  • I wrote this after half a bottle of gin, so this turned into kind of a rambling mess that meanders all over the place. I tend to do that when I get into Mega Man. I just love this series.

    Nice review, This is actually my fave game of the 6 nes titles. I'd have to disagree about MM4's weapons falling short of MM 2&3. MM4 had one of the better weapon balances in the nes games too imo. You have a screen clearing weapon, a bomb type weapon that you can detonate at will, a useful version of flash man's weapon, a homing weapon, a shield weapon and a multi hit weapon. Compare that to mm3 where majority of the weapons fire forward or mm2 where one weapon overshadows all the others. Weapons aside, I found MM4's level design to be a step up from the past games and hit a peak in the nes era. That said, I still enjoy all the MM games even MM&B.

      The thing about writing these as I'm playing in order is that... well, the weapons in 5 are way worse than 4. So had I remembered that, the stuff about the weapons would've been worded differently

    • @KarakatoDzo
      @KarakatoDzo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Pretty much, but I have people in my group chat finding weapons like the power stone to be very useful haha. I guess that's what makes mega man games great, giving players of different skill sets a variety of ways to tackle the game. Also, when playing the games chronologically, MM2 does seem to be a fan favorite while every other game following 3 doesn't get much praise due to fatigue. But taken on their own merit, each MM game, (sans MM5) offers a unique experience.

      It gets tiresome hearing reviewers go "Mega Man 4 is still a great game! But... -insert reasons here why it falls short of Mega Man 3." I constantly find reasons to use all the weapons in Mega Man 4. People grew up playing Mega Man 3, so naturally they're more familiar with the game, and how to properly use the weapons. If you plug as many hours into MM4, you realize its weapons are equally as useful. Except MM4 isn't plagued with the awful slow-down like in MM3, and features some of the coolest bosses in the franchise. For every awesome robot master like Snake Man and Gemini Man, I can match it with Pharaoh Man and Skull Man. And for each lame character such as Toad Man and Dust Man, I can point a finger at Top Man and Needle Man.
      Give me Mega Man 4 over all the other classic titles, any day. Its superb level design, plot and art style is the cream of the crop.

    Idk if I can fully agree with some of these points. Weapons here seem to have more flavor and use for me. Instead of 3's weapons being just different ways of shooting forward, 4 has some cool and fun weapons. Rain Flush is simple but effective. Pharaoh Shot cleans house. Dive Missle, while a bit squirrelly, can pick off troubling enemies, etc. The music is also better than stuff I have heard in 1-3s. I honestly do think that 4 is better than its older brothers.

The flash stopper, skull barrier, and rain flush are extremely handy, plus there are plenty of sections where you can use rush jet or balloon to skip tough level sections. To me, that's what makes a MegaMan game great.

    Loved the video, dude. Gotta disagree about the weapons, though. To me MM4 has the second best arsenal after MM9 (which is a comically OP arsenal anyway). The weapons in this game are super varied; just think about the moment you enter a room and how you can reach enemy X or Y across the screen. You always have an answer in MM4. You can freeze time, clear the screen, fire a homing shot, or one that goes through walls/enemies and comes back. Dust Crusher doesn't look too special but it kills a lot of strong enemies in 1 hit. Pharaoh Shot can be abused to hell with the charge. The only really sucky weapon is the shield.
    Great job as usual! Can't wait to see MM5 and 6.

    I agree with everything, but the weapons. I’ve found my uses of dive missile, found it better than magnet missile sometimes, although it circles around the target sometimes and that annoys me. Ring boomerang is great for piercing shields, but uses energy too fast. Dust crusher deals a lot of damage, but the extra projectile things never hit, I would’ve had it explode in 8 directions than 4. Rain flush is just a screen nuke, but it has a nice delay so you can’t spam it. Skull barrier isn’t too bad, but is just really underwhelming. I agree with what you said about drill, pharaoh, and bright’s weapons, especially bright’s that thing is chaotic.

