  • Today Jim has three draft horse breeds plowing together! We have Ken (Percheron), Bill (Belgain), and Baron (Suffolk Punch). There is lots of fieldwork to be done in the spring!
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horse farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

Jim and the horses did a fine job plowing. If I remember correctly, last year’s plowing was so much harder. I love watching Skip, he's such a risk taker with so much confidence in himself. He's got such a great life!

Hi Jim and Brenda, It's really great to see the 3 different Draft Horse Breeds Percheron Ken , Belgian Bill and Suffolk Punch Baron &/or Earl represented in the 3 horse hitch on the White 3 furrow plow it works really well. Thank You for taking us along with you plowing . It's really wonderful field training for young horses like Duke and Earl and of course last growing season with Baron as well,

I love seeing how beautifully the soil rolls over as it's plowed !! That White 3 furrow plow sure does a great job. Your little dog Skippy, must sleep soundly at night with all the running he does to keep up with the horses during the day !! I take it, it doesn't bother the horses as he runs alongside them......? It's amazing how much water there is still in the field !! You must have had a very wet rainy season this year !! Have a great week, Jim and Brenda !! Still love your channel !!

When striking open a field aim for a tree or fence post or stick . That 1st furrow is most important , because all others build off of it. Modern tractors have G P S technology. But Jim doesn't need that for his small cultivations .😊😊😊

Looks like nice straight furrows to me, Jim! Watching how the plow slices through that sod is so pretty. I'd say you and the boys were worn out after plowing all day. Will this be your field corn or something else? Hey Brenda, you and Abby did a great job cleaning out the flowerbed yesterday. Loved how you used the flat rocks to design the border! I just noticed this morning my iris are now blowing, so won't be long before Abby's will be in bloom!

I know this must seem tedious at times, but I think of times, doing construction when we were nailing off a floor,or roof sheathing, or nailing up shingles. There are lots of jobs that just require steady, slow effort. Some people just couldn't do it. I loved those times. It was nice to have a break from the faster paced stuff, and I used to love just seeing the work dissolve away under my hands. Very satisfying. And of course, you're striving for quality and speed all the while, so that keeps it interesting, too. I t hink when you get to heaven you'll find that God is very pleased and satisfied with your kind of work. I'm sure you sense that already.

Hi Jim, your plow furrel looks 🍒 good, I would be very pleased with those results. Plow is cutting nice. The only thing I could think of doing to get better drainage and tile performance is to bed or wrap the tile with some of your sand from your sand pit, which would require to open the trench , then put in some sand, put the tile down and then put some sand on top and cover it up with the clay ladden soil. This obviously would be a lot more work but you may do a section in the worst part of one of your fields with your excavator and compare the results to the dozer, I think the clay around the tile seals it up and to get drainage though clay is very limited in spots. I agree with what you said and hope for drainage channels to form but the worst spots will have more water, but overall the tile doing a good job, in clay your limited. Hope that makes sense. With every pass the dozer trench goes away, should lay down nice after discing. Be careful moving those big boulders, the dozer brought up some dandies. Looking good, the 3 horses seem to pull that single like nothing. Smoooth. Thank you Brenda.

Hi Jim, as our weather patterns seem to be similar (for me other side of the Vermont border in Canada), I am sure you might have some time to answer other questions. I am planning on hitching two different sized horses. Some one told me the tallest one should always be on the left to not block the view of the right one, is this true? In my case the tallest one is the calmer, reacts better to the environnement but is also the first one to move when asked a command (for now, she has almost a year of experience vs. the other one that is at her second hitch). We are not planning to try and hitch them up as a team right away or without any professional help. Thank you! My name is Isabelle if you prefer not giving out my channel name.

    Good Days Jim..
I'm concerned there's no back rests on seat on plow or like equipment for safety, if the horses ever bolted fast a person could go over backwards and injure themselves or worse. I seen many horses bolt once awhile in videos no matter how well trained they are. Ur horses ares very well trained, although it only takes one time, and or some new amateur, and after alls they are a animal with simple animal instincts mostly only.
    I enjoy the videos.

Good morning Brenda and Jim. A question, if I may? If you are only making one drill, why are you using three horses? Is it for speed...the boys do seem to be moving pretty lively. Shucks about the underground drainage system. I hope it gets performing properly soon ...it was a big project- I recall you having to fill in the drains ...which I found unacceptable. Best of luck with the sowing season...wishing you fair weather. ☘️
