Beautiful message. We Sikhs should rise above castes. Sikhism doesn't have caste. I stopped using my surname the day I came to know some villages in Punjab were having separate gurudwaras caste wise. How ashamed would be our Gurus seeing our actions. They fought against whole society for propagating the message of equality.

Actually there is a very strong reason jaats don't marry other castes. It is because jaats are the only people who are genetically undisturbed bloodlines of the great pandavas (from the mahabharat). And strong rules were made to preserve these genes as the jaats were meant to fight the upcoming kaurava bloodlines if they ever came back from the gandhar hills( iranian mountains). And this already has happened but forgotten. If you see prophet Muhammad was influenced by the kauravas while he traveled up to iran hence the muslim holy book was named kuran ( kaurava +aan). And the main hindu holy books were named purans. And if you know the jaats were the people to defeat the mughals in the northwest region of india and some of pakistan and we would have won over more of middle east if the British hadn't defeated us. This knowledge has been undermined over the passage of time. Think for yourself.

Caste system in the sanatan dharma were established to basically respect all forms of work, and people were given specific occupations so that there may not be a time when there are no people doing a particular job and the job is left undone. The Britishers and Mughals were the people who came and used the policies of divide and rule in the caste system to create more Christians and Muslims from various castes by making them feel lower thanother castes. Actually it's not your fault you think i am writing nonsense it is because you still believe in caste system as the British left it. Another beautiful example of such modifications by the British is that they described a shivling to be a representation of lord shiva's genitals, where as the lingum in sanskrit means symbol. I’m Chumar and experienced a similar situation with my ex. I was never exposed to this since I live in the U.S. but while dating my ex, talks with the family this exact situation came out without the comedic nature. Once I found out about the hypocrisy of Sikhi and Punjabi people, I slowly realized I want no part of it. Singh is a surname used by upper caste hindus and most Sikhs, chamar are people whose traditional work involved leatherwork, jatt are warrior castes, they all oppressed each other for centuries

Believing in caste is against the teaching of Gurus,the reason Guru Gobind Singh ji asked Sikhs to keep "Singh" and "Kaur" as surnames was to end the discrimination. sadly a majority of youth (even elderly) have forgotten these principles and use their caste surnames after "Singh" and proudly flaunt "jatt" in their songs,Social media profiles and life.

I never knew that caste system was so rigid in Sikhs as well ! I felt bad for laughing as well. I've been guilty of calling a friend of mine chamar when I was very young. I never knew how much weight it held if used in a condescending tone. When my mother got to know this she scolded me, but from then I've seen a lot of times she would refer to some of the people of lower castes as 'doms' privately. Was kind of hypocritical of her, but she always told me we should never hurt people's feelings like that and also it was too late for them to change these things about themselves. But they still instilled better things in me, knowing well that world is changing and acceptance and assimilation will be the key to a prosperous existence for everyone.

As a Hindu I say read your religious scriptures . In used to be like others too , a firm believer in Caste System . After going through our AUTHENTIC and supreme holy book Bhagvad Geeta🙏 I have changed my beliefs . I'm from India and I understand just how loaded and venomous these caste based epithets can be. Chamar (चमार) was derived from the Sanskrit word "charmakar" (चर्मकार) which translates to tanner in English. Historically these were the guys who used to skin dead animals and use their hide to make leather. Similarly, "bhangi" (भंगी) is another offensive word which literally means "someone who corrupts". Historically these were the sanitation workers. I'll be honest, the way he used "chamar" made me feel a bit uncomfortable but i guess that's the point. If we are able to nullify the insult associated with the word may be we can make the word harmless. Love and peace!

