This performance occurred in Oslo Norway in 2017 as part of a concert honouring the music and memory of Leonard Cohen. 23 artists performed his music which was broadcast only on Norwegian television. Norwegians have always had a strong affinity for his music and this directly influenced Aurora’s early musical development as her parents would constantly listen to Cohen as well as other folk artists such as Bob Dylan. While I don’t know whether any of these artists were paid to perform, I am sure that only respected artists were asked and/or offered to perform and every artist, especially Aurora, would have done so without hesitation. I have not seen the other performances but I believe they would have shown the utmost respect to each song, inspired by the emotions and personal memories that he brought to each of their musical lives. For Aurora, Cohen had been one of her biggest influences and we are fortunate to see such an amazing performance, even at a young age, that also comes from a genuine place of immense respect and sadness for his passing. I believe he would have approved.
I'm sorry, I will be the one to swim against the flow. That was not one moment of quality in that cover, maybe she should stick to cutting her own hair, and working out that twitchiness
You are so right. She really exhibits and amplifies the heartwrenching story and emotions and still the gentle soul of mister Cohen here. She is a true master of storytelling. She makes you feel like watching a movie classic, when she performs
You ought to look into her own music! She cites Cohen _all the time_ as her earliest and biggest muse. She even lifted a lyric from Suzanne for her own song Exist for Love....as an homage to Cohen. The Aurora rabbit hole is deep, so may I suggest 2 excellent starting points: Lucky live @ Nidarosdomen and It Happened Quiet live @ The Current. Lucky is a deeply somber yet uplifting song inspired by the Paulo Coelho book Veronika Decides to Die, which is Aurora's favorite book of all time...having read it 5 times. And...It Happened Quiet is an excellent example of her storytelling and lyrical prowess. As a Cohen fan, you should enjoy it. :) Much like Cohen....Aurora is a VERY introverted person, intrigued by darkness, but always aching and yearning for the light and the hope. And like Cohen, she's ridiculously emotionally intelligent...wise even. I hope you enjoy the journey! If you watch those 2 videos....honestly the best thing to do then is simply watch her entire Live at Nidarosdomen concert. It is....stunning. Life changing even. I won't spoil it. Just treat yourself and watch it....and 1 hour later, you'll be a different human being.
It's a shame Leonard did not hear this. Such a tough song needing emotion in every word. AURORA takes it to places the song hasn't been before. She is simply astonishing. We are LUCKY to be here to hear her.
Aurora said in an interview that she grew up listening to three artists and he was one of them. You can tell this version comes from the depths of her heart.
What a very unique interpretation. The soft and powerful style of Aurora was meant to push great songs to their absolute critical mass. I can't believe I missed listening to this until four months later. Such a musical treasure, mined from the purest ore by a virtuoso performer who is not yet 22? I am stunned. Thanks Leonard, FBRC has always been one of my melancholy favorites. And thank you, Aurora, for giving it life even Mr. Cohen could have never anticipated.
Like Cohen....Aurora is a very introverted person, intrigued by darkness, but always aching and yearning for the light and the hope. Also like Cohen, she's ridiculously emotionally intelligent...wise even. As much a philosopher as she is an artist. And she's no mere casual Cohen fan. Aurora cites him constantly in interviews....as her #1 muse and inspiration. It's no wonder she chose to cover a song of his. Tho I personally would love a cover of Suzanne. Maybe one day.
Immer wieder fantastisch wie Aurora es schafft mich alten, weißen Mann zum Heulen zu bringen. Ich liebe sie. Wenn sie ein Lied covert, wird es ihr Lied!
She puts more of herself into her work than anyone I have ever seen. With this song she left me speechless and nearly in tears, it was just so beautiful.
Have you watched/heard her live performance at The Current of her own song It Happened Quiet? Or Lucky from her Nidarosdomen concert? If not.....do yourself a favor and check them out. Because they're two examples where she 100% loses herself in the music and story. Especially in It Happened Quiet...her entire body is entirely beholden to the song. She's in a different dimension...channeling creativity from some cosmic force. It's captivating to watch.
