If Kirk was fired because he was gay, why wasn't Holliman fired? Maybe Kirk wasn't fired because he was gay, but because of the arrest for weed, or because he couldn't do the part. Holliman was gay, but he was a fine actor and delivered. Maybe Kirk just couldn't deliver. Maybe you're looking for a story that doesn't exist.
Why would you suggest that maybe Kirk couldn't deliver when he'd already proved his acting chops in numerous films? The truth is, Kirk was fired not only because of the drug charge, but because he'd had relations with a 15 YO boy whose mother complained directly to Disney, who personally fired Kirk. This is well known and I'm surprised it's not mentioned here.
Mentioned in a commentary or making of another movie, Four Brothers (2005) starring Mark Wallenberg, Tyrese Gibson, Andre 3000, and Garrett Hedlund, Four Brothers is like the updated version of The Sons Of Katie Elder and none really saw or knew about it except someone did though.
@2:06 The naration says the name of the book is "Life of the Marlow" yet the image clearly shows the book's name to be "The Fighting Marlows". The book "Life of the Marlows" was a revised edition by William Rathmell.
Yes, the boy was underage. His mother went to Walt instead of the police. Tommy was lucky because all Walt did was fire him. The police would have prosecuted him.
True ! John Wayne appeared with Monty Clift and Rock Hudson during his long film career. it was well known in inner Hollywood circles that both were gay. It would appear that the Duke had no problem with co-starring with gays. He only had a problem with serving in the military during WW2. Though he got a draft deferment due to his being married and having four kids, he still could have voluntarily enlisted, as so many other stars did (Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart, Henry Fonda, Robert Montgomery, Tyrone Power, etc).
@@teastrainer3604 So what? That's besides the point. The point is he didn't enlist as so many other Hollywood stars did. Simple fact. So many people think of him as a "hero". To me, a true hero is someone who puts their life on their line for their country. It's easy to win a war on a Hollywood sound stage.
I heartily concur ! Does all this really manner after over half a century? Aren't there more important things going on in the world to be concerned with?

Right On ! Well said and well put !
Earl Holliman was also widely known to be gay. Why wasn't he replaced as well?
Total BS story. That's why.
There were many gay actors in Hollywood from the get go... so that was not a factor, the drug arrest most likely didn't help

You can either be yourself or what Hollywood wants you to be.

I think there was another story about Kirk's association with a younger person, underaged but not mut younger than Kirk.

You obviously didn't do your research on Holliman.

@jubalcalif9100 Wayne was 35 years old when he registered. They weren't drafting people that old.

Sad
Kirk the quirk.
Ruin the good boy's life. Tommy was a good actor
Who cares...

Jesus John Wayne could not act at all
Watch The Searchers and Red River, then come back here and say that again.
He looked gay !
John Wayne never looked gay to me. Though he did have that quirky way of walking.....
Poor kid - born in the wrong era : (
Why a freak then, a freak now
😪😪😪😪😪😪
He was a good actor, homophobia has ruined the life and careers of many people. O hope someday we can get past that.
Not shocking. We know Wayne was a racist and homophobe. But 60 years later, I don't think we can tell why Kirk was fired.
Wayne married three Latinas and have seven children by them, and he cast Rock Hudson in The Undefeated. Try again.
Will the US ever get out from under the shadow of John Wayne?
I hope not.
Never. Get over it.
Hopefully not.
What a bizarre thing to say
@@Nitedawg1 Oh, I dunno -- if I said "Marian Morrison" you might agree with me.
DODGED OR WAS THAT PLYMOUTHED THE DRAFT.
Are we talking about trump now?
