Express Steam Locomotives of BR

  • The nationalised British Railways inhereted a substantial stock of steam locomotives from it's consistent companies. However, it was still necessary to replace many worn-out and obsolete machines before the change over to diesel's could take place. To this end a range of standard locomotives were produced and the first of the BR standards number 70000 Britnania appeared in 1951.
    Members of this class were used on the famous named express trains of their day, including the "Golden Arrow" of the Southern region. The ultimate express passenger locomotive design in Great Britain was the solitary BR Class 8P 4-6-2 no 71000 Duke of Gloucester. Both 70000 & 71000 survive today and are featured in this programme.
    Alongside these two engines is a large amount of archive footage of the standard's at work in the 1950's and 1960's. Other British Railways classes appeared on express trains although not strictly express engines, especially the last steam locomotive of all. BR 9F 2-10-0 no 92220 Evening Star, which although was a freight engine was famous for working trains such as the "Pines Express" and in preservation outings to Scarborough.

    My mum's grandad Maurice George Vaughan drove the Cornish Riviera and wrote a "The Locomotive Engineman's And Fireman's Examination Guide" book.

    Used to have this on VHS! Though I’m more into Diesels and Electrics (always have been), I enjoyed this programme, especially the archive footage at the beginning!

    It very rare to see Britannia working with one cylinder only

      That only happened because of the hotbox it had so needed to remove the offending bearing. Rather that than what we had happen to 7325 4 years later on a trip to Swansea in 1995.

      70000 was double heading with 7325 on a railtour to Swansea & the mogul ran a hot axlebox on it's tender, but this one was much more serious than that which 70000 is shown to have in the video. The affected axlebox on 7325 began squealing after Cardiff and despite emergency lubrication being added at Port Talbot it didnt work & on arrival in Swansea flames were coming from the center tender axlebox. They had to move it extremely slowly to Landore MPD as it was so badly damaged.

    And 75069 is already back since 2019 and this loco is no longer mainline certified

      Most likely the only standard 4 4-6-0 we'll see on the mainline again will be NYMR based 75029.

      That will never happen sadly, only at heritage railways. The Jacobite is the closest we'll get to daily mainline steam services now unless similar trains start running on other routes like the S&C, Cumbrian Coast or down other branch lines. However I doubt this will happen apart from the normal railtours.

      @@MasterMoyle Steam wil not be used on regular servise;
      The are to costley to run, require a shedload of maintenance and you need at least 2 people to run it. Diesel or Electric loco's are far cheaper and safer to run. (Have a bit to little water in the boiler while moving over the top of a hill and you can have an explosion)
      Also, verry few people would like to shovel coal into a hole while in a verry hot moving kettle...
      Maybe for one day or a week, shure, but it is just not of this time anymore.
      Also, if you watch the docu on tornado doing 100mph, you can see while doing the historic thing, there are 2 firemen just getting a shovel of coal in every 2-3 seconds. With pendelinos and HST's and other high speed trains and with the fact that steam is not verry good at acceleration, they would only slow down trains and cause congestion.

      Steam commuter services are unlikely to happen again but West Coast Railways popular "Jacobite" trains are run every day of the year from April to October with steam traction, but there's a selection of engines available in Fort William so that if one loco is taken out of traffic for maintenance or repair work there will still be another loco available.

      Perhaps there just wasn't enough surviving footage available at the time. And from what I can work out, the Castle Communications Express Steam series was mostly based around loco classes that were represented in preservation at that time; the only two exceptions I know of were the Counties, which were loosely based on the Modified Halls with different boilers and driving wheels, and the Peppercorn A1s, construction of a new member of which had only just been launched while the rushes were being filmed for this series.
