Awesome filming MK&H Aust, do you know how frequent it is when these ballast trains go through? I saw in the deacription above that there is now only very few trains monthly but do you know about how many and if there’s a timetable for them too?
Thanks! The ballast trains only operate when needed, sometimes it can be weeks without any trains and then you get them several days in a row. There is no timetable that I know of, but the empty trains usually leave Chullora about 10am and arrive at Bombo around 1 or 2pm. The loaded trains normally leave Bombo around 4pm.
Would have been interesting to see the General Signals E bell/WCH mechanical bell that used to be here. Didn’t the old Princes Highway crossing have 12 inch lights?
Sure would have been an interesting bell combination, I guess the salt air killed them off. I don't remember the old crossing having 12 inch lights, the only thing I remember is the 8 inch lights and teardrop bell in the early 1990's, although it could have been upgraded later.
th-cam.com/video/u9YQ6w7Qh_g/w-d-xo.html if you skip to 23:06, you'll briefly see a ballast train reversing into the siding over the old crossing setup.
McK&H Aust I wonder if salty air around Woy Woy killed the GS E bell there, as I can’t hear it at 22:33 in this video. th-cam.com/video/QPShGDqvcx0/w-d-xo.html
I saw that video a couple of days ago and couldn't hear the GS bell either, pretty sure it was only installed around 2014/15 so it didn't last long. I guess it could have been the salty/humid conditions which killed it. I'm probably going to be passing through in the next week or two, so will try to see if it's been replaced.
Nice. I do have to say, but when the engines stopped on the crossing, they sounded like they were powered by some SD40-2 engines. Nice and like your videos
2:00 the crossing activated rather late! 6:04 that's neat that the two engines are numerically twins! 6:49 so the the train stopped for the crew to activate the crossing in that direction! 9:37 they stop really close to the pedestrian crossing! Those ballast cars have a nice livery! usually ballast cars are plain brown or gray! Nice to see the rest of the blallast train activity!
Thanks! The crossing doesn't have approach track circuits, so is activated manually or if a train occupies the island. The ballast hoppers do have a nice livery, sadly most of them are ruined by graffiti.
Probably one of your best videos. Showing the process and the crossing from all sides. Great work.
Thanks!
The WCH e-bells replaced a WCH mechanical bell and a General Signals Type 2
Yes
Great video! Cool use of equipment and also cool that there is a give way sign while there are signals!👍👍
Thanks! The give way sign is for the intersection.
Good video
Thanks!
Very detailed video with many angles of the crossing's features...
Thanks!

23:30 I like that
