How Nike SB Dunk Became the Most Coveted Sneaker Model | Behind the HYPE

  • Streetwear's origin story dates back to both California’s surf-skate scene and New York’s hip-hop movement of the ’70s and ’80s. More than just a leisurely sport and music genre, these subcultures influenced people’s everyday lives, from the music they listened to and the art they created, to their hangout spots and how they dressed.
During the ’80s and ’90s, these two worlds proliferated and permeated throughout mainstream popular culture, but rarely mingled together. Then, in 2002, with the release of a single product, they collided to help birth streetwear as we know it today.
This moment can be largely attributed to the launch of Nike‘s skateboarding-centric SB Dunk and the fandom that surrounded its subsequent drops.
Having initially launched as a basketball sneaker in 1985, alongside the Air Jordan 1 and Terminator, the Dunk and its two cohorts had crossover appeal with young skaters like Tony Hawk, Mark Gonzales and Lance Mountain. These budding icons gravitated to these three models for their support, cushioning and traction, as well as their alignment with high-tech performance and superstar athletes.
In the ’90s, the Dunk’s outdated tech soon fell out of general production and into obscurity, however it remained a cult favorite among collectors and skaters. So in 2002, when Nike revived its failing skateboarding division as Nike SB, the team behind this relaunch chose to reimagine the Dunk as its flagship sneaker.
With an upgraded design, limited distribution network, key collaborators and thoughtful storytelling, the SB Dunk appealed to skaters and sneakerheads alike, and soon pairs began flying off the shelves of skate shops around the globe. As these two worlds bonded together over these kicks in both release lines and underground internet forms, a new culture emerged that combined elements of both.
Modern streetwear formed out of this community and into the now billion dollar industry it is today.

These became popular in skateboarding for their relatively slim & simple silhouette. They look bulky now, but compared to skate shoes in the early 2000's they were minimalistic. Probably the last shoe i'd chose to skate nowadays though. The shoe nerds can have em.

@Daisuke Young Compared to other shoes of the early 2000s they were way more refined. That's why I said relatively. Compared to today's shoes, of course everything including the current Dunk has slimmed down a bit.

Nostalgia for what? 2002? You should support skate brands that have been started by skaters. I’ll never understand why someone would choose to wear Nike’s over Emerica’s, Etnies, DC’s, etc. like they have such a cooler aesthetic and a deeper history with the subculture.

Hey hype beasts, can you stop going nuts over dunks. I can no longer find dunks for $80-100 like I could 3-4 years ago, which means I now have to spend $200 plus to skate in even the most basic colourways of the dunk. The quickstrike collabs have always been fire, its honestly one of the reasons I love them so much, but I swear it takes one collab with the likes of travis scott or whoever else to ruin a shoe for good. Makes me really sad. I used to get clowned for wearing retros and dunks when the yeezy 350 was new and poppin and now ppl wont stop bugging me for my de la soul dunks. Stop riding waves and go find your own vibe, Like fuck outta here with your bs😤

If you're late to the party (and at this point, you are) and you're looking to lace yourself and not resell (which I'll assume you're not) I'd recommend checking out goat.com and search 'dunk' or 'sb dunk' and see what you ACTUALLY LIKE. You can also filter by size so you can see what's available that fits your smelly ass footage. You can buy new, used, or defect. If a few pairs catch your eye, search for that pair in your size on OTHER SITES FIRST like ebay, mercari, offer up, grailed, shit even your local Facebook marketplace might give you some steals locally. Even a general search on Google of that dunk might point you to a site that has a solid price on them. I recommend avoiding stockx, they had a security breach recently and I personally had my credit card info peeled as well as TONS of other ppl. That's aside from the fact that their prices are through the fucking roof for even general release dunks. I warned you, Jaymane. Research the price of that specific dunk before you buy, don't overpay for something you can cop for dirt cheap.
I know it's tempting to cop what's hype (like the Off White dunks) or super rare (like the freddy kruegers, Paris', og pigeon) but fuck that. Buy what you like and make sure they ain't some fakes. Follow r/dunksnotdead on reddit, as well as @nikesbornothing , @dunkslut , @sb_freak100, @verse001 etc on instagram for some knowledge and deals on these. Have fun 🤘