That was indeed a gorgeous interpretation and performance of Cohen's heart-wrenching song. However, I think you might also enjoy Damien's cover from his performance at the "The Tower of Song" memorial for Leonard Cohen. It's a marvelous and powerful cover.
While Zeppelin was gaining traction, Leonard Cohen blessed us with beautiful Folk/Rock, music another gift from OUR neighbors to the North, Quebec, Canada, Merci!
After watching Aurora perform this song you can really truly tell that Leonard Cohen influenced her writing and performances. She may not have his gruffness and gravel in her voice like he does. But, she knows how to make you feel the way he can make you feel and she caries a since of wisdom just like him. There is something that he doesn't have as much of and that is a since of playfulness and a since of whimsy.
He's one of the 3 artists she listens to, she doesn't listen to music as a rule as it is "noise", but she loves him and Enya, and someone else I can't recall.
@@showardnutrition As Chris above me said...Bob Dylan. But she also loves and constantly mentions French metal band Gojira. And Tool...and A Perfect Circle...and Cocteau Twins...and Chemical Brothers...and The Prodigy...and Underworld...and Hans Zimmer...and my point is, when she says she "doesn't like/listen to music" I think she's half joking. She does have a _very_ dry ironic sense of humor. But she's clearly half serious as well. I think she just loves silence....because, in a very real sense, silence is the fertile soil of all creativity.
People who have gone through a very painful breakup have often first experienced a great and true love. This is rare. It’s a happiness that ended in sorrow. And this song is given to them as solace. Thanks to Leonard Cohen, Aurora, and other singers who pass it on to future generations.
I must admit that I hardly know Leonard Cohen, and this is the very first time I listen to this song, but in the end, when Aurora sings in this amazing way, from my eyes always flow tears.
I feel like all of Leonard Cohen's songs should end "Sincerely, L. Cohen." Every word he writes feels like it's been ripped from the depths of his soul. Yet, at the same time, his words are somehow much more powerfully delivered to us through the voices of the many artists who cover his music. Few have captured Cohen's magic as beautifully as Aurora (Jeff Buckley is, of course, the standard bearer for Cohen covers, but she certainly comes close). What an amazing cover artist she is, spanning such a diverse range of genres and musical styles. She makes these songs so uniquely her own.
One of my favorites by Leonard, this is such a piece of art and beauty. Sung with soul, Leonard would have loved it xxoo Love her rendition of Life on Mars. What an old soul
Wow! What a pro performance! That’s the first time that I have seen her perform without at least one member of her regular band. She nailed it! They all nailed it! Obviously she’s big in Norway but I wish that she was much more well known here in Australia. A lot of people are really missing out!
So share and tell your world! I have just discovered her and am furious with anyone in my circle that knew her and didn't share! Aurora deserves the world and the world needs Aurora!
Stacey Howard - Hi Stacey if you haven’t seen much of her I’d start with her Nidarosdomen (Nidaros Cathedral) performance in Trondheim 2017. Her performance and the setting is stunning. It’s about an hour long. Put on captions so that you can understand her introduction (spoken in Norwegian)
@@graemesandstrom5654 Unfortunately you guys scared her away with your frightening bird boys and overly confident bats. I'm hoping you got the inside joke. Otherwise I just made absolutely zero sense to you lol.

Love this cover (of course also a original). Aurora is as usual amazing and she has this magnitude and expressions that make you sink into the music completely.
I came back to this cover again this morning, more as a dedicated fan of Aurora, than Mr. Cohen, but please do not mistake me; all respect and admiration to him. But Aurora is such a gifted vocal artist. I am eternally captivated by the way she falls into a sort of hypnotic state in every song she performs, whether it is one of her own compositions, or a cover of another's work. The spell breaks for only moments between songs, and then she falls, yet again, into the dreamworld she creates for us with her amazing voice as she plays her games with tone, pitch, cadence, rhythm, and more. This performance in particulr; every time I listen to it, I begin to cry around two thirds of the way through it. Wonderful tears.
