A fun fact about soviet smoke launchers: They shoot so far away because they are meant to blind a single position to you while allowing you to engage other targets. They are designed for offense moreso than defence. The black smoke also doesn't block thermal IRL, only newer white smoke grenades they make now.
So the thing about the smoke dispensers on the eastern block tanks is that they're not for defensive cover like western tanks. Instead tovarisch, they're for _offensive_ cover - they're to be used while you're advancing on the enemy to obstruct their view and close the distance. That's why the smoke cartridges get flung so far ahead of you.

also 5:35 yes firing HEAT at 2000m is suboptimal you can turn off the crew can select ammo in settings if you have it on
