- The First Lady of the American Screen, Bette Davis, earned the 1979 Best Actress Emmy Award (Prime Time, Limited Series or Special) for her work opposite Gena Rowlands, the Queen of Independent Cinema, in the outstanding made-for-TV classic "Strangers: The Story of A Mother And Daughter". Rarely been seen since its May 1979 broadcast, it marks a vital point in the career of Hollywood's greatest actress as it is one of the high points of Miss Davis's "Silver Age", when she played rich parts in some of the most acclaimed television productions of the mid-1970s through the early 1980s. Three decades after its broadcast and two decades after Bette's passing, "Strangers" remains a superb and resonant human drama, deservedly comparable to Ingmar Bergman's "Autumn Sonata" and James L. Brooks's "Terms of Endearment". I hope that my fellow Bette fans will continue to cherish one of her last great performances and films.
Even a thousand years from now, no one will ever fill Bette’s shoes! The best that ever lived!
Bette is without question the best actress that ever lived.
Absolutely!
Agree
@@jancrouch6577 not agree... Gena is
Davis _never_ lost the goods. This proved it. In that last decade there were plenty of Carson appearances, interviews and feting and awards, but what the woman lived for was _work_. And when she lucked into a part written this well, cast with a co-star of equal discipline and gift, we were the lucky ones.
Epitome of excellence in acting as always delivered by the late great Bette Davis!
Bette Davis in her emmy winning role. when she says" How dare come back and make me care !"
I remember that scene against the door SO WELL. Powerful.
This is just wonderful - Bette Davis sets the bar so high, it takes a Gena Rowlands to keep up!
ABSOLUTELY
My mother loved Bette Davis. She made me love her since I was a little kid. My mothers name was Lucy like the character. She told me about
Strangers when it first aired. Describing that great scene when Gena tells Bette the truth. She loved it. Mom also took me to see Gena in
Woman Under The Influence as a kid. I'Il never forget it. I love Bette. I loved Gena. Mom passed away in 2013. But when I see Bette - especially in this movie - it's like being with her.
I recall watching this on TV back in '79... I loved it Never forgot it. Caught parts of it in a rerun here and there but never saw the whole thing in its entirety until now. It's even better than I recalled.. God Bless Bette Davis!
Enorme Bette Davis!!! Maravillosa!! Grandiosa!!
Great acting.
Davis never, ever shied away from a role most women in her generation would run from-from Of Human Bondage 1934 to this Emmy winning performance 45 years later
Wow -I believe this is one of her best/top performances than even some of her movies. She is able to display true conflicting human emotions. Many people on tv made for movies can not display such heart/felt emotions. What I mean to say you can tell of some of these people today that act on tv is trying hard to look real ....
priceless
This is so heart breaking but that's live. All of us know a story like ,maybe not exactly, but quite similar.
Great acting performance.
OMG, I can barely watch this, it's too much -- too good :)
What an amazing film.
good film good preformances
wow this is getting really heavy, amazing
Totally believable.
wow
This is depressing, like Night, Mother.
If this had been a Major Motion Picture Miss DAVIS would have hands down won Best Actress Oscar...............
Yes, she was wonderful.
William Davenport i could listen to Bette Davis read the phone book as they say, but you've got to be kidding!

Is it just the quality of the copy or is this one of the most darkly/poorly-lit films ever?
It's the print.
