Leonard Cohen himself would appreciate this, the most perfect rendition of Famous Blue Raincoat I’ve ever heard/witnessed. There’s singing a song and there’s ‘getting’ a song. Sammy gets it.
He seems like a sad soul. All the greatest artists/writers/poets/actors are. They see the world in a different way. A beautifully melancholy way. And use it to create magic.

Famous Blue Raincoat" It's four in the morning, the end of December I'm writing you now just to see if you're better New York is cold, but I like where I'm living There's music on Clinton Street all through the evening. I hear that you're building your little house deep in the desert You're living for nothing now, I hope you're keeping some kind of record. Yes, and Jane came by with a lock of your hair She said that you gave it to her That night that you planned to go clear Did you ever go clear? Ah, the last time we saw you you looked so much older Your famous blue raincoat was torn at the shoulder You'd been to the station to meet every train And you came home without Lili Marlene And you treated my woman to a flake of your life And when she came back she was nobody's wife. Well I see you there with the rose in your teeth One more thin gypsy thief Well I see Jane's awake -- She sends her regards. And what can I tell you my brother, my killer What can I possibly say? I guess that I miss you, I guess I forgive you I'm glad you stood in my way. If you ever come by here, for Jane or for me Your enemy is sleeping, and his woman is free. Yes, and thanks, for the trouble you took from her eyes I thought it was there for good so I never tried. And Jane came by with a lock of your hair She said that you gave it to her That night that you planned to go clear -- Sincerely, L. Cohen
I'm a fan of Cohen but this song never meant much to me until I heard you sing it. Then I sampled other versions and I just came back to how perfect yours is. Minimalist, melancholy, and quiet, alone in your room, leaning over your guitar like someone leaning over a letter they were writing. Just perfect.
I, too, am a fan of the Cohen. A deep fan. I listen to his singing of this one and others every now and then. And covers every now and then. And now this by Sammy Copley. Good heavens. Effortlessly she channels Cohen and, yet, finds a tenderness to the disappointment. Stunning.
With every subsequent viewing I am more and more convinced that this is the most perfect expression of this song ever. Sammy’s voice, inflections, expressions, eyes, all of it is just sublime.
How many moments of comfort and joy have your charming, delightful, endearing great-sounding videos given to people all over the world? I don’t know the answer, but it’s a really big number. I don’t think it’s in your nature to be full of yourself (how do I know that?…I suppose I don’t, but I’m sure of it anyway)…but you’ve sure earned the right to be proud of yourself!
I'm no expert in music but I'm an expert in what I feel be it mistaken or not. I feel that you FEEL the song and lyrics. Not reciting but feeling. Greetings from Italy.
This is genuinely so good Sammy ❤️ Cohen is my favourite musician/artist, so I'm chuffed you're doing more of him. You've even got his picking technique down to a tee. Again, you're amazing, well done👏👏👏
This is by far the most beautiful cover of this most beautiful song. Also, exemplifies Cohen's ability to use the simplest language to describe the most complex of situations.
Wow. Just wow. Your voice just gets more angelic every video. You’ve really helped me through some stuff, and I truly thank you for that. Keep doing what you do Sammy. Never stop.
you, your music, and your channel have come on sm since I last checked you out!! Well deserved man your voice is class ahhhh onwards and upwards fack yea big ups
I discovered your channel a few weeks ago and it’s been on repeat ever since....you have a beautiful voice that always makes me an emotional mess dude honestly. loved this song
It's good to know that so many people demand high-quality music content. And how many people get to know these artists (like Leonard Cohen) thanks to your videos. You are an outstanding figure of your generation, be proud of yourself Sammy because what you do is unique!
Just discovered you and lost count off how many times I've come back to listen and watch. Singing a song well is important of course but expressing one is an art you have mastered. I marvel watching your mannerisms, inflections and expressions. You sing this with a misery that shouldn't be able to be reached by someone your age. I'm amazed! My all time favorite singer of this song is Eivor and you give her some stiff competition ! Well done!
I found you yesterday. You have an extremely beautiful and expressive voice and your originals are stunning. So well written. I loved this. I would love to hear you sing 'Suzanne' Thank you
wow, fantastic voice, you are indeed an old soul as some other comments have said, the emotion in your voice and expressions are perfect for this song.
your voice, song, and the way you play guitar make me feel warm and alive in the dead of winter. such sad lyrics, the heartache is tangible. I hope you only are feeling a fraction of it sammy. beautiful new video.
Wow! You sang Cohens poetry as it should be sung and you helped the listeners understand the poem. Leonard Cohen is a Canadian icon and you did him proud.
I love your work! It seems like I can really hear the words, meaning of the song. It's a deep, emotional, profound, therapeutical experience, thank you, always 👏👏👏
I listen to music daily, all sort of, and months have passed since the last time music gave me goosebumps, maybe years. This video just played randomly in my headphones while I was working and listening to youtube tonight, and at some point my back literally shaked. It felt like awakening. Thank you.
The simple and friendly background of the video and your expressions make your covers more than just a "cover".... Thank you for another blessing for my ears
I shared another of your videos on my Facebook page the other day saying how I saw the same honesty in your artistry as I saw in Leonard Cohen's. I feel validated now.
what an old soul Sammy must have. i'm 66yr old hippie and nothing makes me happier than to see a new generation with great musical taste . thank you for putting a smile on my face
I remember I found your channel exactly a year ago. Your channel has grown and you have advanced so much in doing music! You have also inspired me to do my own music channel one day. Just wanted to say that I love your music
The most emotive performance of this song I’ve ever witnessed. It’s like watching the most perfect impression of this song that there ever was. Thank you, Sammy Copley.
A ha yeb and I agree with you entirely and hello Patti Austin. In order to give this song justice then it has to come from the heart and Sammy nails it beautifully. Pure raw emotion and not many can pull it off.

The disarming intimacy and achingly beautiful rendition of this song is...heartbreaking.

I thought no version could ever give me the goosebumps Leonard's does. And then I found this.
if Cohen could listen to this he would say that he wrote a really beautiful song
Congratulations 🖤
Beautiful cover, gorgeous swells from the guitar and singing too.
