Magic stuff. This move is hard to do but really has an amazing impact on how you create the right sequence and compress the ball. If this guy was in the golfing coaches' equivalent of the Magic Circle he would be thrown out for posting this!
Hard to say what’s right for you without seeing it. It depends where you are at the top but I don’t like people pulling down, more of allowing the shaft to drop before rotating!
......of course you also demonstrate that move with the arms at about 3:30 in a down the line view from the camera orientation. So is this arm drop passive or active? Thanks Jon. You've taught me so much in so little time. Hope to take an online type lesson with you soon.
This is a really interesting drill. I would love to see a slow motion video of a normal swing just to see how this plays out in "real life," without the aid of the bucket. Also, who is a good example of this move on the tours these days? It would be good to see that swing in slow motion as well, just to have a good "movie" in mind when practicing. Thanks!
Hi Jon, very good and informative stuff. My problem is (if it's a problem) that I can get into this prefered "delivery" or impact position if I take the club back on the same path - that is what feels like a shallow takeaway that feels too much on the inside.... Why is it that most pga teachers do teach the opposite takeaway that is straight back - why not teach same movement back and forth?
+Gunnar Á. Bjarnason Thanks, glad you enjoyed. Okay for club to move on same path back and down. Issue with the club working too much around your body is generally the face opens too much and shoulder turn completed early, generally causing a lifting movement to the top.
Jon, a lot of teachers say to get the hands moving toward the ball from at the top, in order to shallow the club. They argue dropping the hands will steepen the club. I can see how what you are saying works well for you. So can both be correct? Is this a right vs. wrong? Or perhaps just a personal preference? Thanks.
I’m happy with the arms moving a little out towards the ball as long as the hand path is moving in through impact. I just never want to see players try to pull the handle. If you allow the arms to naturally drop they will move a little out towards the ball as the torso rotates. As you said there is no exact amount for all, impact is what matters! I hope you’re keeping well!
Hi Jon......your videos are wonderful. I've been voraciously viewing and reviewing many of them since I discovered your site a few weeks ago.....and my UNDERSTANDING and EXECUTION have dramatically improved. One question, which I asked in response to another of your videos in a roundabout way .....In THIS video at 1:15 until 1: 24 or so, you demonstrate the hands and arms dropping to the right hand pocket or almost at the level of the right thigh and then the move through impact and around to the left. Are you actively trying to push your hands/arm unit down to that spot or are you letting them drop by gravity......I believe one way or another this is the part of my swing which now needs the most clarification. Thanks so much for your time.
+Vance Weber Definitely allow them to drop rather than pull down to this position. If the lower body starts the downswing as shown, the arms will start to drop and shallow the clubshaft. Regards, Jon
+Tony Tanti if you can develop this squat move, maintain posture it will definitely help. The club tends to get trapped behind the player when there body extends early or slides towards the target. Give it a go, and let me know progress!
One of the best golf instructors on TH-cam.
Wow thank you for your support Eric

I got it. Thanks a lot!
Great! How’s the golf been?
Great video, Jon. How do I get on plane without driving the right elbow or getting it below the left arm?

Will perhaps re-film to show. Most do it. Rory does it very well, almost a squat then extend lead side into impact!
This really helps with lag to when you squat. If you don't keep angles you hit it fat when lowering.
Thanks Paul. I really like this drill!

So the chest powers the strike and provides the momentum through the ball..
I would say it was just the chest but definitely clearing of the lead side into impact!
I drop the club too inside and really drop my hands too much...will this help or make my problem worse...I get stuck all the time

he is good :)))

Great leg work, Slaming Sam!
