2022 VW Jetta / SUV Practicality, Compact Price

  • The Jetta is not the fun, german take on a small car it once was, but that's not always a bad thing. With strong competition from the Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, Mazda3, Toyota Corolla and more, where does the Volkswagen fit in?
    Thank you, Royal on the Eastside, for letting me test out a Jetta!

    Bought a 2022 Jetta SE two months ago, for same trim and color that you've tested. Love it: torque, tech and got 42 mpg, going 450 miles to Kentucky. Good room and suroof size is a bonus. Seats are decent. Very torquey motor and can drop into Sport mode for highway passing, if needed. Demerits would non linear acceleration, sometimes unresponsive transmission, average sound system, and body roll. Steering is light and OK, but doesn't have the feedback. That said, for 26k, IMHO: cannot be beat, with exception of Honda Civic. Ačording to the Car and Driver testing, the 2022 Jetta is the fastest compact, 0-60, (7.1 seconds) along with Mazda 3, but the Jetta kills it fuel economy. Reliablity: time will tell, but i concur that 5k-6k for an oil change; 10k is ludicrous.

    It used to be normal to change the oil every 3,000 miles, but with modern lubricants most engines today have recommended oil change intervals of 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Moreover, if your car's engine requires full-synthetic motor oil, it might go as far as 15,000 miles between services!

    Watched the video again. Still considering a Jetta, but the more I think about it the more I think I'd just choose the S trim. With an automatic and no other options its a hair over 22K which is about as low as it gets for a decent car you wouldn't be ashamed to be seen in. Plus the cloth seats are softer, there's no rattling sunroof and the 16" wheels and tires are probably better riding and quieter. I'm just looking for a comfortable ride and good gas mileage, not so much an enthusiast driving experience. Pasadena VW in California doesn't mark up their vehicles above MSRP.

      I agree to all of this. I want a good looking but invisible car and the big tire 16 inch wheels, no sunroof are what I want! 22k beats all other comers ( perhaps the Nissan Sentra I would compare) review of Civic are even noisier ride, not as good looking or comfortable or as good mpg. I would like an 8 inch high res screen an backup camera and front and rear parking sensors in the base model for 2024. Hoping that in end of this year can get 2k off the sticker could you imagine a Base Jetta for 20k!!!!!!!!!!!!

    This car is special: you get a gray interior instead of all (or nearly all) black interior as in most other models.
    This reason alone is why you should consider it.
    That 185 ft-lb. torque is nice too for city driving.

    Just bought this car in manual! Glad I did. Was super hard to find, actually flying somewhere to get it. Hope I like it but from what I remember from a rental vehicle it was very smooth at cruising speeds. Price is decent too, new civics these days go for a few k more

    Old IU grad here. Nice review. My 2014 Jetta SE has been extremely reliable and enjoyable (if not fun) to drive. I'm in the market for a new car, but every brand is scarce these days and mostly selling above MSRP. I've been on the waiting list for a Corolla Cross XLE FWD for five months with no end in sight.

    You said the same thing I thought of Jetta seats. Hard. I drove an 2019 SEL with the leather seats and after about a half hour my butt was sore! Plus the hard console was right where my knee wanted to rest (6'3" also, long legs).

      The 2022 SEL leather seats are pretty decent! Much better than the seats on my 2020 Lexus RX450! Only complaint on 2022 SEL is you can’t raise or lower the passenger side front seats.

    • @Realistick
      @Realistick  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Satellite radio comes on the SEL, passenger seat doesn't raise but that's pretty standard for the class. And the issues dropped off after those years and I talk about it in my reliability segment at the end.

    @ak2112 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    These are totally fine as long as you keep it around 22-23k with a stick. They’re a great deal in that range. Once you start moving up trims and price, the competition is much more appealing.

    • @Realistick
      @Realistick  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I'd agree, but even at 29 grand, most cars in this class won't have ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, the ambient lighting and immense space on the inside. I'd still want better quality for the price, however, it still has more features for the money than most, so it still makes sense. This argument more so applies to the VW Taos imo, which has largely the same features, but will run you 35 36 grand in sel awd form with the same engine!

  • @shredblue8536

  • @mountainhobo
    @mountainhobo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Stick is nice, but this Jetta feels tired and cheap. Also, and that's just me, since I tend to keep cars for a minimum of 10 years (I mostly buy Japanese + Korean + an occasional Ford), German cars are pretty much a no-no.

    • @Realistick
      @Realistick  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      She definitely feels cheap, especially in lower trim models. It definitely picks priorities and forgets others so i understand that. This is for the person that wants size, gas mileage and features, but doesn't want to pay much for it. I'd tell someone to go with a Civic, mazda3 or Corolla if they wanted quality and longevity!
