  • Twice has been attempting to break into the American music market for the last few years, after conquering Asia. But has their plans and implementation really been effective, and can we confidently say that TWICE have or have not broken into the US? (Which is seemingly a common debate across social media whenever TWICE's name is brought up - so i thought why not explore this0

      They are still breaking into the US, there are some non kpop and casual listeners for their songs, but not too many. I presume if they can garner half of what they are in Japan (or maybe even a quarter) and do it in US, then we can safely say they had broken into the US market.

      I myself do have MANY opinions about Twices' "influence" in America. I've been a fan of theirs since late 2019!
      When I first saw them in their I.S.A.C., it was the costumes that the girls wore that day 🤭. And my only and DEEPEST REGRET! Is that I. . . I've missed out three of their concerts!
      Two of them were in Texas! The first one was in Chicago, July 2019!
      Even though I "have gone" to their concerts? But from those "ONCE's" that were able to go to those concerts locations! I call it "cell phone" scraps.
      And will continue to see them, in that method until "I'm able" to see them in IRL. I do hope 🙏 it comes true, for me one day, before I die 🙏🙏.
      I would like to visit their California store? Where I'm positive that it's had many visitors! Have you heard anything about it?

    One major hurdle of pushing the Hallyu wave into the US market is that JYPe's machine churns out constant material. Twice has a packed schedule where they are constantly practicing, filming, creating, and promoting. Because of that, their entire yearly schedules are planned in the beginning of the year. More time promoting is less time rehearsing, less time recording, and less time filming. While the majority of kpop groups will have one yearly mini album release, Twice has been dropping 2-3 mini albums yearly. Each of those albums means time for production, time for rehearsal, and short bursts of promotion. Promoting in Korea is much easier due to having all their other facilities within reach. They can promote, and then still go practice, train, record, all within the same day.
    The other major hurdle is the Korean public at large. Twice is the nation's girl group and as such are the pride of Korea. The Korean public is ok with Twice having concerts all around the globe, however when it comes to promotion, the Korean fandom want to see them. Traditional album promotion only spans 2-3 weeks as they have packed schedules. Due to Twice's big push in the US, Ready To Be's promotion time was used doing mostly US interviews and performances. Promoting in the US meant that Twice missed out on Korean music show performances as well as interviews and guest appearances on shows and this irked the public thinking that they're losing their idols to the Western market. The Korean market has to learn to share but it's difficult to do so when they're so accustomed to having all of Twice for the majority of their career.

    I get why have less promotions here than in Korea. They pretty much started there. They made their debut there. Yes, they sold out So-Fi stadium but people shouldn't forget where the band came from with exception of Mina who was actually born in Texas, they're a K-pop band, meaning the band is pretty much from a different culture. I love twice too. Do I wish they would get promotions here? Of course. I mean, the reason why they were so big here in March was mainly to promote the ready to be album which was the start of the RTB tour.
    To be honest, it's probably not easy because the band has to try to balance between here and Korea. Regardless, their fanbase keeps growing and growing.
    I'm not sure what people are expecting in terms of promotions, what more can they actually do? To be honest, when Jihyo was promoting her solo album, you know there was billboard sign of her in Chicago? Sounds like a promotion to me. Personally, I just let the band promote however they want because they do a lot of work more than we actually realize. I mean, the fact their fanmeet was able to streamed in the states through beyond live is a + for me... though the time difference was so different. Lol. It was 7PM there but 5AM here. Lmao.
    And it's not like their promotions are exclusive to Korea. They literally just made a post about Jeongyeon's song plus it's her Birthday! It's called TH-cam.... and it's not like their promotions are in Korean, they're in English. So... yeah. Plus, it's easier to promote on a platform that reaches worldwide such as Instagram, TH-cam pretty much social media.
    If anything, I think K-pop broke into tbe US I remember people talking about BTS in 2016.

    great video! it basically sums up my feelings about this topic too. I personally think one of the main issues with promoting twice in the US is that div 3 always plans their yearly schedules tightly, which is why it has always been very difficult to include the girls in any "impromptu" promotion, or not long before planned promo - which happens relatively often in America. That does take away opportunities, simply because there are a bunch of things that just don't fit into their schedules. But we have seen a lot of changes on that ground this year, mainly because they have made great use of their time in the US for the tour - with chae's remix and jihyo's work in talkin about it , for example - so the future does look very bring imo

    When they have solo or sub units debut they should go to US to promote as well, because Twice is a big group, it will be easier for the US audience to remember them through sub unit or solo.

