Thai elections: Can the country break free from the military-dominated government? | DW News

  • Thais are going to the polls to vote for the next prime minister. Many see this election as a chance to break free from yet another military-dominated government. Thailand's army chief has pledged not to stage a coup again. And opinion polls show the two biggest opposition candidates with a large lead over incumbent Prayut Chan-Ocha. But in the complex world of Thai politics, it would be too hasty to rule out a surprising and controversial outcome.

      ❤Thai Election is well known as not REAL Democracy.
      The system does not allow the TOP most favorite party who wins an election to run the government. Rather, this system has been underhand designed to keep control Thai cabinet under the specific military team in whatever real votes are.
      Office of the Election Commission of Thailand (OECT) allows lowest votes parties to win for a purpose of reducing the high number of Members of Parliament from the real winning party, those underhanded win members will be teamed with military anyway.

    Let me help you out with some facts your news story got wrong, and some simple research would have told you.
    1. Thaksin was overthrown in a military coup on 19 September 2006.
    2. That coup was reportedly led by General Prem Tinsulanonda and General Sonthi Boonyaratglin, but not General Prayut Chan-o-cha.
    3. Thaksin has since lived in self-imposed exile, except for a brief visit to Thailand in 2008, not 2014.
    4. His sister, Yingluck, won the 2011 election, becoming Thailand's first female prime minister.
    5. In May 2014, Yingluck was removed from power and later the Royal Thai Armed Forces launched a coup, led by General Prayut Chan-o-cha.
    It is widely accepted that Thakin was something of a puppet master for his sister and would be again for his daughter, if she were to win, but he was out of the country long before 2014.

    • @abmong
      @abmong ปีที่แล้ว

      Puppet or not, the Shinawatra won the popular vote. If the Bangkok Elites and military keep doing coups and denying the will of the people there will be chaos. No one wants to see what's happening in Myanmar happen in Thailand. Thais need to learn to conduct fair elections and accept results and not oust duly elected leaders mid term, that only breeds anger and resentment in voters who feel robbed. If a PM is corrupt, vote them out and/or start legal proceedings according to law. Otherwise the cycle of military coups will never end.

      And who gives political legitimacy to the Thai military? At the end of the day, it's a codependent power structure that maintains the status quo.
      The previous king was revered as a God. Why did he not incite a people's uprising despite the fact that the Militarists also killed his pro-liberal brother, Anandamahidol?

    • @abmong
      @abmong ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@prfwrx2497 Don't be too quick to blame the Royal institution. Without the Royal institution, Coup Generals would just make themselves President, that would make a Coup General even harder to depose. Do you really want the likes of Gen. Prayut as President and Gen. Prawit as Prime Minister like the system Putin has in Russia? Because that's what could happen without a Royal House.
      It has always been a difficult three way balancing act ever since the 1932 Siamese revoltion. Back then the Military almost abolished the Royal institution, but didn't because they feared a popular uprising if they did. Plus there was the communist threat.
      The Monarchy has since filled the role as referee/fulcrum between the Military and the Civilian government. The late King Bhumibol successfully got Coup Generals to stepdown on many occations and return the country to Civilian government. If you get rid of the Royal House then the Military will listen to no one. Unfortunately Thailand has a long running problem with politically ambitious Generals, Royal influence is the only thing that keeps the Generals from crown themselves King/President.

      It has basically become a norm for media outlets in Thailand to ask every newly appointed military chief this kind of question. This is outrageous for people living in the country with 13 successful coups. They didn’t learn any lesson which is unfortunate.

    Think we need to ask why the military was in power. People forget the reason why the army had to take power; I am not in favor of any army running a country. But also, I am not in favor of the rich running Thailand, when they are lining their & families pockets of the hard-working people of Thailand.
    People forget that military got Thailand and her people through COVID, floods, help get Thailand's tourism back and did it a lot better than most Westen countries.

      The most important thing is freedom of speech, which currently does not exist. Any political movement that brings on that change is a valid first step and there are absolutely no reasons to keep the military criminals, including the monarchy, in government.
      The day when you wake up and you can yell your frustrations at that German prostitute loving inbred freak without fearing imprisonment and violence against yourself, is the day when you are free and hope for the future is restored.
      Take it from someone who comes from the eastern bloc - we had to sacrifice countless lives to become free. We know history, we know what it takes to be free and we wish for you to get rid of your blindfold. Moving Forward is the only viable party.
