  • The last we checked it is up to homeowners as well as business owners to shovel their publicly accessed walkways when it snows. So how come it doesn't happen? When a business or government organization is closed for the day or holiday they get away with not complying to the rules that are in place (not just during business hours).
And what ever happened to shovelling your neighbours walk?!?! This was something I was taught as a child and that full grown adults seem to disregard these days.... who raised you?
Grace Brulotte is 23 years old and was born and raised in Fernie, British Columbia. She has a condition called Arthrogryposis, which causes stiff joints and muscle weakness, as well as severe Scoliosis of the spine (a 95 degree curvature). She is a full time power wheelchair user, and relies on support from caregivers to function in her daily life. Despite her severe disabilities, Grace founded and became the president of a nonprofit society at the age of 14. This society gives people with disabilities the opportunity to adaptive ski at their local ski hill. She also founded another nonprofit at age 22, The Gracie Lou Foundation, which focuses on increasing inclusion for those with disabilities in society. In 2017, Grace became the First Female Tandem Sit Skier to Heliski in Canada. She loves anything outdoors or anything that challenges her to adapt and overcome. Grace is known for her adventurous and tenacious spirit, as well as her infectious smile. As a reflection of this, she was given the nickname Gracie Lou Whatwontshedo, which she believes to be the spirit within everyone, that pushes them to go beyond their comfort zones and achieve anything they set their minds to. I know you probably don't want to hear it , I am a ARMY Veteran that has been in a wheelchair for over 45 years and there are a few things to consider. Pick your battles, meaning..if you don't have to be there or go there, then don't, choose another day, or plan ahead of a storm, rain, et cetera. Secondly, try and change your tires for the winter season and get away from balloon tires, way too much drag for self propelled chair. And thirdly, I discovered an electric powered attachment that just clamps onto the front of the chair. I bought mine from China through Ebay for $860.00. Called CNEBikes, with a 350watt motor it pulls me up any hill at 8mph and on the straights it goes 13mph, and I'm 250lb. I also made a trailer hitch and now pull a trailer with all my camping gear. This thing is so amazing, it changes everything. I live in New England and it pulls me in 4 or 5 inches of snow, no problem. P.S. I always plan around, (if possible) the weather, and it is true even here, no one shovels. I go in the road with a red flasher and a headlight. good luck out there...

No chance with a busy lifestyle to reschedule because of weather, especially the snow in a Canadian/Rocky Mountain winter.
I don't have an additional budget for any attachment (yet).
I own an insulated trailer that is for hauling equipment and is completely wheelchair friendly.
This video began in front of the museum and library. Two places that pay tax payer (my) dollars for proper snow removal. No excuses.

Frustrated just watching! I live in Cheyenne Wyoming with the snow troubles much like you all. Unfortunately I end up shut in when the weather is bad. That is unless someone can drop me at the door. So why is it, we are limited access because we are limited? It's not right but in this "me world" people wont even think about it unless it happens to them. Thank you both for bringing awareness!

Before I became reliant on a wheelchair for mobility, I was totally ignorant of the limitations on accessibility. Now I attempt to educate people to the difficulties that we face in the simplest of tasks. I find that now I have to adapt and overcome. My life now is not what it was two years ago. But it could be a whole lot worse!

I do however, have two good friends that are paras and I find your videos to be very insightful and thoughtful. I try to think about the struggles they go through that most people take for granted and am always in awe by their perseverance. I have watched several of your videos now, and sometimes I can see the fatigue and frustration. I just want to tell you that you are incredible, and I hope that you will continue to do all of the things you do, especially providing people with an insight into your challenges. You’re an inspiration, and I can only imagine that by sharing these with the world that you have helped many in similar situations gain confidence and motivation. So, thank you and keep up the amazing job you’re doing for yourself and others. 🥰

Indeed! I’ve had to complain to the landlord and town council many times regarding slow or inadequate snow clearing, and I don’t do it just for me even though I’m in a manual wheelchair and an outspoken accessibility activist (and former national board member for a youth organization for people with impaired mobility). I take the battle for others who may not be at all ambulatory like I am, elderly with walkers, people on crutches or what have you. It’s not just about me, it’s others as well who can’t get around in the snow for one reason or another. Even parents with prams struggle in the snow, same with people with shopping carts outside a shop 🤷‍♀️But it’s us in wheelchairs that get hit the hardest in a sense because many don’t have the option to just stand up and walk past an obstacle, and society can’t always expect us to have someone with us at all times, we can be independent beings like everyone else...

Wheelchairs are not suitable for snow. My neighbors are impressed when they see me out in the yard after it snows, with my shovel, clearing a path to the garage, where I keep the garden tractor I use to blow snow. Shoveling snow is a great workout. There's a lot of times I'll shovel most of it by hand.

Power wheelchairs any wheelchair sucks when there’s more than a few inches of snow.
Most able bodied people just don’t have a clue what a horrible time when it comes to the snow.
Damn just watching you struggle in the snow really upsets me and angers me, even as wheelchair user.
The wear on the electrical/motors from the snow and salt just destroys them.
One year I was booting along on the sidewalk ( snow and ice covered) when I hit a patch of ice and it set me into the snow bank, as hard as I tried to get out I was stuck. Thank goodness someone was kind enough and stopped their car got out and freed me.
This winter has been mild and little snow so it’s the best in years for getting around.

@@ProTipsForParas I certainly didn't mean to ask anything personal...just curious. I saw the blanket covering up her feet, but didn't seem them or footrests. To answer your question up above...people don't care about shoveling out their paths. If they knew of a friend or something, maybe things would be different. I'm sure you could leave a message at the city's Chamber of Commerce. Others who may be wheelchair bound would benefit to know things like this. I know in Nova Scotia, Canada, some home owners clean them out in front of their homes. It kills me though, some people, when they get older are going to need help or they are going to be wheelchair bound and would certainly appreciate it...but no one will be there for them.

I am wondering what would happen if wheel chair's had fat tire's in back and short ski runner's up front around the front wheel's. Kind of like a 4 inch or 3 1/2 inch ski that the front wheel's would pass through for indoor surface's. Yes I do have an able body except for the 2 Traumatic Brain Injuries I had.
