Fun fact: In the books when Crowley and Aziraphale give Anathema (the love of Danny's life) a ride in the car, she feels unsafe until Crowley calls Azirphale "angel", implying that she thinks they're together
I mean they basically are? They never officially got labeled until recently, but they def acted like a couple normally. Sure the angel nickname specifically isn’t an indicator, it’s just literal, but the other stuff? Those are some old gays
The way they’re written…it’s like they literally can’t HELP being deeply in love and tied to one another, no matter the countless years. Definitely one of my favorite couples that I’ve seen in any fictional media in my entire life.
secondary fun fact: in the books she thinks of them as the ‘two consenting bicycle repairmen’ or something similar, which is a direct reference to the phrase ‘two consenting gentlemen’ used to refer to gay men in times past
"She healed people and did witch shit?! Maybe stop?" "OH! She's exacting a sewer slide terrorist bombing at her execution? Girl Boss!" This duality slayed me
Fun fact: when Anathema was picked up by Aziraphale and Crowley, she was worried until Crowley called Aziraphale ‘Angel’. Then she realized they like t h a t. And she wasn’t in any danger at all.
I’m gonna make you love that plant scene even more: 1. Crowley’s acting out the way he was parented on his own plant kids. Screw up one time, you’re doomed to the pit/garbage disposal. Break one rule and you’re literally expelled from the garden. 2. The book (but not the show so I’m not considering this a spoiler) eventually reveals Crowley does not destroy the plants but instead fakes their dramatic deaths then takes them to an old lady in his building who’s really great with nursing plants back to health.
This is going to be so pedantic, but it’s not actually mentioned what he does with the plants in the book. Neil Gaiman tweeted that Crowley turned the shredder on to frighten the plants and then gave them to an old lady downstairs, but this was in response to a parent telling him their seven year daughter was upset by the scene. It does seem in character for Crowley, but it is ultimately a head canon, and I believe Neil Gaiman has specifically said he left it up to the interpretation of the reader. However, while the scene in the show was pretty much taken line for line from the book, there is a notable difference. In the book it doesn’t say that he shreds the plants, or even that the sound of a shredder is heard. It simply says that “he would leave the flat with the offending plant, and return an hour or so later with a large, empty flower pot, which he would leave somewhere conspicuously around the flat.” That seems to be the right amount of time to pop downstairs, have a nice chat and a cup of tea with an old lady and help re-pot a plant. So I’m inclined to go with the idea that Crowley did give the plants to the old lady in his flat, but it is ultimately just a headcanon!

