At the South Battery on Governor’s island drummers and fifers were trained prior to and during the Civil War period. The most famous was young Augustus Meyers who later wrote a memoir which covered his time on the island. He wrote about the sleeping quarters in the south battery bunkhouse with its fireplaces and hooks around the walls where their equipment would hang. He talked about drinking coffee out of porcelain bowls and the antics and jokes that were made after lights out. Really great account of what life was like.

I grew up on governors island when it was a coast guard base. I haven’t been there since 1974 but would like to see it again someday. I have seen it a few times from battery park but haven’t set foot on the island.

It was a hell of a place to live and a tight knit community before Clinton shuttered it and the non-historical areas fell into total disrepair. Amazing place with the best of both worlds. Safety and community of a small town and 15 minute boat ride to one of the greatest. most culturally-enriched cities on Earth.

Stationed there 1970-1972 and 1973-1975 in ETA School and as an ETA School instructor. Was like going home as I grew up on an Army base.
