Lyrics:
Cold, so cold
The mountain air, thin and spare
The sun obscured
By endless winter
Winds rush through the valley pass
As snow falls upon icy paths
From pale white it fades to red
With the blood of my comrades
From the canyon floor
To the tundrous peaks
The cannons belch forth
Through the many weeks
Frozen, starving
In fields of ice
This barren trench
Altar of sacrifice
Holding position
In oceans of white
My hands go numb
From the frostbite
Man the machinegun
Against the next wave
Snowblind and shivering
Send them to the grave
Blood of these men
Spills on the land
Fruitless offensives
From frontline command
Perched on the watchtower
I see their advance
Through deep snow
Without a chance
Feeding the belt
Round after round
Another regiment
Savagely gunned down
The story of war
Blood and revenge
Just like the winter
Will never end
Blood
And the blood covers the snow
Blood
And the blood covers the snow
The forest, the mountains
The valleys of crosses
and the blood covers the snow.

I own nothing.
Last summer, I was hiking in the Julian Alps in Slovenia and listened to this album while climbing to the high peaks and wandering through the vast forests. Every now and then, I found WW1 graves and played tunes on my acoustic guitar to honor the memory of the soldiers
Thank you for your decency. Every single fallen man up there deserves our utmost respect
This song perfectly displays the feeling of pure desperation and the horror of senseless but inevitable eradication of life. Absolutely stunning and cutting to the core.
Pls contact me in some form you just described life.
One of the greatest songs I've ever listened
facts. this song is like an entire ep on itself.
Agreed.
This song almost made me cry. They successfully captured the desperate of fighting in a cold and isolated place, far from home, friends, family...
A 10/10, no doubts.
I live a few dozen kilometers from the place where this cover photo was taken. And, yes, life is strange: a beautiful album, a soldier perhaps resting in one of the many war cemeteries, my great-grandparents who experienced the horror of war. And here I am, writing this comment, moved 😢
What a great way to start an album that manage to capture the essence of the Italian front and of the war in general
Damn weebs
I’ve probably listened to this track around 20-30 times now and this is some of the most well written music I’ve ever listened to. Completely unparalleled in their writing in this genre besides maybe ThyLight. Fucking brutal at the end and that funky little jazz solo in the middle was a total breathe of fresh air. AND my favorite part of all, 16:00 when he opens up that Vickers gun to the blast beat. Amazing all around, come visit Ohio sometime.
@shyguy streams Pretty sure it's a speech by Wilhelm II. It's either him or Otto von Bismarck. They used to have a translation of it somewhere on this video.
@shyguy streams @Michael Mclurg
According to a comment from the full album by @blable bliblo the speech is from Karl I:
"The speech in the beginning was recorded on 16th Feb 1916, spoken by Karl Franz Joseph of Habsburg (then heir to the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, later known as Karl I.) for an organization that supports widows and orphans.
Text freely translated by me:
"I was at all fronts, with all troops of our glorious army. I saw all nationalities of the far monarchy heading fully united for a great goal, a glorious peace. In the eyes of all soldiers, pugnacity and confidence in victory could be seen. One heard expressions of the deep love towards our adored, highest lord of war and of the unlimited faith in god from the mouth of each of these heroes. Also admirable are the heroes of the back lands, the silent endurers, who, through the war, either lost their most beloved or live in constant fear and worry about their relatives. Worthy of this great era is the war aid, where everyone that is unable to defend the fatherland with sword in hand, strives to lessen the severe woes of our virtuous warriors through infinite benefaction." "
It's funny you say Thy Light, because I've just listened to this track in full for the first few times and it reminded me of Thy Light's In My Last Mourning and Bathory's Twilight of the Gods, especially the solo.
The atmosphere of this track is superb
CMV: If the whole album could match this track in its brilliance, this would not only be the best atmospheric BM album of all time but also one of the best best albums of the decade. this song is just a 11/10
Agreed. Although the album is an absolutely great album, this song is the greatest black metal song I've ever heard. And we're talking bands like Emperor, Dissection, Watain, Deathspell Omega, Leviathan/Xasthur, Silencer, Elffor whatever regular black/dsbm/melodic black, etc, this song is the king.
9:32 Oh my God, that bass line! Kickassss
oh man.... this subsequent quiet part and the solos are absolutely amazing .
One of the best guitar solos ever.
I agree it’s my favorite of all time
One of the few songs to make me tear up, and that's without reading the lyrics. So much emotion.
So atmospherically melodic! Amazing song, but the album as a whole is just great! Lest we forget the men who were swallowed up by the mountain, and lost in the snow.
Extreme Metal will never die
I love to comeback to this band, for obvious reasons. My neighbours from across the street loves them too.
Makes me cry every time ❤
7:17 super emotional riff. A lot of Anders Nystrom vibes!

