In that moment she realized he also told this young woman the exact same thing that he told her.

This man is so disgusting taking advantage of this vulnerable, naive, foolish, controlled by her mother, lovestruck and a bit unstable young woman, he married her mother for money and cheated on her, he is evil and deserves everything he gets, I love Sarah Paulson, she is a very good actress and she did excellent work as Maggie Connor in this episode of Law & Order, I love her and she is the best.

Yes- she thought she was the only one- just to find out her was (likely) a womanizer who used the same words and behavior with all the “women” he slept with, including Maggie Connor- and a pedophile too. I doubt he only slept with Maggie and Christine- his impulse control was very poor.
So many amazing actors and actresses came from Law and Order, it's incredible.
Why was the defendant allowed to stay silent and NOT answer the question from the lawyer? I would expect the judge to hold him in contempt before the court in real life.
It's confusing, but this witness was not the defendant at this point in the story. Note that his stepdaughter was sitting with her attorney at the defendant's table. Note also that McCoy asked the judge to treat him as a hostile witness. If this was a defense witness, he would have already been a hostile witness, and McCoy's request would have made no sense at all. Therefore the witness was called by the prosecution.
McCoy did suspect Mr. Martel of being the true perpetrator, and he used this prosecution to "convince" Maggie to tell the truth. I don't know if this is legal in New York, but I'm sure the bar association would rather the ADA to not prosecute a witness to try to compel testimony (McCoy's boss, Schiff, said that if this failed, McCoy would probably be disbarred).

@@matthewforsyth284 McCoy charged her with murder, not aiding and abetting, not obstruction, not felony murder, not anything that said, "she was an accomplice to her mother's murder". That's a big difference. He charged her with a crime he didn't think she committed based on the evidence, primarily to obtain her cooperation in sending her lover to prison for murder.
May I point out that these shows are the product of a paid writer? It is fiction produced under time restraints. Expecting real world actions is antithetical to most created works. Characters only behave as their authors imagine they ought. Seems a futile question to me.

There are so many great actors and actresses who were on Law & Order. Sarah Paulson is one of them. This was four years before American Gothic - she was 20 at this time.

That's Magnus Hainsley & "Young Scientist", lol! This quarantine has thrown me into a fantasy/sci-fi rewatch mood, so I started with Buffy, Angel, firefly, & watched "Serenity" last night. Joss Whedon said that once he cast Sarah Paulson for the role as the Alliance scientist, he had to cut other scenes bc she was so good. (I've known that since this ep. of L&O aired!) And if anyone watched "Angel", her defense attorney is played by Richard Wexler, whom Whedon cast as a wealthy necromancer, Magnus Hainsley, in 5x2: "Just Rewards". 😍