    Good review, though I disagree about the weapon selection. Mega Man 4's weapons were at least more useful overall than Mega Man 3's weapons, depending on the situation. Such as the Dive Missile's homing capability, Rain Flush clearing the screen, Ring Boomerang's armor piercing, (and can retrieve items on MM 4 for Gameboy) and Flash Stopper stopping enemies briefly.
    Mega Man 5's weapon selection is actually worst, with maybe only a couple of weapons being useful.

    I've noticed in recent time that more and more people are starting to say Mega Man 4 is their favourite of the NES Mega Man games and I’m one of those people. I did enjoy Mega Man 1-3 but I never found them to be grand masterpieces that many led me to believe. They’re better designed than a lot of games during the same and even the 16-bit era (looking at you Sonic 2) but they still had annoying flaws. Fortunately, Mega Man 4 takes the best of the original trilogy and irons out the major flaws.
    The level design is very challenging with rarely a moment where the game feels boring to play through, more importantly however is that Mega Man 4’s level design is highly consistent in quality compared to its predecessors. There is some trial and error and cheap enemy placement but this is kept at a bare minimum in comparison to the previous games. Most of the challenge actually feels rewarding as well as cutting down a lot of the bullshit from the previous games. 1 had trial and error, 2 had poor enemy placement and 3 had the doc robots. 4 doesn’t have a single bit of majorly offensive design that pisses me off to no end. It’s all rewarding and satisfying design that rarely feels cheap and is overall well designed and fun to play.
    While I personally prefer the robot master stages from Mega Man 3, Mega Man 4’s robot master stages are still a riot to play through and is overall a lot of fun. One thing that is better than Mega Man 1, 3 and especially 2 is the weapon balancing. Mega Man 4 easily has the best selection of weapons of all the NES Mega Man games. The ring boomerang is a piercing weapon worth a damn, the rain flush is a screen nuke done right, the dive missile is a solid homing missile that works well for what it does, the drill bomb is actually what the crash bomber should have been, the skull barrier is a decent shield weapon and the flash stopper is the time stopper with far better execution. The only weapon I would say isn’t great is the dust crusher, it’s basically just a quicker way of shooting a fully charged mega buster. With that said, I’d take it over the worst weapons of the previous games anyday.
    The 2nd half of Mega Man 4 involves you travelling through Dr. Cossack’s stages and then you eventually take on Dr. Wily through his new set of castle stages. Mega Man 4’s 2nd half is what Mega Man 3’s 2nd half should have been. Instead of slightly different versions of previously played stages, you instead play through actual new stages with new graphics and design with much better boss battles. Can I just bring up how much I love Dr. Cossack? He’s a refreshing change of pace from Dr. Wily and the opening has Mega Man travelling on a train going to Russia to stop Dr. Cossack. It turns out that Dr. Cossack is doing this because Dr. Wily kidnapped his daughter who Proto Man saves before Mega Man almost destroys Dr. Cossack to death. Yeah, it has a dumb twist but I don’t mind since the game does do a good job of not mentioning Dr. Wily until the near end and it makes Dr. Wily more threatening than last time. It’s a good story and I liked it more than Mega Man 3’s story. Sure, Proto Man was great but you can’t take Dr. Wily helping out Dr. Light seriously in that plot.
    The boss battles are good but not great. More specifically the robot masters. They’re relatively hit or miss and they don’t pose a huge challenge. Thankfully, the bosses in the Dr. Cossack and Wily stages are a lot of fun with well telegraphed patterns, recognizable strategies and pose a fun challenge. They’re a lot of fun from start to finish even if the robot masters aren’t great to begin with.
    The graphics is about on par with Mega Man 3 only with more colourful and interesting environments so there’s not much to say here. The music, while not up there with 2 & 3’s music, is still some great stuff, plus, I cannot get enough of Dr. Cossack’s tracks, they’re so damn catchy.
    One last thing to address is that Mega Man 4 was the game that introduced the chargeable mega buster. Some criticize Mega Man 4 for introducing it but I think Mega Man 4 handles the chargeable buster quite well, it’s fun to use but it takes long to charge and it does the same amount of damage as the weapons you gain in this game. I mostly use the chargeable buster just to have an easier time against the robot masters, plus, because of this new mechanic, it’s much easier to do the buster only challenge than previous games. Because the weapons are so good in this game, I never found much of a reason to use the chargeable buster since, like I said, it does the same amount of damage except you have to charge it for 2 seconds so I prefer to use one of the weapons.
    To conclude, Mega Man 4 is a brilliant game and a huge improvement over its previous installments. It’s consistent, balanced, well designed and overall just a fun time with minimal frustration

