    As someone who is used to the stability of a powerchair as I'm not afraid it'll tip easily, this gives me hope that I'll manage a manual wheelchair for the times I need to use it. Thanks.

    Thank you for the tips. I do not have damage to my spine,but other issues so I cannot bear weight on my left foot at times due to severe plantar faciatitis and chronic tendonitis. During these times I use a wheelchair around the house. It's too hard to use crutches,due to weakness on my so called good leg/foot. Biggest chalange is using the toilet. Your tips did help,thank you.

    Quick question I’m a new wheel chair user I had an accident where I’m now a T2 paraplegic and I just want to ask how you go about getting your pants on and off when your in the toilet and also whipping? I’m currently useing a shower toilet chair and what to just use the toilet with no chair but come across these obstacles.

    • @sam-lifeonwheels9861
      @sam-lifeonwheels9861  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I go into the toilet without clothes on in the morning, and use an incontinence sheet for hygiene on my chair to sit on (especially for after the loo). I use the bed to get undressed and re dressed. So much easier. It is possible in the wheelchair to pull up trousers or shorts, but hard work and I worry I’ll injure myself doing it Wiping just reach between your legs - use loo roll and wipes as normal to be honest. It’s good to learn the toilet transfer and use of it for bowel routine as it allows you to go places and not need to take a commode or anything. I have a new toilet seat with a gap at the front which makes life easier for at home.

    So I have a very small toilet room, there is no other option than to place the wheelchair directly infront off the toilet. There are no hold-ons on the wall, so how do you transfer like that, with the chair directly infront off the toilet, because right now I need people to help me with that and I don't feel comfortable with that. Hi, i cant really suggest an article as such as i havent come across any. A lot of it is trial and error, and depends upon your particular bowel. What about your rehab centre? They should give you all the advice you need. I'd suggest joining one of the Facebook groups as there's loads of great advice in there. Try SCI Owners Club as a start and see how you go. My nose has gotten really sensitive. I can usually smell when it is time to have a bowel movement. It is usually after I eat something. I have a bowel movement about once or twice a day. Sometimes I may go a couple days without it. Water helps keep me regular. After lunch I have a sleeve of M&M's and a glass of water with them. Seems like I go every time after having that combo. I kind of know when I am due for a bowel movement. Weird, but my gas does not stink unless there is something about to poke cotton. I use what the Doctor calls 'digital stimulation.' I just glove up, lube up, and check if there is anything there. I am T7-T8 but can actually push it out a little. I glove up to know if there is something there and to help it out. When I was first injured, I tried suppositories and enemas. Absolutely hated them. they would do the trick most of the time but would usually have a discharge later on that would be devastating to where I didn't want to go out in public. I haven't used anything in 2-3 years and only been constipated maybe twice and they were my fault for over eating and not drinking enough water.
      As for bladder, for about a year after my injury I had a lot of bladder spasms and I could only hold maybe 200cc. Oxybutynin did not hep me. It seem to make it worse. Now I take nothing and no surgery and I just wear underwear around the house. I might have an accident once every few months. Mostly because of my fault I waited too long or drank something that irritates my bladder like soda or citrus drinks. I shoot for self cathing every 4hrs, but I can go 5-6hrs sometimes. My legs will usually tell me when it is time to go. My left of foot will move. Sometimes it is gas or a bowel movement that makes them move. Another odd thing, if I take a nap in the afternoon, or sleep in past 8-9am, my body will drain fluids and I will have a lot of urine in just a few hours. Sometimes my armpits will sweat if I need to pee. I know someone else that their armpit will sweat and their left nipple gets hard. Listen to your body and see how it is communicating to you now that the spinal cord is damaged.
      As I write this post, it has been 4hr and 15m since I last peed and my foot/leg is telling me to get in there. Hope this helps anyone that reads it. Life is a lot more enjoyable when you can get control of your bowl and bladder.

      Life on Wheels I respect your answer. Your simply showing the world how you transfer and thats awesome. If your a recent paraplegic this method would not be ideal. You can assist with a transfer board or the use of rails. It takes time, therapy and all that good stuff. Im just putting this info out there as an FYI.

    • @sam-lifeonwheels9861
      @sam-lifeonwheels9861  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I filmed this video when I was less than 7 months into being a paraplegic, so would consider that as being fairly recent?! I appreciate everyone has different abilities, but my videos are all about showing others what can be done, and how to do it. I never relied upon bars, and it has greatly improved my ability because I've forced myself to do things the slightly harder way. It also means that when I travel I can use a fairly normal bathroom as long as I can physically get the wheelchair in.

    • @paraplegicmom5318
      @paraplegicmom5318 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Life on Wheels I myself am a T4 incomplete, have been for 4 years. It does take me a bit more effort to transfer because I am slightly over weight. Looking forward to trying your method aswell. I recently began to wake up with my arms being numb and fingers swollen. Has this ever happened to you? Im glad we have this platform to share and learn from each other.

    • @sam-lifeonwheels9861
      @sam-lifeonwheels9861  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah we're fairly similar in terms of injury level then. How 'incomplete' are you ig you dont mind me asking? Hmmm I've not woken up with numb arms before, apart from where they've been above my head in the night haha! My left arm occasionally goes tingly during hard exercise on my handbike but I think that's just through hard work. Might be worth asking a specialist in case it's something underlying?