That "other author" was Sir Terry Pratchett. He was England's Hayao Miuazaki, as you so put it. He was the worldbuilder. The turtle moves. I cannot recommend his works enough. Though he is unfortunately no longer with us, Gaiman actually made sure his contributions were prioritized in this first season to honor him. The second season included ideas for a sequel which was never published.
So, the 'other author' was the late Sir Terry Pratchet. Author of the Disc World Books. He was an amazing world builder as well and has the exact vibe you described for Neil Gaiman. The two were very good friends and legend has it, that after Sir Terrys death Neil Gaiman fought for Terrys parts of the story to be included in the show far more, than for his own contributions.
the other dude who wrote good omens with neal gaiman is terry pratchett, who im convinced wrote himself into existence. he was such a prolific writer he got knighted for it. he went out found a fucking meteorite and forged a gods damned sword out of it to be knighted with. look up the disc world novels, movies and such. they are genuinely incredible works and i garan fucking tee youre going to love it. sakka's meteor sword might literally be a terry pratchett reference
Child 3's fate won't be revealed in the show. But in the book it is revealed. He is a random bully kid in Adam's village, he was adopted, he likes tropical fish and wins prices with them
It's alluded to though in the show. God narrates, "it would be nice to think the nuns had the 3rd baby discreetly adopted, that he grew to be a happy and normal child. And perhaps that is what happens. He probably wins prizes for his tropical fish." (The implication there kind of sounding like the nuns may have uhhh...disposed of it but it's nice to think it turned out alright. But of course in the book that hypothetical including the fish is exactly what does happen to the kid.)
For a little bit of context on Agnes. The actual full name of the book is: Good Omens, the nice and accurate prophecies of Agnes Nutter: Witch. And the description on the back of the book is mostly about her book of prophecies.
In an interview, Sir Terry Pratchett said that he wrote about 2/3 of the book, but the way they sent pieces back and forth to each other was through floppy disks in the mail. You know cause it was the '90s ❤ but they were on the phone with each other practically everyday tossing ideas back and forth
It was the 80s. The book came out in 1990. Floppies were a lot bigger and actually floppy then. I would have been a ball of anxiety if I were sending floppies back and forth then
@@dajtoad1 In an interview it was stated that Terry wrote most of Agnes Nutter and the Them while Neil did most of the Four Horsemen stuff, but they did also swap characters a fair bit. In the end they both had written at least some of the final story for every major character. Elizabeth Callaway did a fun style analysis on Good Omens to find out who wrote what and found that, while each had large chunks that were strongly theirs, the influence of both authors truly was present over the entirety of the book. Funnily enough, she tested her program against Terry's novel Moving Pictures and found traces of Neil's style in there, which she thought was just noise... until Neil Gaiman tweeted that he'd actually given Terry input on Moving Pictures, which her program had picked up on.
16:54 "even more characters" is pretty much how sir terry pratchett rolled- his discworld series of books are filled with some of the most vibrant and fun characters i have ever had the pleasure of reading about
Season 1 is based on the book by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, season 3 is based on the unfinished book sequel and season 2 is kinda supposed to tie those two together. fun fact, Neil Gaiman said that if season 3 didn't get greenlit he would have just finished the book and released it like that
As someone who took a Neil Gaiman based English class last semester and wrote a final paper about Good Omens, I appreciate that not only is there educational and written but now video evidence of the obsession this show causes. See guys I’m not the only one who went feral after watching this show😂
The original book has some random prophecies just thrown in between chapters - and what the family believed, they might have meant. These are SO hilarious at times xD
12:15 fun fact: no doubt the sketch was poking fun at the fact because Monty Python is made of highly educated people, but everyone expected the Spanish Inquisition, they sent you a letter 30 days in advance that they were coming
In case you were wondering Danny the other author is Terry Pratchett and he's actually responsible for writing half of the original book so if you like this you'll probably like pratchett's work as well
No. They wrote it 50/50, although their writing overlapped as they read each other’s sections and contributed jokes. Neil can’t even remember clearly which bits were his and which Terry’s. ETA now my comment looks like it makes no sense, as OP has amended their original comment!
God rest the soul sir pTerry Pratchett since 2015. His writing was the wittiest you could ever read. When Good Omens premièred they put his favourite cowboy hat on an empty seat in the front row of the theatre in his honour.
According to Gaiman, he had the idea about the anti-christ being in an idealic English village, but didn't really know what to do with it. So he sent the idea he had to a few friends. Terry Pratchett (who Gaiman greatly respected) got back in touch and said "I think I know what happens next. Do you want to work on it togther?" Gaiman describes the experience as "The closest Im ever going to get to painting a cieling with Michael Angelo." GNU Terry Pratchett, you changed the world of fantasy and you are greatly missed.
Context as you didn't know who Sir Terry was in the video. Pratchett created a fantasy communication system where the code GNU means to keep passing the message up and down the system forever. In the same world it is believed that a man is never truly dead while his name is still spoken, so having your name sent with this code is a form of spiritual immortality. So Sir Terry's fans have made it the default tribute to him.
I've been obsessed with David Tennant since I was a kid and I still love him. He also has a trans kid and when his wife posted a pic of him wearing a shirt that says "protect trans kids", JK Rowling called him a part of the gender taliban and tried to cancel him, but Tennant fans were NOT having it! He got an outpouring of appreciation so strong that he noticed despite not using social media.
@@kiwi_duckling "Non-binary" is a subcategory of the umbrella term "trans", though not all non-binary people identify as trans (particularly agender folks).
I think Danny thought she made the hot cocoa appear. Actually, Danny, she said that because she knew aziraphale would sit down to read the book with a mug of hot cocoa and was basically saying HEY YOU THERE ANGEL I KNOW YOURE READING THIS RIGHT NOW
It's such a fantastic story. Neil Gaiman worked directly with Sir Terry Pratchett to make Good Omens. They used to meet for lunch dates and talk about their ideas for the story together and were very, very close friends. The novel is fantastic and the show sticks quite accurately to the original story, and if you're a reader you should absolutely look into the Discworld novels by Sir Terry Pratchett. They're hilarious, socially aware and very progressive.
I also don't know how much influence Neil Gaiman had as opposed to Sir Terry Pratchett, but I can tell you, Terry was insane at creating weird alternative worlds and stories that would sound bonkers to describe. He wrote around 42 books set in a Discworld (meaning a flat world) that's placed atop four Giant Elephants who stand on an even bigger Giant Turtle called Great A'Tuin. The opening monologue of Good Omens sounds EXACTLY like any normal introduction of a Discworld novel. Idk if you're into reading but SIR TERRY PRATCHETT KNEW HOW TO HAVE A PARTY. RIP King
Here's a question: which movie(s) would you admit is Discworld? Like, obviously we don't talk about The Watch. Going Postal has a good female lead but the golems are odd Hogfather has Alfred and Susan, but Death is a bit of a let down... Etc
Season 1: The original book, plus elements from the unwritten but planned second book (John Hamm's Gabriel, for example) Season 2: All new stuff, following on from the end of Season 1, but not the story that was intended for Book 2. Season 3: As far as we have been told, the story that was originally planned for Book 2. 'Dick Turpin' is a very famous English highwayman.
My gran had it. Gave a copy to my mum too. It's pretty much "how to be a good wife"... It's got loads of recipes for stuff, but also how to organise a dinner party and tips to get different stains out of things. That's why it's "Mrs B's household guide" rather than "Mrs B's recipe book"
I love this show so much. Crowley is my sad boi favorite. When this first came out, people were writing their interpretations on the characters actions. And one of my favorite interpretations is Crowley's open hostility towards his plants and demanding perfection and 'casting out' the ones that are imperfect is his way of coping with him being cast to hell for being an imperfect angel by simply being himself, just like how its natural for plants to have wilty spots. Which broke my heart. And Azeriphel's chaotic book shop is his way of distancing himself from the sterility and strict order of heaven. These characters are so tragic and so amazing and I love them so much and I am so excited for season 3 and can't wait for what they have planned. It will be just absolutely bonkers
Danny is all of us watching good omens for the first time: insta crushes, obsessed with the series, loving Crowley with his plants and Azirapjale whit his books
Danny, the answer to what Terry Pratchett did, and what Neil Gaiman did, this is the only Neil Gaiman I have read, the snappy quick-witted dialog, and all the narration is signature Terry Pratchett
The obsession with good omens is so strong in a person's life that there comes a time when you can't look at anything else without thinking "omg this is so good omens coded"
I forgot we got introduced to the horsemen of the apocalypse in the second episode. I was just thinking how exciting it be to see Danny's reaction to them since they're one of my favorite parts of this show-.

