or bad way lol
Nephalem certainly a great way if any way

"Better not shout, better not cry, better not pout I'm telling you why".... Horn phrase echoes that
I played this on both contra bass and bass clarinets
Beautifully played
Central Methodist University band is playing this piece this year for our band tour!
My band is playing this for one of our spring concert pieces. I'm going to b dying cause I'm a born

True, but the rip still sounds good
this is a wonderfully correct rendition, technically.
pretty good group whoever it is. I'm performing this with my symphonic band
Flutes for the win
Some information on the performers would be much appreciated.
sounds like it could be a theme for an action movie
@musiko83 Musicality includes filling in what is not seen on the page. The glissando simply makes it more exciting- it makes perfect sense musically.
Joseph Willcox JENKINS
American Overture for Horn with band accompaniment 😎
If the group doesn't have monster great horn section, this is, most definitely UIL grade 5 PML.
French Horns FTW!
Hi hudsonville third hour!

Im the only trombone in my school's wind ensemble that can play the part at 2:44

What group is this? Excellent, whoever they are!
I have been wondering myself for a long time, appears to be the mystery recording, the "ghost band".
To: FHornProdigy: What band is playing? Are you playing lead horn?
PLEASE RESPOND.
*horn
MHS

Jalen Rantschler I loved it

Of course not! Glissing is lazy and sloppy. If you can't make the slur, go play the drums or something.
What band recorded this?
