  • The exercise company Peloton sells a stationary bike for $1,995. It’s recently exploded in popularity, surpassing even the spin giant SoulCycle in customers, data from last year suggests. Equipped with a wifi-enabled touch-screen, the bike allows you to join high-intensity spin classes remotely and, according to the company, get a studio-grade workout from anywhere.
    Over the course of two weeks, Producer Benji Jones put it to the test, taking a 45-minute class every day. And to measure his progress, he did a before and after fitness assessment - which revealed some pretty surprising results.

    I've done 6 months of 30-minutes Pelaton rides. AFter every other ride, I did 20 minutes of strength training. Slight change of the diet to eliminate sugar and most carbs. Tremendous results. Everyone is different, but for me, my issue was sticking to a routine and actually putting in the work. The Pelaton created the addictive habit and everything else followed. Highly recommend if you simply do the strength training after.

    Correct training requires taking rest days between training sessions. This follows the general principle that exercise stresses the body, so makes you temporarily weaker, and you get stronger during recovery, i.e., when you rest. You incorrectly did the same workout every day, and therefore got the resulting fatigue and start of injury.

      How many days rest in between cycling sessions do you recommend? Thanks!

    • @ilanpi
      @ilanpi 5 ปีที่แล้ว +95

      @@tsandphotog It depends on the length and intensity of your workouts, age and fitness level. Generally speaking, short highly intense exercise should be done fully rested, so with one or two days rest. With increasing age, more rest is required. There is also "active recovery," the principle that you can recover faster if you do a very low intensity workout. If you're serious about achieving a specific goal, such as a race, then you need to consider long term training regimens such as microcycles and macrocycles. I recommend reading a book on the basic principles of exercise physiology.

      Peloton isn't for everyone. It's expensive, but if you use it and if you have family members that use the membership that's when it really starts to shine
      I got my bike+ 3 weeks ago and have been enjoying it a bunch. $40 a month for two members of the house is a great deal. The price of the bike itself isn't bad considering a proper road bike cost $1k+ plus maintenance and gear.

I have the bike and love it - I also don't take 45 min cycling classes every day - I do strength classes, yoga, and stretching, etc. You can make it a very balanced experience. I love the experience and the workouts and instructors are the best in the world I'm convinced. • @bruces12
      @bruces12 5 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      Monisola, because the seat will get in the way of your thighs if it's wider and if it's soft and cushy, it'll actually make it harder to gain any real benefit from spinning (your leg muscles need a firm surface for your butt to pedal efficiently) plus your back will be in agony after about 1/2 hour from lack of support.

    I’ve used the Peloton app with the equipment at my apartment gym! I’ve heard mixed reviews but there are a lot who use the app with cheaper bikes. There are also running, walking, yoga, outdoor, and strength training workouts that can be used to mix up the routine. This isn’t a very fair assessment of Peloton as a whole. I tend to do the power walk and running classes with strength training. At roughly 280 I find them tough but encouraging and Indo a class almost every day! I pick 1-2 days a week as rest day. Maintained a mostly healthy diet. In a week I lost 5 pounds. I’m not overly sore and have lots of energy to keep going!

    "It's taking the cycling world by storm."
    This is far from the truth. It may be taking the fitness industry by storm, but that's not the cycling world. People who are interested in spin classes generally are not cyclists - they are gym-goers; they are fitness people. The two tribes are largely separate.
    Cyclists have road bikes and smart trainers and Zwift and Trainer Road. Fitness people have spin bikes and exercise classes.

      @@luke_5187 Cycling has a different culture. We're very much into coffee, long socks, tan lines, tight clothing, and shaving body hair. We all have a sense of adventure that drives our workouts, rather than obsessing over our physique. It's a nice and welcoming community. People in gyms are often wearing headphones. People on bikes stop on the trail to help strangers who have a flat tire. We have a network of people all over the world willing to share their homes with us when we are on multi-day bike tours. These are just a few reasons why cycling culture is different from fitness/gym culture.