I kind of laugh at every thing getting this OMG nes was so harddddd.. I mean yeah compared to today's games and you didn't grow up with NES that style of game might be hard for you to adjust to, but I consider today's games often far too easy and boring for them to be enjoyable for me, like watching a movie and going through the motions often. Man Megaman 4 is like the best designed NES Megaman tho, it has great weapon balancing, enemy placements are usually grand and it doesn't reuse the same enemies on most of the 8 initial stages making each stage really feel different. (imo at least) It does fall a bit short on the bosses once you learn how they work but on your first run of the game you probably won't notice how easy they can be. It's definitely better than MM1 and 2 that's for sure.

It's just.. .the stage is bad, and that boss is _fucking awful_, what were they thinking?

    We had Megaman 2 and 4 growing up. A friend had 3, and I played that some. At the time, it felt that 3 was the most hyped up of the games, because of bosses like Snake Man and Gemini Man. I liked 2 the best, and I loved playing 4. I liked how you could replay stages you already beat, the charged shot was fun, the hidden pathways that later games eventually used, although just to get the two extra assist weapons. I know I played the hell out of 2 and 4 though growing up. I later played all of them on PS2, with their collection series, and maybe it is nostalgia, but 2 and 4 were still my favorite, followed by 3.

It lags (debug stuff) it was rushed, because CapCom. lol they were pretty hammered when they started it, got ory-ental-developered: RUSH, the thing it since we have _jet_ . and I guess cut a ton of stuff...to have kind of sort fufulling game? used a level tester bot (seriusly that's all crashman was) and another for the DrFartFace things. I guess you needed to make sure the weapons worked somehow. The end result: a train wreck. MMX added...plot? oO JediEdgelord with...Rockman? because reasons? $$ probably

    Megaman 2 is just THAT good. And so is 4. I believe they're tied as some of the best action platformers on the NES.
    The X series has always been weird for me, they're great on their own, but they're also too damn hard for me. I usually stick to the 8 bit MM games. And that's weird since I usually prefer 16 bit.

    Man I remember having 2 and 3 as a kid, and thinking these games are as good as it gets! And when I heard 4 was coming out, I saved my allowance for what seemed like months... And I was mildly disappointed with the end result. I never thought it was hard, just as you said though, the bosses were weak! That was one of the cool things about the mega man series, the variety of bosses and the strategies to complete each stage. Even though I gripe, I still play mega man 4 every now and then, and I still rock out to the music! Mega man is just a staple of my childhood, these games always remind me of easier times! Thanks for the great reviews!!

    I do agree 4's not perfect despite it being my favorite Mega Man/NES game. Although when you mentioned the weapons not being that great... 2's weapons weren't the best either, don't get me wrong the metal blade's great. But there's stuff like time stopper that drained quickly and you couldn't use the buster during it and crash bomber which was pretty situational and had a delay in exploding. As for some of the robot masters, yeah Dust Man's goofy but so was Bubble Man lmao.

    "All the stuff you'd expect from a Megaman series is here".
    YES! EXACTLY! I don't really get why everyone else and their mothers shit on 4-6, from the HVGN to Projared to the screwattack dolts and 90% critics/reviewers in-between. What, did they expect Capcom to re-invent the fucking wheel or anything four years after its initial release? It's like they forgot how Nintendo already tried to do the same with Zelda 2. Megaman titles are simple, good-looking, great-sounding, tight-controlling run and gun games. If I'm having fun playing through them there's no reason for me to write them off regardless of how similar they are to one another. I'd be missing out.
    And tbh, some songs from 4 rank among my favorite MM tunes. Dr. Cossack castle 2 and Dr. Wily castle 2 are some incredible compositions that rival even the iconic Wily Castle 1 theme from MM2. It's the little details that matter and this game had enough in my eyes.

