Lost some buddies here, and it’s hard to watch and comment. I have to say, no matter the conflict, no matter the time, no matter the loss, a Canadian soldier will see it through. In war or disaster, I am most proud to have served with men like this. No bravado, just actions and will. With compassion for their fallen comrades and civilians. I met Afghans who truly liked Canadians because we we’re just acting like we do. I was dropping off desks we built to a girls school, so that may have been a factor. But it remains Canadian Forces fought a different war than others, and we gained respect. We can be proud of our time in Afghanistan.
This should be a mandatory watch for the generations to come. Thank you. Phenomenal work. And something that was unbeknownst to me as a 24 year old Canadian. God bless these people.
Ex medic here, CWO Bobby Girouard and his brother Peter were my neighbours and friends when we were school aged kids. The last time I saw Bobby was in August 1999 in Bosnia as he was rotating out and I was rotating in with the 1e R22eR. We had only a brief moment to catch up. I have never served with him but from what I know of him, he must have been an incredible soldier. He always seemed to me like an ambitious and highly motivated guy. His passing was no doubt a great loss to family, his regiment and to the Canadian armed forces. RIP Bobby.
This...shouldn't just be on TH-cam... this story should be on EVERY Canadian television station and in ALL schools. We have Remembrance Day but not a true day of understanding. Since schools are open...MANDATORY viewing from Grade 6 through Highschools!!!
Thank you for producing and sharing this excellent documentary. My brother, Tpr. Mark Wilson, RCD, deployed with TF 3-06. He was killed on October 7th, 2006, during the final phase of OP MEDUSA. Spent upwards of a year in Kandahar four years after his death. Needed to get to Zhari/Panjwai. Mission complete. We Remember, All of our Veterans, Past and Present, Each and Every Day. 🌺LEST WE FORGET 🌺 Respectfully, a proud Silver Cross family member. ⚔ AUDAX ET CELER ⚔
Thank you to those who were a part of this war and other wars. Thank you for your service. I will do all I can to remind and even teach others about all that you have done for our country. My family will remember always.
I was a part of several rotos with the tactical airlift between 2003 and 2007. I served for 20 years in the CAF and it's something I will always be proud of. The thing I am the most proud of, if even in a very distant way, is that for a time I was a part of something that included these incredible men and women in this documentary. And the countless more who were not shown here but are all Canadian heroes and patriots. May Canadians never forget your bravery and sacrifice.
Very well said. Thanks for your service. Lest we Forget....these brave people shd never be forgotten....|This shd be taught in High School, and not just skipped over.
So well done Martin, a testament to the Canadian soldier …. tenacious, courageous and fearless. To all of you who took part and survived Operation Medusa, I hope you live long and happy lives. You make me proud to be Canadian.
Congratulations, Sergeant Major Barnes and the other folks who pulled this together. Like SM Barnes' book, this documentary is exceptional. It is a proud, emotional and heartfelt telling of Canada's service in Afghanistan. I recommend it to anyone who cares about Canada and the people who serve in our military. It is eye-opening and will make you proud.
This is an amazing piece of work. Martin was able to have the soldiers from Op Medusa tell their story in their words in a way that captured my heart. The music, the real time film and the emotional words of Canadian heroes is a masterpiece. Well Done
I was with A-Coy 1 PPCLI TF-1-06. Our mission was done and 1 RCR took over. I watched this with a heavy heart. Thank you for creating this documentary. Our efforts and sacrifices need to live on.
Thank you to those who were there and to those who made the film. It is incredibly powerful and I was welling up even without knowing anyone. I feel so proud of our soldiers and families and wish there was more support for them at every level. The sun is setting at the moment and the sky is beautiful; perhaps it is my imagination but I feel those who died are in those colours smiling down. Blessings to you all.
A truly amazing accounting. You have helped tell this story in only a way that a fellow warrior, soldier and compassionate humanitarian could understand the fundamentals of a unit, the compassion, commitment and sacrifice of warriors and their families.
Thank you so much for creating this magnificent testament to the heroic men and women of the 1 RCR BG through Op Medusa. It captures perfectly the pride, professionalism, dedication, humanity and humility of these great Canadians. BZ!
An amazing documenrty Marty! So glad that you put in all the time required to record the tragic events that unfolded in Afghanistan. Life is never the same after an experience on the two way range. I hope that all veterans can come to terms with their experiences.
Thank you for this incredible tribute, recalling the valour of not only the members of Charles Company and the 1 RCR BG but of Canada’s sons and daughters. Knowing these men personally and having grieved for their losses, I am eternally grateful. Help me oh God, when death is near. To mock the haggard face of fear. That when I fall, if fall I must. My soul will triumph in the dust. I miss you my friend and I was honoured to serve with your son. Pro Patria. ~Mike
I was lead driver of the g wagon in the multi km long ambush at the beginning of the video. My g wagon took 2 RPG hits that night but they both failed to detonate. My platoon also took the masum ghar objective on the night of Aug 19 and we were involved in a battle that lasted through until morning. I served with A company 2PPCLI and we were the red headed step children of that tour and often aren’t cited with any recognition because we were in an RCR battlegroup. This video brings back strong memories (good and bad). Thank you for posting.
Great courage and persistence by this Canadian battle group led by well trained and professional leadership. I am always impressed by the precise language the Canadian soldiers use in contrast to the slang phrases and imprecise language used frequently used by the neighbours to the south. So proud of our Candadian forces!!
An outstanding telling of a significant marker in the History of The Royal Canadian Regiment, and the many supporting units in what became part of our Regimental History.
Such an amazing documentary. I served with so many people named here and it brought back a lot of memories. I did not deploy to Afghanistan myself but I quite often think of those lost in that terrible conflict. Stormy was a great guy who would give you the shirt off of his back.
As an American soldier and contractor (Helmand Afghanistan 2008-2010)I saw first hand our allies like the Canadians and Brits did not get the credit they deserve. They often do more with less and their bravery was unmatched
Excellent work, although it brings back some painful memories and experiences I appreciate the effort put into making this documentary. Did not realize a pic of me was in it until my wife pointed it out. Again, great work. Charles Coy, 9PL, 3 Section PRO PATRIA 🇨🇦

Very poignant tribute some fine Canadian soldiers that are missed by their families and brothers in arms. A professionally made video that tells the story of this proud but sad part of our military history. Well done!
PRO PATRIA I knew Capt. Fawcett when he was in short pants and just a sergeant in the Camerons. MWO Robinson was just Cpl Robinson when I knew him. He is one of my earliest memories of being posted to Charles Company. Thanks, Robbie. Sgt. Tedford, WO MacNeil. I remember you every day. You were my friends. We were soldiers once.. And young.
“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: / Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. / At the going down of the sun and in the morning / We will remember them.”
Unconstrained by the laws of war is the key quote. NATO and the US fought with both arms tied behind their back. They fought according to the laws of war and the Taliban didnt. Between that and the corruption in the Afghan government and police forces, and the tribal ways of the population, it was an unwinnable situation from the start.
No disrespect at all. This documentary tells the story of Charles Company combat team from the 1 RCR battle Group. As Trooper Wilson was not a member of, or attached to Charles Company, his story was outside the scope of this documentary.