The Peloton enabled me to do a little every day so I went into the surgery in pretty good shape. After the surgery it really made a quick recovery possible. I am six months out and usually am in the top 10% of riders. Benji remarked about instructors as he was showing Jess King. I did her once and she was so new age spacey I never tried again. Completely disagree with you regarding the instructors. Peloton’s mission is based on the everyday person, trying to squeeze in whatever work out they can in their busy schedules. It’s meant for soccer moms and single dads, the instructors words not only push you to be your best self but sometimes validate your existence for taking that first step of health and well-being. No it’s not a therapy session, your comment on that is completely inaccurate. However, it is motivational and sometimes just what someone needs to go from “I can’t do this anymore” to “I got this, I am valid and I will do great things”. For many, the instructors are why people love Peloton. It’s not the equipment, it’s the support and confidence you gain by joining the Peloton family. If you didn’t grasp that, then you did this for all the wrong reasons.

    I bought a peloton little over a year ago to stay fit in the mountain bike off season.
    I was definitely skeptical that I’d even use it.
    I rode all winter religiously hour to hour and half of classes 4 days a week.
    I did have knee pain at first until I got fit dialed in.
    Then spring mud season was over trails opened and not only did my legs gain massive size gains my climbing ability was off the charts.
    My balance was a bit rusty but the strength heart and breathing endurance was worth every penny.
    I mean huge time difference’s and the ease of just pedaling made focus dialed in as well.
    I will also mention this riding was mixed with squats deadlifts and leg presses which was my normal yearly routine.
    Sure you could put I pad on stationary but it’s the peloton ecosystem that helps keep you interested

  • @kevinc9528
    @kevinc9528 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Well this is spot on (and obvious) to what I would have expected with ANY endurance sport. Cardio and Vo2 max improves at the sacrifice of muscle. That's why endurance athletes are lanky.
    Being an avid cyclist outdoors and on Zwift and having done my fair share of spin classes ... it all comes downs to whatever works for you. I find Zwift more engaging and much more competitive to a spin class but Peloton is a nice set up. Unless you are absolutely time crunched or a gym is way too far, I would say a spin class at your local gym would be a good alternative (not the boutique $$$ spin gyms). If you want true performance gains that translates to outdoor gains, Zwift or Trainer Road is the way to go. Zwift is the real disruptor.. so much that professional riders are using it and it's being integrated into pro races - giro d'italia for example. They are creating an e-sport and teams like Data Dimension have competitions to scout for the next upcoming star!

I concluded though that the bikes in the studio are different than those sold to use in the home. I don’t know if I’m right but I know 40 resistance at home is easy cruising at 40 resistance in the studio was like 55 at home.
    Also, I’d be curious to know how much better your results could have been if you had incorporated a few rest days. Many of the instructors often stress the need for rest days.

    You can get the best turbo trainer for $1400, put a decent bike on it and pay $15 bucks a month for Zwift . It's like riding outside. Resistance changes with terrain. You can draft, they have organized rides, races, and training plans. Spin bikes hurt me, when I stop pedaling, that feedback from the flywheel is painful, while on my turbo on my bike, I stop pedaling, it freewheels. I might add that you could get the same experience you get with peloton with a noncontrollable trainer for like $200. The value is just not there, but most people that buy into it can afford it. I guess if you only do spin classes, Peleton is the way to go. Their monthly fee also includes family members.

    I bought an exercise bike for $10 second hand. Set a tv and apple tv box up in front of it and within 20 minutes I burn 300 calories.
    Bike: $10
    Tv: already had
    Apple box thingy: borrowed
    Wifi and electricity: not much.
    No gym fees. No ridiculously expensive new toy that most likely will be a clothes hanger within 6 months.

      @@gfhufhu4 as an ex college athlete 14 miles of running is a lot of running for the average runner. Our long runs were anywhere from 14 to 18 miles at collegiate athletes in insane shape. But your point was right that 14 miles of biking is nothing. people don't realize how fast you actually go on a bike and the difference between the two. People need only look at the distance split of a triathlon to know the difference

As someone who struggled to stay motivated during workouts, Lit Bike has been a game-changer for me. The fusion of music and rhythm into the workout has made it more enjoyable and engaging, and I always find myself pushing my boundaries to match the beat. The on-screen scoring system is equally motivating, and I feel a sense of accomplishment with every beat matched.

    We got one for this past Christmas. My husband got his centennial t shirt 5 months in. Me?!!! I did 7 rides and a handful of yoga or strength classes. So chances are, half the people who bought it and are paying $38 per month are not using it. The other half however are now making their bodies stronger, healthier, and leaner.
