It may work out,but the Arkansas fans are not getting the 49 year old Cal who was ready to be the big boy on the block. Arkansas fans are getting a 65 year old Coach who got lazy at Kentucky and also wasn’t getting multiple five star difference makers like he did in his first seven years at UK.
Sounds like sour grapes Kentucky is bringing in too much Pope who failed to win a regular-season or conference tournament championship during his nine seasons as a head coach. His teams also suffered upset losses in the first round of the NCAA tournament, losing as a 6-seed facing an 11-seed both times.
I agree with Jeff this time. Cal knows what Adieu. and big Z and DJ (if he comes)can do and it brings in a little continuity. It will be fun to watch how this team can come together and gel. This is a different roster.

Field of 68 always has something to say about Cal. Arkansas didn’t make the tournament last year with a transfer heavy, older player roster. I’m still waiting on the team of 5 portal guys to win the Final Four. Let Cal cook….
Everybody mentions Cal, Arkansas, Pope, Kentucky, etc. It's what drives clicks. Other programs are building rosters and making changes but they don't have the following.
Yeah people are not realizing the portal is for finding one piece to fill a roster hole, not for building the whole roster. And honestly you probably better be filling a depth need on the bench and not a starting role. Even teams that portal right like Kansas you can see how far Hunter Dickinson got them after all the hype and a million bucks. All these 30 year old dudes with families in the portal are there for a reason it's because they've never won anything and aren't good enough to go lose in the NBA.
Cal hasn’t cooked in 5 years or more. The 2009 Calipari is long gone and is not coming back. He is a shell of himself and has brought a terrible coaching staff with him to Arkansas. He should have retired instead of taking the demotion in Fayetteville
@seanjone4574 People act like there's some coach who hasn't had a 5 year slump. Williams, Self, K, all of them have, and all of them went on to win more titles because their schools didn't panic and dump them. And they had those slumps for no reason unlike Cal where the ncaa literally changed eligibility to intentionally counter his recruiting strategy.
Kentucky fans used to be known nationally as smart fans playing the long game across generations. Now when national analysts and media think of us all they think is 98% of us are dumb entitled babies who can be trolled into running their coach off and tanking their own program. And when Mark Pope doesn't win a title or make a final four in his first few seasons they'll do it to you again, god forbid he keep up his average and continue losing in the first round, they might see if they can troll you into committing some crimes this time around. You're a puppet on their strings I don't blame them.
I agree with Jeff. Having some continuity with older players who’ve already played for Cal will help this team. Hopefully Cal isn’t done adding some older portal players that aren’t from Kentucky as well.

And I did see a lot of great teams ball thru Lexington under Cal’s reign… he did get lazy the passed several years, but he’s got a new lease on life (coaching) and he does have a Hall of Fame reputation to win back. Bringing in UK players is the best idea. They are the best players every year. The problem is in the Cal, Payne, Coleman. They have 1 guy on roster better than last year and that's Aidoo. Admittedly, Biz Z is the only player I wanted bad. He will be significantly better this year. But people gotta quit acting like Johnell Davis is anywhere near as good as Antonio Reeves. Then they use the "go get us one" argument is as lazy as the coach himself. Cal had 3 guys who were like that, boogie would've been cool had Rob Dillingham not proved everyone wrong.

You guys are barking up a BAD tree. Arkansas had no team left. Lots of schools were burning up the portal and signing lots of good players. You've got to scramble to not just rebuild but to build a team from scratch. Seems like a smart move to build a team as quickly as you can with QUALITY, highly sought transfers. I can't believe anyone would consider it's a mistake to go after players you've coached and/or stayed in contact with OR even already signed when he was at Kentucky. The research and evaluation was done. Why start over while time is short.

This team is super talented but the only spot he upgraded was the Center spot compared to last year you could argue Nelly Davis is better than Antonio and I’d probably pick Nelly over him but not by much but the guards are not even close DJ and Boogie are both good but neither are Rob or Reed I think Billy and Adou will be a really good tandem with great defense and driving wings problem is idk if he will figure out his rotation
Big Z has the talent but he was under used by cal and he still has a long way to go as far as speed and consistency goes. Aidoo was also under used and probably could have guarded that 3 point shooter to win against oakand. But he was too busy playing his golden boy point guard who wouldn't shoot the ball. Not the first time he didn't play a key player who could have guarded the other team. Remember the time he said he "forgot" bringing back in Nick Richards in 2017 and lost by a bucket when the other team made an inside shot? IMO he brought them in so he didn't have to feel as bad about job shopping during the NCCA tourney.