I suffered from this caste system during my school days , my classmates used to put me questions like " tusi jatt j ke majbi " if i told someone that I'm belong to majbi family they corner me...
As someone who comes from a pure Jatt Family, when moving to america, all the Jatts and Chumar make about the same money, live the same life, and you can't tell them apart nowadays unless mentioning something about where in India they are from. We are Sikhs, Caste System should now define us, we are all human!
I think tha jatt based songs are deepning the caste lines as other caste have started to specify theri caste identity too making the caste devide deeper .
Punjabi musalmans also have this issue but its not as pronounced. Rajputs, Gakhars, Jatts, Awans, Syeds, Abbasis, Gujjars, and Arain tend to consider each other equal and will happily intermarry. But they won't touch Chumars, Dobhis, Mirasis, Musallis, Kaasvis, Polis, and Mistrys. It all goes against Islam but its a part of the culture that refuses to die. Thankfully we dont have this issue with mosques and all pray together equally

Until the 60s when the Wallons were richer than Flemish thanks to the coal bussines The Walloons said Flemish weren't persons. They taught to their children to look down the Flemish Belgian. After the coal mines were closed and Flemish people became richer than Walloons the actitud flipped outthe actitud and now are the Flemish who are considered valious. Im not gonna lie, i was getting little offended in the beginning, because i felt that pain when i was in school and still sometime happens to me by some people i know(They were used to call me names, Calling me Chamarly and were saying that Ambedkar Statue tells that chamaars are living on that side), I was getting depressed and was lacking self-confidence. Actually there is a very strong reason jaats don't marry other castes. It is because jaats are the only people who are genetically undisturbed bloodlines of the great pandavas (from the mahabharat). And strong rules were made to preserve these genes as the jaats were meant to fight the upcoming kaurava bloodlines if they ever came back from the gandhar hills( iranian mountains). And this already has happened but forgotten. If you see prophet Muhammad was influenced by the kauravas while he traveled up to iran hence the muslim holy book was named kuran ( kaurava +aan). And the main hindu holy books were named purans. And if you know the jaats were the people to defeat the mughals in the northwest region of india and some of pakistan and we would have won over more of middle east if the British hadn't defeated us. Caste system in the sanatan dharma were established to basically respect all forms of work, and people were given specific occupations so that there may not be a time when there are no people doing a particular job and the job is left undone. I never knew that caste system was so rigid in Sikhs as well ! I felt bad for laughing as well. I've been guilty of calling a friend of mine chamar when I was very young. I never knew how much weight it held if used in a condescending tone. When my mother got to know this she scolded me, but from then I've seen a lot of times she would refer to some of the people of lower castes as 'doms' privately. Was kind of hypocritical of her, but she always told me we should never hurt people's feelings like that and also it was too late for them to change these things about themselves. But they still instilled better things in me, knowing well that world is changing and acceptance and assimilation will be the key to a prosperous existence for everyone.

I'm from India and I understand just how loaded and venomous these caste based epithets can be.
Chamar (चमार) was derived from the Sanskrit word "charmakar" (चर्मकार) which translates to tanner in English. Historically these were the guys who used to skin dead animals and use their hide to make leather.
Similarly, "bhangi" (भंगी) is another offensive word which literally means "someone who corrupts".
Historically these were the sanitation workers.
I'll be honest, the way he used "chamar" made me feel a bit uncomfortable but i guess that's the point.
If we are able to nullify the insult associated with the word may be we can make the word harmless.

I think tha jatt based songs are deepning the caste lines as other caste have started to specify theri caste identity too making the caste devide deeper .
Punjabi musalmans also have this issue but its not as pronounced. Rajputs, Gakhars, Jatts, Awans, Syeds, Abbasis, Gujjars, and Arain tend to consider each other equal and will happily intermarry. But they won't touch Chumars, Dobhis, Mirasis, Musallis, Kaasvis, Polis, and Mistrys. It all goes against Islam but its a part of the culture that refuses to die. Thankfully we dont have this issue with mosques and all pray together equally

Im not gonna lie, i was getting little offended in the beginning, because i felt that pain when i was in school and still sometime happens to me by some people i know(They were used to call me names, Calling me Chamarly and were saying that Ambedkar Statue tells that chamaars are living on that side), I was getting depressed and was lacking self-confidence. Even tho i was better than them in everything, in studies, and other things. But i didnt know how to reply them about it. If you are not a farmer or you don't have land doesn't mean that you are not a Jatt. Jatt is not a title, it's a race. If your ancestors are pure Jatt then you are also a jatt
