Okay guys, I'm going to clear this up once and for all. Captain Olimar grew and bonded with the Pikmin so that both they could both survive on such menacing world. Before he came, they remained underground to hide from the monsters, but thanks to his commanding and leadership, they learned how to fight and protect themselves. Both Olimar and the Pikmin were sad to part ways, but he gave them the skills they needed to survive. He was not being a jerk. He was inadvertently being their hero.

This is.. morbidly heartwarming. Pikmin is the only game that could make me have mixed feelings like this. I like the way the Pikmin/the singer describe Olimar as a mother that they love because he's the first one that pulled them out, but also describes the vicious and sad circle of life where they must work, multiply, and eventually die.
This game was my childhood and I have so many great memories from playing this game as a kid. When pikmin 3 was announced I couldn't help but cry tears of joy and when I got my copy of it, I played for hours on end. I hope there's a pikmin 4.
One word to describe this song: Loyalty. No matter if they might be eaten, in the end, they will always be there for you, and they don't will ask for us to love them because they are conscious of their fate, and that this fate will make us sad if they get very so fond of them. I think it does the opposite. I think it makes you aware of the Pikmin's conscious decision to Love and protect you, despite your apparent indifference/apathy. It's tear-jerking that unconditional Love like this isn't returned ten-fold or more. It makes the Pikmin all the more elusive, beautiful, peaceful, loving, and melancholic. i remember in english class i was supposed to write a concept for a tv show for kids once in a test and i decided to take pikmin and make a show outta that.

I know it's used as an ad for a video game, and the parts where it talks about getting eaten are kind of weird taken out of context, but this is a beautiful song. Pikmin was also a beautiful game, with a nice storyline, but mainly, it was fun and the graphics were and still are excellent (you have to remember that this game was first released like 8 years ago).

IMO, the "gruesomeness" of the song Ai no Uta is part of what makes it so beautiful. That no matter what they go through, no matter how many of their brethren perish or how hard the day, THEY NEVER GIVE UP. They go through Hell and High Water for those who would Lead them, Loyal to the Last. Yet through it all, selfless and courageous, Never ask for anything (we will not ask you to love us), They simply enough to live, work, multiply, and repeat. To be so pure, Delicate yet Powerful. as you can see in the begining of pikmin 1 there was only 1 of each pikmin in existence and olimar not only helped them to reproduce and saved them from their extinction, he also taught them how to survive and that stuff teaching them collective mentality ( AKA: teamwork) , as you can see in the good ending of pikmin 1 where they start hunting as a team, that means that olimar, while trying to save his life, he also saved a whole species of plant/creatures from extinction
the pikmin are in love with olimar and this song got me closer to the pikmin than I thought I would even though it is quite gruesome but its like the pikmin wrote it just for olimar and it touched my heart
when you think about it, Olimar helps the pikmin more then he hurts them. Before he came the pikmin were essentially extinct, because they were the food of every other creature on the planet. But by activating the onions, throwing them at enemies, Olimar has not only revived an extinct species, but he taught them how to fight. As seen in the best ending of pikmin, they fight off a big bulborb by themselves. So they won't be completely helpless. Just food for thought.
I imagine the Pikmin look at Olimar as a father-figure, given how he is always the first thing they see when they are plucked from the ground, and they are willing to do anything and everything for him.

It's like something universal among Nintendo games. It's hard to grasp that Mario & Luigi, Link, Captain Falcon, Samus, all the Pokemon, Marth, Ness, and so many other characters technically don't exist, and it's even kind of painful to think about. Nintendo is to gaming like Disney is to movies; they just have this sort of 'magic' in them, and no matter how "childish" some people claim they are, you just roll your eyes and enjoy the magic even more.
on the bright side, the log entry after you cause Pikmin extinction does show that Olimar hugely regrets being too poor a leader for his pikmin, and that he does care about them

I think olimar always thought of the pikmin like bees, that they were doing what he said because he was their "queen", but that they didn't really have any real thoughts or feelings about it or him really, so when he heard their "ai no uta" he was surprised that they feel and saddened by what they felt so he made namida de afuerta because he regretted never telling them that he loved or appreciated them.
In Pikmin 2, take 20 of each kind of Pikmin and walk around with them for a moment. They will start humming this song. Then try to survive through a dungeon without losing any Pikmin - and if you lose any of them, fight on and save the rest of the Pikmin instead of crying.

as you can see in the begining of pikmin 1 there was only 1 of each pikmin in existence and olimar not only helped them to reproduce and saved them from their extinction, he also taught them how to survive and that stuff teaching them collective mentality ( AKA: teamwork) , as you can see in the good ending of pikmin 1 where they start hunting as a team, that means that olimar, while trying to save his life, he also saved a whole species of plant/creatures from extinction

Forget the story line and think about what really matters. The gameplay. Which is AMAZING.
This song is a tiny bit morbid
when you think about it, Olimar helps the pikmin more then he hurts them. Before he came the pikmin were essentially extinct, because they were the food of every other creature on the planet.
But by activating the onions, throwing them at enemies, Olimar has not only revived an extinct species, but he taught them how to fight. As seen in the best ending of pikmin, they fight off a big bulborb by themselves. So they won't be completely helpless.
Just food for thought.

I imagine the Pikmin look at Olimar as a father-figure, given how he is always the first thing they see when they are plucked from the ground, and they are willing to do anything and everything for him.

It's like something universal among Nintendo games. It's hard to grasp that Mario & Luigi, Link, Captain Falcon, Samus, all the Pokemon, Marth, Ness, and so many other characters technically don't exist, and it's even kind of painful to think about. Nintendo is to gaming like Disney is to movies; they just have this sort of 'magic' in them, and no matter how "childish" some people claim they are, you just roll your eyes and enjoy the magic even more.

I think olimar always thought of the pikmin like bees, that they were doing what he said because he was their "queen", but that they didn't really have any real thoughts or feelings about it or him really, so when he heard their "ai no uta" he was surprised that they feel and saddened by what they felt so he made namida de afuerta because he regretted never telling them that he loved or appreciated them.
it's because of the sad thought of leaving those pikmin behind and the bond made between us and those brave little pikmin why we need a pikmin 3