They won’t run plays defense will be terrible , they won’t be able to adjust to well coached teams that are prepared for dribble drive dis organized offense.
I think the defense will be better, because it can't get much worse. But the offense will be the old stagnant dribble drive. Arkansas will likely win every home game because it's a tough place to play with a rejuvenated fanbase, but struggle on the road because it's still Cal, who most fanbases hate, and a talented Arkansas team.
Um wagner was the worst distributor in kys back court last year,and shooter. That's what ruined the whole thing him and Edwards being played over far better players. It worked out well though 🎉

I'm sure he's going to try to get a few more veterans. How anyone can argue that no one has done less with more than Cal did at Ky. is beyond me.I mean, he's got 26 really good if not dominant players in the league right now. Out of all the number one and number two recruiting classes, he's only got 1 championship in 2012. Maybe Cal will be rejuvenated, but I doubt it. Calipari can recruit better than anybody, but he is an average coach. Even Seth Greensburg, who is a good friend of Cal's. said he is not the same coach that he once was. He definitely thought he was bigger than Kentucky basketball but he was wrong. its going to be a great rivalry now and fun to watch.i guess we will find out who got the better coach in about 5 months.

Arkansas believing that they were ever going to get 2009 John Calipari is laughable. He doesn’t care about Arkansas it’s just a place to recruit players for the NBA at.
Cal`s offence has been very bad for about five years, until last year. This was because he brought in an offensive guy whos name escapes me, but is at Fresno state I believe, or Long Beach State. It will be VERY interesting if he goes back to his usual floppy action, and dribble drive. His inability to adjust defensively is a huge flaw of his as well and cost UK at least one Title verse UCONN by refusing to go zone a little. You cant teach an old dog new tricks, and I think he will be very competitive at Arky but hes not winning any titles there. He had lightning in a bottle for about eight years at UK and came away with ONE! 50 pros and ONE phreaking title... ARKY fans Anthony Davis is not walking through your door!

Yes, Cal is going to have to adjust to having seasoned players because they will outnumber the freshmen class coming in. This is the perfect time to begin to change the one and done system. But the one and done system is an NBA enabled problem. Do you know a 3 to 5 star basketball player that wants to stay in college and get a degree anymore? The NIL diminishes the rapid departure of freshmen but it too is getting out of control. The true measure of Coach Cal’s change will be is 2nd year at Arkansas!

He said that he wasn't coaching for championships, or the university now. Now he's coaching to put these kids into the NBA.

Bringing in his Kentucky guys isnt a problem. It's the AAU grab the best players available approach to roster building. So now assuming Wagner's coming as well, he's got 3 ball dominant point guard that expect to not only start but be the quarterback. And a bunch of tweener 6'6" guys who are athletic and look good in those highlight vids that edit out all the clanked threes, but not great basketball players.

You couldn't be more wrong. Most Kentucky fans aren't wishing bad on Arkansas as a program. You're not Duke or Louisville. Its not like we hate you guys. And our heads aren't gonna explode if it happens. Its the fact that we KNOW this guy, and you guys don't. So we know exactly what you're getting.........and we're critical that hes going to do the exact same shit to your program. If Cal happened to go far with you guys, great. I'd take an Arkansas title over UNC, Duke, or UConn any day. But the odds of that happening for you......lets be honest, is pretty damn low. You will get super excited at the start of the season when you look at your roster, only to have it come crashing down every year. And every year, he will tell you the same thing, "Our guys are a young team. I love these guys, etc." We know the drill man. Hes using your school as his next NBA camp, nothing more. You guys are gonna pay him the big bucks, while you're left holding the bag.

