Calf Rescue And Metal Detecting Adventure

- Fantastic metal detecting adventure with lots of cool buttons and some Civil War Minie balls. I explore an old log cabin homesite that includes the remains of the chimney foundation, the outline of where the old house stood, faint remains of several outbuildings, and the old well not far from the house. I also discover a small calf that had its head stuck in a fence and with the help and blessings of the landowner was able to free it to live for another day.

My rancher neighbor and I were out checking calves one day when a big red Angus started following us. As we got further away from the herd she stopped and watched. Driving to the furthest part of the pasture we found where she had hidden her calf. Picked it up, held on tight as it tried to jump off the side-by-side and started back towards the cows. When she saw us with her calf, she literally stood up on her back legs and leaped into the air, all four legs off the ground. I'll never forget watching her leap and bounce with total abandonment as she watched us get her calf to her. Truly one of my all time memories.
Awe Chigg you are such a sweet man.Thank you for helping that little calf. A true detectorist to lay it down for nature. You never cease to amaze me with your adventures and kindness.

The big iron plate is actually a door off of a J&E Stevens kitchen stove and oven, about 95% sure about that. They made irons, stoves, cookware and went out of business in the late teens. I have a Stevens frying pan and a coffee mill.
looks like a George Stevenson from the Thomas, Roberts Stevenson & co. The design style is a match as well when you compare it to the online pictures of complete plates.
You are a caring man, Chigg. That calf would be very glad to get out from under that fence.
I was able to find that exact fireback or furnace plate on the new york historical society website. Search george stevenson 1763. Looks like they were produced by mary ann furnace.

Snakes were popular symbols in the Victorian era. Wedding bands were shaped like entwined snakes (Queen Victoria had a snake wedding band). They were symbols of eternal love.

Awesome hunt chigg. We didn't find alot of gold an silver this go around but there's always tomorrow. An tommorow is another day. We did alot of cool relics of the days gone bye. That gear looks like a part of the sawmill for pulling boards through a planer. Great video really enjoyed it thank you for posting it keep up the good work so much of what is going on

Some of those irons did not have handles but had an attachment that a handle would drop the cooled iron onto wood stove and then would lock onto a hot iron ready to use...watched my grandmother use such an iron.

The Blacksmith tool was part of a top tool like a swage or a hot cut. It is a stuck tool hence the mushrooming on the pol.
That thick button is interesting. Loads of fun stuff that afternoon.

that hinge looking thing looks like the back of a belt buckle. like the boy scouts had.
We have an iron just like the one you found except it is in much better shape because it was never buried in a field.

The bit of porcelain with squiggly lines and dots has a pattern similar to some calico buttons. Calico buttons were made starting about 1840, according to a bit of online history I found.

That gear at 1905 may be an old hand forged mechanical locking gear for a hand cranked winches. Used to use those to open wooden grain silo doors back in the day here in America's hat (Canada).
at 1926 - not a weird saw, it's a one-way ratchet pawl, wind it one way it rotates, wind it the other, it blocks, like on a cable-winch.
the handle might not be broken off that old flat iron chig. some of them had removable handles so the hausfrau could switch out a cooled off one for a hot one off the stove and keep on ironing.
the round gear looking bit looks like part of the blades to an old meat grinder like my grandmother used. the square hold was part of the shaft sticking out that you could attach different blades to grind the meat finer or courser.

Several years ago I help save a farmers bull that got stuck in some barbwire. It got stuck in the tail end of his pond where the fence went across. He always tried to chase me out before but now after we worked for about three hours to get him loose he tolerates me.👍☮️🤔

That little gear that you found that you thought was a small saw blade I do believe is actually a ratchet gear for a fence stretcher
