Agreed. But for some reason, AC and LV and SailGP have chosen to stupidly ignore the only truly relevant speed numbers in a race yacht. Massively frustrating, because it shows they all think we are morons. :( It is certain all the commentators have been told (in no uncertain terms, such as "You'll be instantly fired!") that they must NEVER mention the most evil acronym in all of sport; VMG.
The 'made for TV' sailing area is the problem. The legs are too short and too laterally constrained to provide any tactical opportunity. If you lose the start the only way back in is a mistake by the leader.
That is simply and demonstrably untrue according to thousands of foil-racing statistics over many years now. Mistakes are what have always turned boat races - and are not something to complain about when happening. FYI: Loose is what bowels can be. Lose is the opposite of winning.
I think the racing course should atleaest be a triangle if not a square ,if a square each corner is set at true north west east and south with no deviation from that and that would mean reading the wind and mistakes and of course tactics are more in play than outright speed although a nessacary component a well .
If their tactic had worked it would have been impressive and laudable. To not have tried a new tactic would have been pointless and uncompetitive A match hardness has not emerged yet in the Ineos team..

As a kiwi I’m rapt to see ETNZ and their yacht performing so well. But as a lover of yacht racing and the AC, the sport needs much closer competition than this, to retain and attract spectators. And competitors.
As a Brit I have to say that you guys really have nailed these AC 75's and your set up and teamwork is the perfect package. But, there is a lack of boat on boat like we used to get.

Yes must agree , perhaps it's the constraints of the course . Back in the day courses we larger and boats so much slower, a slightly larger course my offer more opportunities for passing.
The only difference between this and Ineos of old is that they managed to get back up on the foils quite quickly. So that is at least some progress for them !!!
I cannot and will never understand how the nz government said no to helping the team hold this competition in NZ. They needed to fix the problems they had regarding who pays for what,etc…..and get on with it…….. I would have expected better from Sir Ben. It's not like he hasn't sailed these boats before. Ineos Brittania have a lot of work to do if they don't want to be the first boat eliminated when it kicks off. Surely they must of realised that having the rudder foil pulling the stern down a bit creates drag so less speed. Should of stuck with the rest of the teams until maybe in the future when they understand these beasts better, then they can experiment more.

I surely hope that the more consequential later races will be released with the unobscured crew comms available for each team. It's just too depressing to have the boats approaching a mark (eg M6 in this race) only for McIvor to talk over their canvassing of their options with mundane info about leg number and such, information which could far more appropriately and less disruptively be conveyed numerically by text or icons in a corner of the screen.

Not sure who thinks that boats finishing a kilometer apart is match racing. Commentators have nothing to talk about. "Ghost boat" is a complete waste of computer code. The Americas Cup has become a special interest group for nerds who have turned what used to be a brilliant spectator sport into a complete farce.
They would have learned nothing about TNZs playbook and how to avoid its traps by playing safe and going for a "least worst" startline outcome. They can't realistically hope to teach TNZ many lessons yet, but all the more reason to maximise what they can learn in these early races where points are trivial.

Ainslie is no slouch, he has plenty of experience, if the performance of your equipment is not on point there is not a lot you can do. It is early days but if it continues it does not bode well for Ineos.

Racing the 12m back in the days was much more interesting. Watching a race (with fascinating boats) like this...just boring. After the start nothing happens.
A better idea, in my view, would be to shut up the routine update /continuity chatter during and adjacent to manoeuvres, so we can actually hear the sailors' thought processes, rather than listen to speculation about them.
As a man interested in crewed sailing competitions I have never seen a "race" as dull and boring as this one. The sport is being killed by technology right here. Signing out.
The problem facing the America's Cup today is that the technology has advanced so far that, if you make the smallest mistake like falling off the foils, you are generally a goner. This has happened (to NZ's advantage) in both their races so far. This time it happened before Ineos was even over the start line and makes for very boring watching, - NZ were over a kilometer ahead at one stage, so there are no tacking duels etc like we used to see in the monohulls. The sport seems to be engineering its own demise.
I hope Luna Rossa wins so that they take away the Kiwis' ability to decide which boat to race with. Great sailors, but incapable of developing a boat concept that can guarantee spectacle and real sporting competition. It is not possible to see a sport that is decided at the start and that makes it impossible to come back unless someone else makes a mistake. Does anyone remember how good the America's Cup organised by Alinghi in Valencia was?
Yes, as a sailor of the 32nd AC in Valencia, the last 4 generations have been so disappointing to watch, to the point that I don't even follow it anymore.

This is early days in the comp. To write off this class now is silly. Every Americas cup is dull in the early stages. Some teams are off the pace, and playing catch-up. It’s no different now to 50 years back. The technology in 2024 is just light years ahead. 100% as we progress through to the latter stages and the weaker teams are eliminated, and we are left with the serious contenders we will see some incredible racing. And the matchups are close.
With all the technology gone into these yachts, would be good if the commentary services had more improved coverage, to match these sailing machine s, as they get around the course .....quite a boring viewing otherwise.

Having a good boat is one thing- which NZ undoubtedly has- but NZ are bloody good sailors- and that's another thing.

This time it happened before Ineos was even over the start line and makes for very boring watching, - NZ were over a kilometer ahead at one stage, so there are no tacking duels etc like we used to see in the monohulls. The sport seems to be engineering its own demise.

The early LV races were almost always thus, last AC in particular, but the finals were spellbinding

I hope Luna Rossa wins so that they take away the Kiwis' ability to decide which boat to race with. Great sailors, but incapable of developing a boat concept that can guarantee spectacle and real sporting competition.
It is not possible to see a sport that is decided at the start and that makes it impossible to come back unless someone else makes a mistake.

Yes, as a sailor of the 32nd AC in Valencia, the last 4 generations have been so disappointing to watch, to the point that I don't even follow it anymore.

Did you even watch the NZ vs Prada final in the last cup? It was 3-3 at one point with great racing.
This is early days in the comp. To write off this class now is silly. Every Americas cup is dull in the early stages. Some teams are off the pace, and playing catch-up. It’s no different now to 50 years back. The technology in 2024 is just light years ahead. 100% as we progress through to the latter stages and the weaker teams are eliminated, and we are left with the serious contenders we will see some incredible racing. And the matchups are close.
With all the technology gone into these yachts, would be good if the commentary services had more improved coverage, to match these sailing machine s, as they get around the course .....quite a boring viewing otherwise.