  • @JohannesYtterstrom
    @JohannesYtterstrom 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    "Everyone" seem to hold 2 and 3 extremely high. 1 pretty high and 4-5-6 very low. Did "you" even play the games back then? Did you put in the same kind of hours into it? I did it with 1-5. While I can agree that it is sort of the same game.. That's exactly what I wanted. The bosses in Mega Man 2 are overall way to easy.. That's something you rarely see someone complain about. Still a lovely game but it's not that perfect compared to the rest of series. I think all the games have their strengths and weaknesses.

    I absolutely loved MM4 back as a kid and that intro still gives me some serious chills.
    This is probably a bit nitpicky, but I disagree with the argument ''You can always just not use it'' regarding the charge buster. When a game provides such a strong option for no real cost, you're heavily incentivized to use it. Having the player do self imposed challenges does not excuse poor weapon balance. If the charge was a little slower, I could get behind it, but as it is, it seems a bit too good for a default pew pew gun.
    MM2 had the overpowered metal blade, but at least that used some resource. It's not game breaking, but definitely hurts the other weapons a bit, since they won't be as strong, relatively.

    Me and my friends who all were HUGE megaman nerds loved this game, it was the last megaman most of us played before moving on to the snes and megaman x though. Since we were all kids etc our parents didnt buy systems right when they came out but instead you usually got it for Christmas or birthdays a while after release.. So at least in my personal experience I wouldnt say that megaman4 was one of those games that got to late to the system. On the other hand megaman 5 and 6(specially 6) were less known.. Megaman 5 i only played as a rental at one of my friends who didnt get a snes and megaman6 i didnt play until i got older.
    The point with this comment though is that i dont think megaman4 is on the list of less known and loved megaman games, at least not among my friends and i assume it would be the same for most people in scandinavia, it might have to do with release dates for different games in different countries and stuff like that i dont know, but it quite surprise me that you say that megaman4 is forgotten.
    ps. i know i base this only on my personal experience and this is no proof that its not less known even among fans in scandinavia

    I think this game is severely under-rated. This wasn't quite the best Mega Man game (my vote goes to Mega Man 3), but you look at the graphics/music/cinematics of the original six games and to me 4 objectively stands out as the apex. It's right up there with Mario Bros 3 as the most polished game on NES. I honestly can't fathom why people hated the megabuster, it was the biggest innovation in the history of the series, though I'll grant that later games did it better.

Overlooking 4, 5, and 6 is a modern view, not at all reflective of the atmosphere around the games when they were released. Boy, ho, boy. I have this game, it was a present from my parentes, A.K.A. "the 3 wise men", and I have to say, I wanted Mega Man 3 because it was my first game and I had great moments playing it with my friends (and I couldn't finish), but when I resigned I really enjoyed this game. Today, in hindsight, I can honestly say that I find it to be the best Mega Man game on the NES, yes, maybe the robot masters are not the best, but what makes this game stand out, in my opinion, is the overall experience. Yes, Mega Man 2 has the theme of Metal Man, Mega Man 3 that of Spark Man, but Mega Man 4 is not far behind in terms of soundtrack; obviously (since it's a more recent game) both the gameplay and the graphics are more polished, but where it has no comparison (and the technical section has little to do), I think, is what the adventure conveys, the surprise when you find out that Dr. Cossack is nothing more than a victim, and that the real enemy is, again, Dr. Willy, and that you have to infiltrate yet another base, but also, that the last level of Willy's base is not really the last level, there is still another level, the last battle.

  • @colefitzpatrick8431
    @colefitzpatrick8431 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yep, you hit the nail on the head - a great platformer but the villains are lame and terrible. Aside from Pharaoh Man and Skull Man, who are legit cool in their own right, all the other robot masters look goofy, been there, done that, and dull. Cossack himself would be a cool villain if Capcom didn't get cold feet and just make Wily a formula villain every game, setting the stage for weak NES sequels to drag out Mega Man's legacy.
    After this game Mega Man, a star player of the Nintendo family, REALLY should've jumped to SNES. Hell, probably after 3, actually. Given the choice in 1994 between the blocky, old hat Mega Man 6 and the groundbreaking 3D Donkey Kong Country... Well, I don't have to finish that sentence. That's why people only talk about 2 and 3.
