We're interested to hear the kind of challenges drivers experienced when turning off the racing line? Were you slower or faster initially? How about 2 weeks later?
Thanks for another great video, been a few months in Sim racing with a wheel and I’ll definitely try with the racing lines turned off. Probably will have a hard time with the breaks in entry and trail breaking(when to end and throttle)I’ll let u know what happened. Thanks!
I’ve turned it off ages ago. Turned it back on for a little while when struggling to lap Bahrain in under 1:26.5 (F1 2021) to examine if it really is better or worse with it on. Turns out I felt worse as all my references changed and worst of all it forced me to start really attacking corners like a maniac which leaked time like water out of a fireman’s hose. Defo line off is better💯
The obvious is the braking point specially when the 100 meter or 50 meter mark or other reference is removed by incidents during the race or game bug or is raining a lot and you are trying to overtake. Additionally, Minimal apex speed to maximize corner exit. Finally the racing line as the grip varies between turn to turn. If there is more tips it would be AWESOME to learn. Congrats on the videos. It is very nice to watch.
As a long time lurker to the channel, I appreciate these videos. I've tried turning off the RL many times but always have a problem judging pace through the turn with it off. I don't use the racing line as a guide for my path but as a visual substitute for the sense of speed. It's the sense of when I should be easing off the brake or applying the throttle that I've never been able to grasp w/o the color code of the racing line. Don't get me wrong, the racing line is distracting AF, so flying solo I turn it off with reduced AI, but I'd get lapped by half the field in a league race if I didn't have it on.
Thanks for the support! We are really happy that we are able to make this content for everyone to enjoy! If there is anything you'd to see if a video please let us know.
@@driver61simracing10 What I would like to see is you actually commenting on my mistakes. I've been simracing since 2008 and there was a time when I was competing with the top guys of Gran turismo. I was even in GT academy in 2013. But it's difficult to keep that same level when I don't have time to practice as much. Would be cool if users submit tracks they have difficulties with and you could do a 25 minute long video where you comment on our mistakes.
@@diabolicseed I think there's plenty of time for both. A track tutorial is always helpful but even then mistakes can be made. Usually when I wanna do time trial I always watch the world record when I'm stuck, that usually helps me
Feel like a good addition to racing games would just be a braking point indicator, but without the racing line through the corner. This allows you to make your own braking / acceleration decisions after you initially start to brake without having to memorise braking points for every circuit
inicial i was slower, but few days after turning the virtual race line off im around 1,5 to 2 seconds faster per lap....... namely cus the virtual race line is made in a way that is just for a safe speed on the conner and not for the car limit speed on that conner...... PS. Sorry my bad english..... keep the good work love your channel.
Little late to the party here, but if you're playing F1, you can turn on Rival Telemetry in the Time Trial settings. Set your rival as one of the top runners and you can see their exact pathing and braking lines that they used for that hotlap.
I watched a braking video and this one, and my times got quicker. After hearing you say these things, it made perfect sense. It's right there, but overlooked. And I was in the habit of trying to brake later, but a smoother exit is proving faster. Thank you.
I support turning off all assists as much as possible, but I don't actually mind racing line (or just corner lines) as they are just another reference point and reflect your current speed on top of that. So for short sessions it's just so easy to get the feel of how much later can I brake and it even accounts for any speed delta, which stationary reference point wouldn't do for me and I would have to adjust for that on the fly. Honestly I just feel the problem is not the assist itself, but it's how people use it and how much they obey it. I still fully endorse learning to race the proper way, but I wouldn't force everyone into turning it off if it meant they would spend less time with their family as they "have to practice a track for tonight's race with friends".
The way I see it, the racing line is just another reference, same as with braking points. It's there to guide you, but you also have to learn when and by how much you shall deviate from it.
Following up. I am headed into my 3rd 1:1 lesson with Driver61. It has really made a difference in terms of understanding the theory, strategy and technic. Watching the F1 championship helped a bit too!!
I love these video's, im learning so much about sim racing and all for free, massive respect to Driver61 for giving this to us. You turn sim racing from a game to a more professional career type thingy...! Please keep these lessons coming ✊🏻✊🏻
I have no problem understanding racing lines. But I still can't drive without it cause I have no idea of every corner's braking zone. Remembering every braking point would take a lot of effort and having the racing line as a guideline for braking points but not relying on it as the racing line I found works best for me. The problem with Apexes in the F1 game is that if you touch some inside curbs (for example turn 2 of spain and turn 5 of hungary). If you touch those even a little bit it does not matter if you're fast or slow or on throttle or not, you always spin.