  • @gigglehertz

    The thing hurting them the most in the US is lack of English speaking ability. All those performances on Fallon and Colbert etc are nice but the audience doesn't get a chance to connect with the group and learn enough about the girls individually to give them a reason to care about them.
    When they are interviewed most of them sit silently and only one or 2 say anything in broken English or through a translator. Most American shows don't want to wait with dead air while ideas are being translated both ways. Plus the hosts don't know enough about them (or care) to ask them individual questions. I feel like they will always be at a disadvantage to groups like Blackpink and most of the 4th gen girl groups.
    I have thought a LOT about this topic and I believe America would embrace them if introduced to them properly. I would say releasing a compilation album of English releases (or English re-recordinhs) could be a massive hit, though not sure enough people buy physical media now or just stream everything. Of course they would have to promote it and we're back to the language barrier.

      @Jaytzuu  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Yea I’m with you 100% on this idea and for some reason it’s not actually something I touched on in the video for what ever reason
      I do wonder how they could properly overcome this problem. I think if they’re to go on shows they need more than just interviews or performances, and maybe some type of game like how James cordon used to do
      The only problem from that is that literally all the daytime and late night shows are shutting down
      I think the only other effective thing they could do, is possibly feed into media more, appearing on magazines and such much more. There definitely is a lack of connection

    TWICE is the best selling korean girlgroup in U.S. (pure sales) the first korean girlgroup to sell 1 million albums in U.S., their U.S. tour was a sold out hit, and their billboard album charts numbers are great, that being said, i feel like since they started to promote so much in U.S. their korean popularity fell off, and they don't do proper promotions in Korea anymore, which is sad. People nowdays are easily forgetting the Wonder Girls case, because not only JYP is repeating the same mistakes but other companies like HYBE as well...

    The fact that only 1 maybe 2 members speaks English well hurts Twice a lot in gaining popularity.
    I know people will bring up BTS and how almost none of their members speak English well but I also think BTS's popularity in the US has peaked.

    • @Jaytzuu
      @Jaytzuu  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agree with everything here. Makes it so much harder for people to connect
      And it makes it harder for conversations to flow between celebs and twice which is important too.
      The difference with TWICE and BTS is that BTS still has at least 1 completely fluent member. Plus BTS is just a statistical anomaly anyway 🤣
      I wonder if TWICE will be able to work around it

    Radio wise, no. Not over BTS, Blackpink, Fifty Fifty & (G)I-DLE. No radio hits songs yet for Twice. (The Feels only spend 1 week in the Pop Top40). (G)I-DLE have gotten more radio play on the USA mainstream Pop Top40 with "I Do" & NXDE. Loona "Star" has done better than any Twice song yet.

    • @Jaytzuu
      @Jaytzuu  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Much agreed which is why I tried to focus on republic records lack of sending out to stations,
      They even once made a tweet asking Onces to request rather than just letting radios know where to send royalties. Hoping for that radio hit one day

    • @eejeej6363
      @eejeej6363 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @Jaytzuu I also think JYP Entertainment or their USA record label "Republic Records" are horrible when it comes to radio. ITZY " Sneakers" song has a English version & it too was not pushed to Mainstream Pop Top40 radio. Set Me Free & "Moonlight Sunrise" never had a USA add date for Pop radio in the USA. I been looking AllAcces, Mediabase charts for years. If (G)I-DLE ""Nxde" (that is like almost 100% in Korean) can get radio play, then these songs should have too if their record label was any good.
