Hah. Yes we do yes the limits. The test was really really hard on the amp and I’ve done this before. Basically 2/3 of its channels is loaded with 4 ohm loads and continuous pure tones are sent through it at ever higher levels. The thing that killed it was that I turned it off, raises the level more than I intended to because I had to use the receiver volume control, and when I turned the tone generator back on, it was basically hit with a massive signal rapidly. It was too much too quick for the protection circuit and it killed the amp. A very heavy duty amplifier died a similar death a few years back, so it’s really not a knock on the Sony in the slightest.
I also have the STR-AZ5000ES, I really like the sound (without 360SSM). I wish they had a better phone app and they would not assign the S-Center channel to the Height 2 channel. I have a 5.1.4 setup and can’t use the S-center as I don’t want to loose a pair of heights speakers.
Great stuff! I have one and love it. I’m really interested in seeing the follow up to this video when you complete it! Thanks for all the awesome work you guys do.
It’s this kind of discussion and analysis that sets this channel apart from anything else. This is technical, but practical, unlike ASR which seems singularly focused on SINAD only.
@dharins My gf and hear nothing. I'm using 2 Tonewinner 7300+ amps, using monoprice onix series cables, connected to an emotiva cmx6. My speakers are 4ohm rated.
I have a Sony STR-AZ5000ES (since March) and 360SSM is very very noisy. Mine actually blew a fuse after an insanely loud pop. Within a week it had to go back to the Sony authorized repair center for issues with HDMI signal. I am keeping my STR-AZ5000ES but I no longer use the speaker relocation feature, the 360SSM, nor the calibration (front, engineer nor flat). Even without those features, the STR-AZ5000ES is the best sound quality in any previous receiver I have ever owned, for both 2 channel music, or 5.1.4 movies. My speakers are not super expensive, Martin Logan Foundation F2, and to me, the combination of Martin Logan and Sony receiver is impressive.
Hey Mathew...Still waiting for the Follow-up/Proper BENCH TEST that you have mentioned in this video. I would really appreciate if it's like any other Bench tests done in a detailed report just like GENE does.

Sonys other audio products tend to get great reviews. Just not their receivers or entry level speakers (their high end speakers are pretty well regarded)
I own the Sony STR-AZ5000ES and as long as I don’t use 360SSM it is really good for both music and movies. 360SSM on has a very annoying hiss at 0db volume, thus I don’t use it.
I have the STR-DH770 and it’s been great for 7 years. It only cost $300 and has next to no features but has been great no meaningful issues to report. Occasional HDMI handshake issues but that happens with just about anything these days. Oh… the Bluetooth connectivity is a hit or miss. I never use it anymore though, I have no reason too. Probably nothing special, but I was impressed with the lack of hiss on this Sony when I first bought it. My old receiver had a white noise when nothing was playing. It was kind of annoying that you could hear it across the room. The cheap Sony is damn near silent. I would like to upgrade to the AZ3000ES but it lacks features. But wouldn’t hesitate to based on how my cheap one has been.
I own one of these - installed it last week. Being a longstanding Sony AVR customer, I am not unhappy. My only major issues are a lack of HDR10+ support, a rather dim LCD display screen, a dated physical design, no QMS, no QFT, and it runs really hot (resolved that with an AC Infinity Aircom T10 cooler). On the plus side, the receiver sounds amazing, is easy to setup, has a decent app, and can be fully controlled via a web browser. It does have dual subwoofer outputs, but only one subwoofer channel. I use Sony's Centre Lift feature, where the Front TH (top height) speakers are mixed in with the centre channel to make it seem like dialogue is coming from the screen, for those of us that do not use projectors. It works really well, and gives a great balance to all centre channel content, considering my centre speaker is at the bottom of my wall unit.
@@lilflip0325 Not so much louder as it does more balanced. It is like a more even distribution of dialogue across the entire panel, which then provides the illusion of being both louder and clearer at the same time, but really, more balanced all around. That was a 9.2-channel AVR which came with Front Height speakers. Those Front Heights could be assigned to Center Lift, and it worked really well there too.
I have the 7000 and am happy with it, just the 360ssm noise when movie is paused. Mine runs cold. Center lift and 2 center option is great. LCD screen sucks. I can't see much of a difference in hdr formats.

A tip when you are setting it up is the TV table top/wall mount sound option still is used when the TV is in center channel mode. On my setup the wall mount sound setting is better.

What are your thoughts on the STR-AZ5000es/ 7000es vs the X4800H/ 6800H vs RZ70 for an AVR to be used for both music listening and movie watching into high-end 4 ohm speakers (I have Magnepans)?
I’ve tested this receiver on Two family surround sound systems and I noticed a loud audible hiss when turning on the 360 mapping when turning up the volume under -15db
I have been following this receivers thread on AVS and was very intrigued by the 360SSM technology but was turned off by the number of complaints about it. Hiss, loud popping noises and random boot loops are just a few of the complaints. It’s a shame as those who have had units that work fine rave about the sound quality and the added spaciousness of the 360SSM tech. I wound up getting a great deal on the Denon 6700h and went with that instead.
@@marcalvarado1915 I found the surround sound object panning and placement seemed more dynamic and better with that feature turned off. Both systems were setup with a dedicated external amplifier on one and a mix of internal and external amplifier for the other.

But keep the fire extinguisher handy because in about 5 minutes you're going to need it.
Thanks a lot. I prefer the yamahas.
I replaced my Yamaha RX-A2A with a Sony STR-AZ5000ES. The Sony sounds so much better than the Yamaha, for both music and movies. Note that I still use my Yamaha for music in my office/studio.
One of the features he said he didn’t know what it is, another he said it probably doesn’t do anything. If I was Sony I would be really disappointed with this coverage.
well I guess reading a ppt to me cause I can't read it myself without a narrator?
Just one subwoofer preout for that price range receiver , this a big no no for me
YOU FORGOT TO TALK BOUT IF TBE SUB OUT ARE INDEPENDENT..
Tonewinner subwoofers! Big promises from a single TH-camr who looks to be bought out. I'm dying for feedback from a trustworthy source
When you start talking about hiss it starts coming out of your mouth! Must be your microphone as i do not have this problem otherwise 😀
I have a STR-AZ5000ES and the hiss is very real snd annoying if you use 360SSM. I just don’t use it. Without 360SSM the receiver sounds pretty good!
Sorry, Denon hands down for me
Who cares how it measures? How it sounds is 100% more important, smh.
In the future, try out all the features before you make a review on a product and go “I heard it’s good” 😂