I've done a lot of traveling, I have purposefully devled into content from other cultures to learn, that doesn't mean I know a prominent bandit from every single country I've watched TV from, and I'd be impressed if someone did (someone who watches shows from more than 1-3 countries).
GNU Terry Pratchett
Discworld stuff is off the hook. Just the best.
Forever in the overhead
Terry Pratchett was THE GOAT and Danny called him "some other author" 😭😭
This made me tear up. GNU STP. I cried that day. I think I've only cried for 3 other celebrities: Prince, Bowie, and Rik Mayall.
Well, "legend" as in the actual Neil Gaiman said that on tumblr.
Yeah, the humor and the way characters act is very characteristic of Pratchett's writing, more than Gaiman's!
the other dude who wrote good omens with neal gaiman is terry pratchett, who im convinced wrote himself into existence. he was such a prolific writer he got knighted for it. he went out found a fucking meteorite and forged a gods damned sword out of it to be knighted with. look up the disc world novels, movies and such. they are genuinely incredible works and i garan fucking tee youre going to love it. sakka's meteor sword might literally be a terry pratchett reference
Terry Pratchett, the other author, is my favorite author. He was knighted with a sword he had forged out of a meteorite. He was incredibly cool.
"we got a nose touch" I'm so excited for him to watch s2

Dude this is a genuine spoiler might wanna delete this- (not cause it’s a bad comment just so Danny can be traumatised like the rest of us ;))
I love how you understand that Aziraphale and Crowley could both get it, because they absolutely could.
Danny’s little smile when he watched Crowley magic the paintball splatter off Aziraphales coat was so adorable 😭😭😭 (13:43)
“Absurdism but completely believable” is why I fell in love with terry pratchet
Oh yeah. My thoughts exactly... Like "This is Sir Terry Fucking Pratchett for you".
David Tennant looks so good in the nanny costume
“Another author” do not DISRESPECT sir Terry Pratchett like that
In an interview, Sir Terry Pratchett said that he wrote about 2/3 of the book, but the way they sent pieces back and forth to each other was through floppy disks in the mail. You know cause it was the '90s ❤ but they were on the phone with each other practically everyday tossing ideas back and forth
It was the 80s. The book came out in 1990. Floppies were a lot bigger and actually floppy then. I would have been a ball of anxiety if I were sending floppies back and forth then
“has anyone been obsessed with good omens for the past 24 hours?”
*danny i’ve been obsessed with this show for the past TWO YEARS*

