  • The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad from Antonito, Colorado to Chama, New Mexico is a living time machine were one can recreate scenes from the 1950's or before, when the line was owned by the Denver & Rio Grande Western.
In "Rio Grande Autumn Steam", enjoy freight trains that look just like the D&RGW in the 1950's or '60's along this amazing 64 mile line.
Watch a freight from Chama to Cumbres with steam locomotives on the front and rear, just like the Rio Grande Railroad used to do, followed by a second section with a single steamer. You'll also see a one engine freight out of Antonito.
Then, thrill to the action as a 30+ car freight travels from Antonito to Cumbres, with a mid-train helper, again just like the Rio Grande used to run through here.
    Our power is mainly K-36 2-8-2's #484 and #489, but we'll also see #487 and #488. There's also a segment with K-27 #463.
A fantastic documentary that any steam locomotive enthusiast will enjoy.

A trip to the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad for their photo freights with all operational D&RGW steam locomotives back in the year 2015.

I absolutely love that the 484 was the Pueblo & Chama Circus Train in the 3rd Indiana Jones movie. That will always take place in my heart as one of the most beautiful Locomotives in the world.

I would love to see the two railroads come back together with both railroads running on the same tracks.

Yeah, sorry to say it but that’s not gonna happen. The 110+ miles of tracks between Chama and Durango have been torn in the early 70’s. It is sad but I think we should be grateful for what we have of the Rio Grande. The Cumbres & Toltec is 64 miles and the Durango & Silverton is 45, that makes 109 miles. That’s a lot of narrow gauge nowadays

34 cars plus a caboose and two locomotives.
    Now _that_ is railroading!
C&TS has put on some amazing shows over the years but this has got to be one of the best I've seen thus far.

Its because the trestles are not strong enough to have two engines in the front together is why they have one engine in the front pulling and one in the rear pushing. Love fall colors. Because the Cumbres railroad is a mountain and plains railroad and not a river valley railroad track maintenance like the Durango Silverton and there fore is less is less time consuming and less tedious to maintain. You don't see the variations in track alignment , bent rail and bumpy rail like you do on the D&SNG. Its a much nicer and smoother ride as I remember.
The friends of the Cumbres do a great job in supporting the Railroad. Making it that much more enjoyable and for rail enthusiasts much more appealing.

Wonderful video. Great scenery. Was the song that was used during the Day 1-Chama Yard Switching Map Segment. Is that a Music Bakery Song or a Michael Lynch classic? Hope to hear back. Thank you.