Thanks for that
Gonna have to play some bf1 listening to this. Danke fürs hochladen! Mein Urgroßvater war an der Italienfront stationiert.
The term "epic" fits perfectly with this track. It transports me to another time and place, full of struggle, fight with the opponent and raw nature. I browse the internet through photos from the Italian front of the IWW. It's amazing how in these times people can create such a long, but sticky piece that is neither boring nor too long.
Do you feel that sound at the beginning? This is something I miss in many rock bands.
Oh yesss
T. Rex and The Stooges are both great examples. Amateurish and fuzzed out and full of real feeling.
im surprised with how the music turn out to be. Click for War Metal. End up staying listening to an atmospheric black metal. I can dig it.
I can't recomment this music enough. Such atmosphere, such feelings evoked. More than one year I know this song and I still get the goosebumbs. Amazing.
what an incredible guitar solo, what an incredible song. 100th time now for me...still getting better.
I apologize to the 4 downvoters that this wasn't a fake tanned covered chick with pink hair and long plastic fingernails who is singing about shopping and breakups.
And adultery
They were probably black metal elistists. Seen plenty of snobs trash on this album because it isn't brutal and doesn't sound like a broken washing machine with a dead mouse stuck inside it.
@@yash1140 ya exactly they were probably the opposite of what the original comment was suggesting 😂

I love Minenwerfer..

yep
it hasnt gotten any better.
I Fall in love with this masterpiece
from the 3:10 mark to the 4:26 mark i envision a plane rumbling down the runway. from there, i see that plane soaring off into the air.
I can almost feel the snowy storms, december in the alps, nothing but your comrades, a weapon and if you're lucky a tiny glimmer of hope, but flying one of the first airplanes, despite any conditions, cold wind blowing, loud motor and the rattling of parts, each time uncertain if you'll see anybody again, also very fitting
@@630171official well put
This is such a great song

Soll nochmal einer sagen, dass Gitarrensoli nicht zu Black Metal passen würden.... alles ab 11:01 ist einfach nur perfekt.
One of my all time favourite pieces of musi.CLASSIC
Amazing well written lyrics, a great style of post-metal and hard-metal, an actual masterpiece... How's that underrated?!
Why this isn't at Spotify ?
Because it is not good enough.
@@coronelsakura2841 No, it's too good for streaming shits like spotify.
CattisFatt no it’s really easy to post to sites like Spotify and Apple Music, I can only imagine it’s a personal band decision.
@@HockeyFan430 Minenwerfer has some songs on Spotify, just not from Alpenpasse. Hopefully this album will join them soon.
@@Mark-kr5go not exactly true. Other bands that posted collab albums on Spotify had to add the minenwerfer ones, meaning: when 1914 posted their album with Minenwerfer, one label was created for them and thats why you can see some of the songs there. But Minenwerfer doesn't want to be associated with Spotify as far as I know. Which is not uncommon for black metal bands.
i always thought u have to be scandinavian to make good black metal but this proved me wrong

jesus this track goes fucking hard
I just found out about this track and that's what the fuck I'm saying. I can't name a black metal song that goes harder than this. This song has the spirit of bands like Bathory, Burzum, Opeth, Thy Light and Leviathan, all wrapped in one.

Святой Анал... Какой ЩедеврЬ
Amazing, cant get enough of that
insane
(0:35 - 1:50) i thought i was listening Burzum xd
This is the song that I kinda listen with a bit of weird feeling 'cause the guys from this band might at first glance give off some kind of swastika vibes, but that’s anachronistic, their songs are about ww1, so I don't know still... but: again, fuck that solo and the ending; just beautiful and painfully eerie. Fucking masterpiece.
I feel the same about deathspell omega and le peste noir
@@ole86 Peste Noire (peste is feminine in French, so la peste noire hence the name of the band : Peste Noire)
@@MSAINT-bn4vj peste is a feminine noun, i know by now. but "hence the name of the band : Peste Noire" makes no sense since it would be the same regardless of the gender.
I just know that this solo is one the best and the bass lines, damn, I'm again here.
Stupid band name almost turned me off from getting here. But this is some premium atmospheric BM about one of the most chilling (no pun intended) chapters of modern day warfare... remains of those poor souls are recovered even today. And even more than a hundred years later, senseless slaughter is the way mankind keeps choosing.
@Reclusiarch Grimaldus ah, yes, that unequaled honour of sacrificing one's life for the whims and desires of some king, general or simple politician. That, of course, is what gives "meaning" to a life...
@@KomradeKrusher for kings and nobles it can be a good thing, most of them throughout history put their lives on the line right alongside their men. Politicians on the other hand are almost always scum.