The "Naked Witchcraft" bit was the best bit! You 100% have to make a short of that!
That one was most definitely a Terry Pratchett joke (in fact, I suspect all the Agnes Nutter stuff was his - it followed into his Discworld books)
16:54 "even more characters" is pretty much how sir terry pratchett rolled- his discworld series of books are filled with some of the most vibrant and fun characters i have ever had the pleasure of reading about
"... and another author."
How dare you besmirch the absolute brilliance of the beloved late Sir Terry Pratchett in such a way.
See guys I’m not the only one who went feral after watching this show😂
The second season was the first time I ever cried watching a show
NEED to take that class
"this fandom's tumblr must be fucking feral" oh you have no idea
The original book has some random prophecies just thrown in between chapters - and what the family believed, they might have meant. These are SO hilarious at times xD
12:15 fun fact: no doubt the sketch was poking fun at the fact because Monty Python is made of highly educated people, but everyone expected the Spanish Inquisition, they sent you a letter 30 days in advance that they were coming
In case you were wondering Danny the other author is Terry Pratchett and he's actually responsible for writing half of the original book so if you like this you'll probably like pratchett's work as well
He should look at the movies :D
No. They wrote it 50/50, although their writing overlapped as they read each other’s sections and contributed jokes. Neil can’t even remember clearly which bits were his and which Terry’s.
ETA now my comment looks like it makes no sense, as OP has amended their original comment!
@@dajtoad1 oh thanks I I heard somewhere that Pratchett wrote most of the book My bad
_Good Omens_ the book really leans more towards Pratchett's type of humor, I think.
@@HuntingViolets I think so too, but both of them have a dry wit.

Do you want to work on it togther?"
Gaiman describes the experience as "The closest Im ever going to get to painting a cieling with Michael Angelo."
GNU Terry Pratchett, you changed the world of fantasy and you are greatly missed.
@@SkillsLoading I loved Pratchett and never heard of this! What a beautiful, fitting thought.

Wilfred is nonbinary, not trans. But yeah, David is fucking awesome :D
@@kiwi_duckling "Non-binary" is a subcategory of the umbrella term "trans", though not all non-binary people identify as trans (particularly agender folks).

YES! YES, ALL THE TIME!!
Ha! Low key? Let me just tell you... It all started in 1995 when I found this book...
17:43 She didn't make the drink, she just predicted the future until the Apocalypse
I think Danny thought she made the hot cocoa appear. Actually, Danny, she said that because she knew aziraphale would sit down to read the book with a mug of hot cocoa and was basically saying HEY YOU THERE ANGEL I KNOW YOURE READING THIS RIGHT NOW
"is anybody else like hopelessly in love with this woman?" Yes. All of us.
If you love John Ham hamming it up in this season, you are gonna lose your shit with how fun he is in season 2! Im so excited for you to see it!
Going Postal has a good female lead but the golems are odd
Hogfather has Alfred and Susan, but Death is a bit of a let down... Etc
@@auricstormhave you seen The Colour of Magic?

"This is a REAL BOOK!?" Watching you briefly tangent down that rabbithole brought me so much joy.

Danny, the answer to what Terry Pratchett did, and what Neil Gaiman did, this is the only Neil Gaiman I have read, the snappy quick-witted dialog, and all the narration is signature Terry Pratchett
The obsession with good omens is so strong in a person's life that there comes a time when you can't look at anything else without thinking "omg this is so good omens coded"
I forgot we got introduced to the horsemen of the apocalypse in the second episode. I was just thinking how exciting it be to see Danny's reaction to them since they're one of my favorite parts of this show-.
In the book, the four other horsemen are a hoot.

David Tennant could probably be in an absolutely terrible show or movie and people would still watch and enjoy it because he has such an amazing presence and is such a great actor
Yeah, if you need a palate cleanser after Des, or even Broadchurch, The Decoy Bride is just as predictable and silly as you'd expect from a rom com. You, Me and Him is also not quite terrible.

hey so fun fact about the making of good omens, which was one of the first things I saw about good omens when it was in production and as an older good omens fan (been a fan for ten-ish years now) made me have faith in the show: Terry's hat is in Aziraphale's book shop on a hanger and has been since day one - Neil wrote about the easter egg explaining it was left by a very enthusiastic customer who was fond of the book shop, so fond of it he forgot his hat on the way out. there's also a few discworld novels, of which Neil says Aziraphale really enjoyed reading.