This exactly, I loathe driving without the dynamic racing line on. Ironically, I don't need the racing line to tell me what my racing line should be, I just need it to tell me how fast I'm going and where I should brake. I do quite a bit of karting in real life, and stuff like judging speed and braking zones just comes naturally there, while I don't really have enough sense of speed and distance in the game. Having to memorize braking zones is a chore, and I play the F1 games to have fun and relax, so I play with the line on.
Best tip for removing the racing line is that you need to accept you're just gonna be slow until you learn the tracks properly. You just need to dedicate some time where you're not competing, do practice sessions and drive the tracks slow. Be disciplined with it. Keep your mind on the end goal and don't get distracted trying to be fast or by racing other cars. Just learn to enjoy and appreciate the tracks on your own before competing until you're feeling confident. Most of it is just learning the braking points anyway so it shouldn't take too long for most people if you've already got solid experience with the game. Side note, I really enjoy the classic cars for practice, much simpler to drive, no worries about DRS, ERS, tyres, etc. BrawnGP is an incredible car and you really get a more natural and organic feel for the tracks in that car I've found.
Hey Scott, banger of a video mate. I've just bought a sim rig and this is exactly what I was looking for, other channels don't even bother with this probably because it takes a lot more effort to make. I can't believe you're only getting ad-revenue for this
I hate the racing line. Sometimes the racing line is not the fastest line for me, I never ever use it. I’d rather do 100 laps to learn the track rather then start using it.
A great explanation about the importance of good braking skills. This in turn highlights the need for good quality pedals. Cheaper pedal sets with potentiometers will only add problems when their inputs are inaccurate due to dirty contacts making improving harder than it has to be, and this occurs far too frequently if you're driving regularly. Buy good pedals and save yourself the grief. It will cut months off your learning curve. I speak from experience {cough}T3PA
I never used the racing line assist to determine my ideal racing line, i always do a line that i feel confident about the car's speed and stability, but the braking point is a problem for me, since i don't have a good memory. I use just on the corners (This option is avaliable) to have a reference of where to brake when I'm coming faster than usual (For example, using DRS, Overtake Mode or both) My ideal racing line is never the one that the game suggests. For example, when playing Assetto Corsa Competizione, my line for Variante Ascari (Monza) and the Chicane RACC (Barcelona-Catalunya) is to always keep it as tight as possible throughout the first part of the chicanes to have a better and faster exit, while the game suggests me to do the shorter line instead of the faster. At Silverstone (In the same game), things are the same at Village - The Loop part. The game suggests me to go as fast as i can on the first one and keep it tight at the second one, while i keep it tight at the first one to open the exit of the second one
@Driver61 Sim Racing Could you go through the use of pro steering wheel, how to use Diff +/- and Brake bias? I upgraded my rig from Logitech G920 to Fanatec, but I am still stuck on the old setup, just using ERS and DRS buttons, and Pit limiter. Cheers, love your vids.
I have the Logitech g29. But I just can’t get used to it in f1. I’m much better with controller. But I definitely notice I’m less precise. Can you make a video on that?
Completely agree with everything here! Great explanation, I'm also guilty of having used to rely heavily on the racing line 😂 still not super fast either, but it's fun trying 🤣 Racing line's good in free practice for maybe half an hour or so to get an idea of braking points etc. for a new track, but ultimately in a race, it's more of a distraction focusing on that instead of what's going on around you, and it won't necessarily be the same with other cars around anyway if they're too close
I'm really struggling turning the line off on f12021...ive learnt the first few tracks and trying to learn France but I'm still quicker with the corner line on.
Does any one else do this in sim? I use for breaking point the moment an object reach the edge of the computer screen. One of the advantage is that it is less often blocked to my view by an other car.
The principles are always the same & good to learn, you'll have an easier time easing off/on the brake & throttle however with a wheel and pedal setup from the Greater precision they allow from controller triggers.
Which base do you have? I had the T300 and it constantly overheated but now I’ve got the ts-xw, which is the exact same as the Ts-pc in the video, I’ve had zero problems with heat or loss of feedback. Even with everything foaled up to 100%
I need help. My green bar, it shows speed or something, but mine doesn't get full and it that means my car doesn't drive to its full speed. What do i do?
It probably means your throttle isn't properly calibrated. If you used pedals you'll need to go into the software for them and calibrate. If you're on a gamepad, i unfortunately don't know how to fix that (perhaps in-game settings can help)
Sometimes when I go online people are too fast. unrealistic because they are using the pad. They should separate people that use wheels and people using a pad. Also separate ppl using driver assist and those with them turned off.
