    My mom got this for me for Christmas the year it came out. She actually even started up the game before wrapping it to set the names on the save files to "Merry" "Xmas" "[name]". Really cool. This wound up being one of our favorite NES games, and it left a really strong impression on me.

      Man, I hope you still have the original cart and kept her message for the save files.

      Cool Mom, to know how to even make save files on a NES in the 80's. Not many moms play video games and in the 80's it was even less.

      Ugh. Same here. I ended up going through every possible combination, one by one, until I FINALLY landed on 747, but then it was time to return it. FML. Now that it's out on the Switch though, I'm FINALLY getting around to finishing it. Haha.

      @@2WhiteAndNerdy I've been continually starting a new save file on this game, making it past the first dungeon, forgetting what I was doing because I haven't played in so long, and starting over since at least 1998. I don't know if I'll ever finish this game after so many failed attempts. I guess I just need to sit down and play through it some time.

      I didn't have to go through EVERY NUMBER bc I thought about it... The other numbers they use in the game are MEANINGFUL NUMBERS. Not just random. 747 is literally the only 3 digit number I could think of that meant something at 8 years old

      My buddy got the game and we played it together. He was a bit of neat freak and when it said "dip my letter in water..." he was really worried we were going to wreck the letter. It was this huge process of getting his mom to put a small amount of water on a sponge etc. In the end we got it. What a great game.

    The difficulty of this game cannot be understated. FUCK are some of those last levels hard, I'd almost say downright frustrating because certain enemies are not only faster than you but take away a ton of health, and when you die you start off with a mere 3 hearts. If it wasn't so frustrating I'd go back to it a lot more often because the early dungeons with fairly manageable difficulty are fun to play through.

If I leave an area without talking to some random bystander who I know has nothing to do with the game, my brain begins to tick, it drives me crazy. Even *after* I battle NPCs in a Pokémon game, I talk to them to see what else they have to say.

  • @johntumahab323

    It may not go back to the beginning, BUT what really kills this game in the later levels is, unlike Zelda where you merely need the requisite number of heart containers to use a better weapon, you have to have those hearts be full here. And every time you die, you're stuck with only three hearts. Chapter Seven is almost impossible to do with just the Yo-Yo. It might not be if you didn't have that "face then move" set of controls making your movements so stiff, but this is one of those deals where the enemies can move far more fluidly than you can. And having all the heart containers doesn't mean much when the enemies start taking off five hearts when they touch you.
    What makes it worse is that the game keeps throwing "instant death" rooms at you at random, because the game is so much harder when you don't have one of the upgraded weapons. It basically resets you to the Yo-Yo.

    Star Tropics 2, was not as good as the original. While the control scheme is much improved, and the difficulty is balanced there is very little challenge to it. One of the best aspects of Star Tropics was that you were required to complete some kind of puzzle or brain-teaser in the over-world to progress to the next dungeon. It felt good to figure them out. The sequel cuts that, and cuts back on puzzles in general.

    • @koopakape
      @koopakape 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I definitely disagree lol. I do think both ST 1 and 2 have slightly unique appeals to them, I think at worst they're about equal. ST2 has a much wilder story, more varies areas and music, and I feel that the 8-directional movement and smoother controls make for a slightly better overall experience. Though I'll admit the first is very charming in a special way and the more deliberate grid-based movement feels more solid in some ways. They're both about the same difficulty too, with ST2 simply being slightly less frustrating at parts like the really hair-pulling end areas of ST1.....

    I first played star tropics and in fact streamed to my twitch channel a couple of years ago when I got the NES classic which I actually got almost a year after I got the SNES classic actually as I didn't cave into the scalpers and wait until these consoles were available in stores and when they happen to be I'd get them.
    Star tropics actually pissed me off because in that first dungeon I entered a room that instantly killed me. you jump into that room and then you fall in water as soon as you enter and you die. I stopped playing the game ever again knowing that. That is incredibly awful game design. How was I supposed to know that I would instantly die entering a particular room?

And yeah, the alien levels at the end are balls hard, especially Zoda. But I think I had the most trouble with that parrot's clue about what keys to play on the big piano. How many little kids are immediately going think of the "do re mi" scale when a parrot says "Do me so far, do me?" I actually remember thinking he was saying something dirty. Ha.

      That was the idea. Nintendo didnt like that their games were in video game rental stores. They tried suing Blockbuster, but couldnt. They eventually sued other video game stores for photocopying instruction booklets. Putting this parchment paper written code into the game was their way of slowing down the process of video game rentals. Remember, the internet didnt exist yet and these codes couldnt just be on the internet in a day if this issue came up.

This game is like my childhood dream vacation and it seems like something I would dream up for as a game in my childhood. I just want to go back in time I relive those moments. • @scottythegreat1
    @scottythegreat1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Its worth playing once, but making people talk to everyone after everything is said and done is tedious and extends the game longer than it needs to be.
    In short, Startropics was also to show off to game developers that it was possible to make a game without the need to reset a game before shutting the power off to hold onto saved game data. The MMC6 was designed for this reason, is uses the same coding and graphics capabilities of the MMC3, but didnt require the expensive MMC5 cartridges to keep saved data.
    Unfortunately, most of the games that used saved data opted to use the SNES instead and didnt have an NES port (only Koei's games were on both systems, and they used the MMC5), so the only 2 games that used this cartridge design were the 2 Startropics games.

    The fact that you had to dip the letter in water and could not do this if you had rented the game was 100% deliberate on Nintendo's part. They hated rentals and wanted to make them harder to be successful. This was one of the ways they did that.
    Also, if this game seems like Zelda in some ways, that's because it's based on the Zelda engine. But no, it is not "Tropical Zelda". It's just a different game that shares a lot of the same code, in the same way that Kid Icarus and Metroid share code.

    Yes I remember my brother rating this game when we got stuck on a stupid code of the robot if I can remember and I think the code is 747 but I could be wrong but we spent so many hours I'm trying to beat that code we even replayed it all over again and we couldn't find nothing

    I rented the game and that pepper was missing. Luckily, Nintendo Power was still around so I had to is call them.

    The only time StarTropics was referenced in Smash Bros was on the chronicle in Brawl only in the North American version!

    I always found it strange that you get a submarine but needed a dolphin to teach you how to dive.

    • @heritagekebek3029
      @heritagekebek3029 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not the dolphin who learn SUB-C to dive. But a inputted code by Mike...
      Replay the game...

      "Go back to Sub-C and you will give Nav-Com this new ID code. It activates Sub-C's diving
      capabilities."
      From Gamefaq. But i didn't needed this back in 1991...
      I still remember.

    I was one of those kids who rented this without having any idea about the code. The game's not even super explicit that the code's something separate from the game itself, so I just wandered around stuck until it was time to return it.

    I like this game pretty well, but the controls are so clunky and unresponsive that it makes the game harder than it should be.

    I threw away the paper I was supposed to dip in water and there was basically no internet. I called up Nintendo and they sent me another one and told me the code. :’)

    Great video, and it really makes me want to play Startropics finally for the first time! I always knew about it, but never dove into it yet. I like thew idea of it being tile base too, so u can run left, then turn up and shoot, without stepping up toward danger. Games that make you move toward the direction u are to aim alwys is annoying at times. NO worries for Startropics on the new mini NES because Nintendo patched the rom so you can look up the code in game now. This was added for the Wii VC version and they will use the same rom for the mini nes.
