I was always looking at iceberg lettuce with terrified facial expression in the supermarket. Now, I am not afraid anymore of it! I will stop buying ''ready to eat'' salads and will prepare my own salad on this way that you just showed. Thank you!
you wash the lettuce after you cut it, when you only wash it before cutting you run the risk of not getting into the crevices where possible dirt or bugs are in
So many people are complaining about the salad not being washed. The video is titled "How to Cut Iceberg Lettuce for a Salad", not "How to Wash Lettuce". Washing lettuce is common sense and shouldn't need to be explained.
I found this very helpful because I did not know whether to very finely shred it or to leave it in bigger chunks. Delia Smith said on one of her programmes that she did not wash her iceberg lettuce because it did not need it and salad dressing did not mix well with washed lettuce.
if you don't wash it where I live you get a mouthful of sand. I wash it and use a lettuce spinner to dry it. I guess if they make a lettuce spinner it must mean you should wash lettuce. Also, think of the pesticides...
@@savvysilvia5075 I wonder if you mean romaine lettuce? That definitely needs thorough washing specially in crevices. Iceberg doesn’t require that though
@@TrezCast since my comment, there have been cases of food poisoning from lettuce. They said to was thoroughly as the stagnant water between the leaves can get salmonella. That's with any lettuce but the food poisoning happened with iceberg lettuce and baby spinach. I would try to wash everything now days. You don't know who's sneezed on it lol
Not if you are keeping the wedge shape! Iceberg tends to wrap tightly so bugs and dirt way down in the head of the lettuce is not common. If you chop it up and feel the need to wash, you certainly can. Its a nice perk about iceberg that other lettuce don't have!
Olivia Saez - That was the answer I was looking for. How come nobody 'knows' this? ... I don't wash it even for a regular salad, you want the leaves dry so the dressing will stick.. washing AND drying iceberg lettuce is an exercise in redundancy.

Once you master this technique it only takes a few minutes to have your lettuce ready
It's been so long that I'm not sure where I got it from, but I picked up not to cut, but to tear lettuce for a salad. Cutting is supposed to make lettuce "rust". IDK. I've been cutting it anyway it's a lot easier and faster.
I’ve always torn my lettuce for the same reason. The edges turn brown faster if touched by a knife! But, if I know it’s all going to be eaten that night, I’ll cut it. But if I’m only going to use 1/2 of it or store it up for later use, I tear.
I think you need to finish cutting it up before you say you're finished. Those pieces are too big. They need to be bite sized, unless you're putting salad knives at each place when you set the table. My silverware didn't come with salad knives so I serve salad already cut up.
That's because it's probably owned by your tight ass parents. If they threw shitty pieces of lettuce away instead of serving them, perhaps it would be a 5 star hotel. Also, if you are a doctor, why are you working in a restaurant? Furthermore, if you have been a chef for so many years, why are you needing to watch a video about how to cut up a lettuce?
For the wedge, obvious, but once it gets further down to size you still don’t get to that nice crunchy perfect size that restaurants serve. Is there a cross-cut that’s missing? Don’t want a 5 inch piece of lettuce.
I've just been tearing the lettuce into bite sized pieces. It takes a little longer but it doesn't take so incredibly long that I'm at risk of starving to death. I'm starting to think I'm doing it the wrong way and need to start using my knife to save time.
I came to youtubeland to see if there were actual techniques to washing iceberg lettuce. The videos I have watched are hilariously bad and I feel that my "method" is just FINE. (I was excited at first when I got to this one, because I was thinking, "Oh, hey - she is an actual 'chef'.." Turns out she doesn't even clean it. Just cuts off the "gross stuff". 😒
Back when I was growing up there was no such thing as buying pre-packaged lettuce for salads. Does anybody remember the advertisement about a mother teaching her daughter how to prepare the lettuce and would say you gently tear the lettuce.
The tip about crushing it before the final cut was the best thing in this video.

You won't believe how hard it was to find this.
No joke. I kept getting some very explicit videos about something else completely unrelated.
it was easy to me!
I litterally just typed in iceberg lettuce. First video that popped up

If only watching makes me shiver. I don't think I'm ready, to cut lettuce by my self.
Came for the culinary know-how, stayed for the bangs. That’s a win-win! Thanks!
This comment gave me cancer
The bangs were on point!
This helped a lot. I avoided buying salad and lettuce because I'm not sure what I shouldn't eat like that red part of the lettuce.

Iceberg lettuce = the BEST lettuce! 😋👍

does it need to be washed? Like each piece pulled open incase of dirt/bugs?

That's how rich folk cut their lettuce. We, poor folk, can't afford to waist 1/3 of the lettuce just because we saw a brown spot. :-D
I know right haha
I was thinking why she did that. I don't let any of the lettuce go to waste. That was a bunch of lettuce she got rid of.

She didn't even take out the core? She sliced it off but the lettuce near the core of iceberg is nasty, no?
I heard you shouldn’t cut the lettuce with a knife when some is left over. True or false? Anyone know?
Gorgeous Chef😍
What purpose do you have to push down a lettuce
Interesting method, but how do you wash this if it has dirt inside?
True
I hit my lettuce on the counter first and that breaks the core loose. Pull the core out and chop away.
Does cutting your iceberg lettuce with a metal knife turn the edges brown?
It browns faster but if you're serving it right away it doesn't matter
Iceberg Lettuce very delicious verygood

Cut with ceramic knife or simply tear with hands to avoid browning of the cut edges

First rinse it off. The bottom part you can push in with your hand and take out the core.

Tearing is actually better if you're not going to use it right away. Cutting with a knife makes the edges go brown.