The real drill with Calipari is he drug UK kicking and screaming to final four after final four, with good players and with weak players, all while fans were losing their minds yelling about how they wanted him and all his players gone. And now they sit and act like Calipari's tenure was some lost era of Kentucky basketball darkness and sorrow even though he hung four banners.
No offense to your program but he almost matched your entire program history in just 15 years you know? But it's not good enough to keep the billybobs from pretending he had 15 first round exits.
I'll let you in on an insider secret, Kentucky is a deeply red state and a few years ago his players approached him and wanted to take a knee for an anthem one time out of solidarity for victims of police violence. Cal acted like a man and let his players do what they needed to do, and took a knee with them to shield them from criticism. Kentucky people hated him for that and never let it go, if you see a Kentucky fan saying irrational negative things about Cal the knee is almost always the only thing they're thinking about.
What is it about Calipari that he attracts all these crazy narratives? Like 14 years of people swearing he was going back to the NBA. 3-4 years of "freshmen can never win the title" and then 10 years of "freshmen should win every title," now back to "you can never win with freshmen." He even had Kentucky fans yelling at people online about how Kentucky is a football school, hilarious how much people hate this guy and will just say the opposite for the sake of opposing him. Does anyone outside of Kentucky think "football" when I say UK to you?
You gotta ask yourself, why is your knock on him for years the fact that he doesn't keep players long enough, and now the knock on him is that he's keeping too many players? Do you actually think it's bad for him to keep a team for multiple years or are you just not a fan of his?
Cal is not liked by many because he's left programs with ncaa violations. He's swaggy and confident, which not everyone likes, and he was getting the best players for one year before turning pro, which ppl said was ruining college basketball. Then other programs adopted it and that became a non-factor. You love him if he's one of your own but hate him if not. It's just the way it goes. He's also been outspoken and somewhat confrontational. He marches to the beat of his own drum. When at UK, he had some post game pressers that didn't put him in a good light and he was on an island, not participating in UK athletic socials to benefit other programs. He wanted to be THE GUY and his team be THE TEAM, which is where the football thing stems from. We finally had football success, relative to past years, and the joke was that we're now a football school. He, Stoops, and Barnhart had some friction for awhile, with the latter 2 siding with each other. I thank Cal for what he's done for the program. He got us out of a dark spot and made us the most relevant program. It was fun, but at the same time the success wasn't matching up with what we wanted and what he was hired for. A first round exit was met with, "yeah, but now you guys can watch former players participate in the NBA allstar weekend" lol. We didn't care about that. We don't have professional teams here, we have UK, Louisville, etc and we care more about that than anything else, and he acknowledged he knew this when having his first press conference upon being hired, but got away from it. He claims he's ended generational poverty by putting these kids in the league, but truth is they would've likely went pro at any other big school offering them a scholarship. I would argue he's hurt some players overall success by not having them stay another year or 2 for development. In summary, he will always be hated because he comes off too much like a salesman. Not all salesman are bad, but when you have his silver tongue and personality it just taps into human nature and wanting to see ppl fall from grace due to some inferiority.
@hdnw7537 He didn't leave any program with violations, he was hired by schools that were dirty before him and after him and smartly left before they could pin their history of cheating on him.
He didn't want to be the only program on campus, he asked for help because his practice facility roof leaked in the rain and everyone started screaming football school at him. The fact is our facilities have fallen very far behind other programs and are not gold standard, he went somewhere that was going to pony up and not settle for garbage standard. Mark Pope loved Kentucky enough to settle and in the long run it will be his downfall and hurt our program for a long time to come.
Guys would have gone pro anyway, sure maybe, we've seen that not play out for 5 stars that go elsewhere but let's say they all would have gotten drafted without Cal. The NBA still knows Cal turns out high quality players on and off court and drafts his guys higher than they would have been, and his guys almost all stick in the league and make it to second contracts. There's no other coach who can get anywhere near him on that, it's why players choose him. Even players he screwed over a little like Thiero still knows where his best shot is.
You've got your facts all screwed around man I think you're buying media narratives and not paying attention to reality. You're just saying all the stuff KSR says which is the one outlet in America that has the biggest grudge against Cal for not leaking info to them.

Well here it is, Cal will have a roster at Arkansas that will be talented, yeah, as it stands it looks like his roster at Kentucky last year was even more stacked. And we seen how that went. So there is that, and dont get me wrong Cal will have Arkansas competing, but when the games matter against the better teams Cal will choke out. He always does.

The only reason Kentucky won 23 games last year was they had the best player in the country in Reed Shepherd, he'll win 19 or 20 games and lose in the first round of the tourneys. He had an all star team last year and managed to screw that up, theres no way he does anything with what hes got now. Hes 65 years old and will only be cosching for another 2 or 3 years, I expect him to have 2 bad seasons then retire

This is 100% an impartial opinion. Just looking at the numbers….on paper Arkansas is going to have a worse version of last year’s Kentucky team, period. Could Wagner and thierro surprise people and become good shooters all of a sudden, maybe. Are the incoming freshman for Arkansas going to be as good as Shepherd and Dillingham, no way. The transfer from Tennessee isn’t as skilled as Mitchell was last year for Kentucky but is better defensively I’d say. The only saving grace for Arkansas is Davis , the transfer from FAU and maybe a freshman that surprises people.
