    Finding out about her dead daughter really makes her decision to go back and save Newt work a lot better, more believably anyway. It gives the motivation some additional humanity.

      I think the only scene from the special edition that should’ve made the theatrical release was the scene showing Ripley’s daughter, as it adds a lot of depth to her character and why she was immediately protective over Newt. I think the other scenes should’ve been left out. The sentry gun scene ruins the false sense of security you have when watching (before the power goes out), and I believe the scene showing how the Alien’s were discovered on LV-426 also ruins the unknown factor of what happened at that compound.

    • @taelee73
      @taelee73 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Agree that the only scene they should have kept was the one with her daughter, it shows her desire to help Newt and also that with no other relatives, Ripley had nothing else to live for.
      It was great to see life on the planet before, it must have cost a bit with sets, scale models etc and these must have been left out quite close to the end, but it gave away the secret of the company and told us the stories of people we didn’t need to know about, we could guess how it all started.

      Exactly.

      @RichieCavsRetrocade 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Also agree the only scene to keep in the original should of been about Ripley's daughter as it makes her attachment to Newt much more powerful. The new scene of Newt's family discovering the ship and her dad getting hugged is cool, but if left in the original film, the audience would have been in on how everything went to hell on the colony already. Leaving it out of the original movie leaves the audience and the soldiers in the same boat, both in suspense on what the hell exactly happened there and finding out pieces along the way. Added to the suspense! Same goes for the added scene with the automated sentry guns. Again a cool scene, but as the guns are blowing away the aliens, the aliens retreat and Ripley says, They're looking for another way in which will take them a while. So now the audience knows that the aliens WILL find that way in. By cutting that scene out of the original, you have the original scene where they think they are all safe in the room, all sealed in, but then as they are tracking the alien movement, the tracking device is reading the aliens outside the door, then inside their room which they say is impossible and leads them to question if Hudson is reading the device correctly. Then they all slowly look up, Hicks pops the ceiling tile and BOOM, there they all are! So again, cutting that sentry gun scene made the original scene wayyy more suspenseful. IMO they were all great cuts (except Ripley's daughter) as they created a lot more suspense in the original version.

      During this period, studios really wanted to avoid 2+ hour films. There weren't a lot of multiplexes like there are today, and having long movies would cut down on the amount of showings for a film in a day, which would cut down profits. So they'd have directors make cuts to get the run times down under 2 hours.

    The video wall was used 4 years later in Total Recall. I remember the scene with Ripley's daughter was included when Aliens aired on CBS in 1988. I wonder if Paul Verhohven saw that version and liked the idea or if James Cameron shared it with him for Total Recall.

    I'm sure my VHS of the Special Edition back in the day claimed 17 mins, but whatever. These deleted scenes are essential in my opinion. I believe the special edition also had the hidden easter egg of an alien squelching sound right at the very end of the credits.

    Cameron dropped the ball removing these scenes, especially the first scene where she finds out about her daughter. I think it was the best character development scene for Ripley, which would define her for the rest of her life. The mother who lost a daughter wasn’t going to leave a scared little girl again without her protection (no matter what). The scene where she tells newt that her daughter is gone just brings so much more human element to her character when she goes back into hell to save that little girl from the alien hive. Ridley wasn’t just a bad ass, but a heart broken mother fighting to protect the closest thing she would ever have to a child of her own again. Changed the whole film for me and even added emotional relevance to the 3rd film. Great writing but terrible final editing in the end

    as much as l love seeing the derelict again, that scene had to be cut... makes so little sense. why would the company just have them send someone out there randomly? what kind of plan is that, after establishing a colony, just send a civilian out to get infected? and remembering how difficult it was for kane to get to the eggs, i cant imagine these two getting there
    furthermore i think that in romulus the facehuggers on the spacestation will have been recovered from the derelict, with the colony being a 'front' for them being out there ... i feel like alvarez will ignore this deleted scene same way cameron ignored the scene with brett and dallas being morphed into eggs...
    if the company wanted to investigate the ship , after what happened in alien, they would go themselves, which i think they will have in romulus
