This is 100% true. We don't see companies take as much risk as before for the loss of money. Remember Shadow the hedgehog with guns game. Sure, the game might have sucked but we also got a shit ton of games that later started defining genres like immersive sims and soulsbourne

For the past couple years I’ve been really bored of gaming. I’ve been playing games all my life and I think I eventually got to a point where gaming was just a routine for me. I wasn’t really engaging in the game and was just playing the game cause I felt like I had to, as dumb as that sounds. I tried so hard to find something that would help me get back into gaming but nothing really did it until I tried breath of the wild. Idk what it was but that game just blew me away and really helped me remember to engage in games and really take the time to enjoy everything they have to offer. Ever since then I’ve had a much better experience and I finally feel like I’m getting back to that old feeling and letting myself enjoy all that games have to offer. I’m taking more time to appreciate the music, the visuals, the story, and a bunch of other things. I just wanted to share my experience because I thought that question was interesting.

Happened to me last year during quarantine. I played so much to the point I hopped from one game to another and only a handful games made a lasting impression (I beat more than 50 games in a span of a year, on average I only finished 5 games a year before the pandemic). Now I just want to enjoy playing and not clearing the backlog.

I also felt the same way a few months back. Got to the point where I would just spend ten minutes trying to pick a game to play then loading it up just to quit out of it. I then found sekiro on offer bought that and played it and it got me actually excited to play games again. One of the thing I grew to hate was dying in video games since it meant everything I did before was a waste of time. Sekiro is different as every single time u die you learn something new. Now I'm currently playing through elden rings and it's been pretty good so far.

Surprisingly out of all games to kickstart me back was Mad Max. "Games are bad now" in the same sense "Netflix has nothing good to watch."
Content oversaturation does weird things to the brain. Back when games were fewer and far between it was easier to get into "worse" games and nostalgia glasses ruin our perspective on current games. Having SO much to choose from nowadays makes it harder to appreciate what good is actually out there.
That and... You just getting old. Lol. I'm in the same boat. Falling out of gaming happens to most of us, yet we stay in denial grasping at the nostalgic feelings we used to have.

    • @jhans22
      @jhans22 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agreed with the oversaturation. But.
Games are also getting bad. Same could be said with shows.
In the 2000s, there was no microtransactions in games. The final product had to be good, couldnt patch it up later. Next, shows werent obsessed with political messaging. Notice how hollywood has almost rebooted every classic from the 80s in a failing way?
The graphics and visual fidelity is unreal today. The amount of content and budget for entertainment is insane. There are gems here and there that capture this with originality. These are good things.
However, theres just so many variables now. Back in the 2000s there was a limited scope. Make something fun you're passionate about. Now you need to have good online capability, live services, padding to make the media last longer for the consumers, stories structured to cater to every audience, cant be offensive, cant take risks, it needs to be safe in order for the investors to confidently know they'll earn their money back. Ya feel?

I've been gaming since the early 90's and the industry is far and wide at its lowest point today. Not in the past 30 years have I seen so few games, and so few good games, come out as I have in the last 4 years.
It's been slowly going down hill ever since gaming companies began going corporate. It started in the early 2000's and more and more switched over to corporatism as the years went on. Today, more than 90% of large gaming companies have went corporate, and more than half of the indie developers.
There's literally no stopping it and the industry will never recover. It will get a little better once we're further into this generation, but not by as much as people are thinking.
Everything is now about cost cutting across the board. This is what 100% of corporate business do which is why their products drop in quality ever single time. Smaller development teams including a much higher percentage of unskilled developers who don't earn as much. Corporate executives taking control of the stories and artistry of the games, instead of professional writers and artists. Cutting entire departments, like real soundtrack composers, because they can just use cheap, generic ambient, synth, or electronic noises, instead. Releasing games early, with bugs and glitches then patching them a bunch of times, which was never a thing until this past generation.
All this stuff *will* keep getting worse. It's just the nature of corporatism to destroy anything it touches. Less games, cheaper games, buggier games, etc.
We will still get some good games, but not many. And only 1-2 masterpiece titles every few years.
We used to get 10-20 masterpieces a year. And hundreds of other really great games every year. Now we get 20-30 total games a year with 0-1 being masterpieces and 2-3 being great. The rest being average, below average or just plain bad.

I am nearly 33 and have also felt like I’ve fallen out of love with gaming, but that more comes from a place of not having the time to devote to them as I once did. Being in the phase of life where starting a family and career advancement is taking precedence, it’s less that I’ve “fallen out of love” with gaming and more that this is just not my season. As much as I love video games, they’re never going to trump spending time with my toddler. From someone whose career is not video games (first off, jealous), it has become more of a passive hobby until my lifestyle can better support the allocation of my time there. I’ve also noticed that when I set out with the intentions to play a game which I am 99% confident will be amazing, and then am not able to play as intended, that I associate my frustration and dissatisfaction with not being able to play as often as I’d like with video games in general. That frustration is misplaced, but still real.

I’m 37, I work a lot and I’m often busy with my home, fiancé and dogs. I think the issue I discovered with gaming is that certain games-chiefly open world games, ARE NOT for me. To me, right, linear experiences with very little padding are the games that tend to work best for me.
Years ago, the concept of having a huge world to explore enticed me because I’d had all the time in the world and when I got a new game…that was it for awhile. I find we also fall victim to our backlogs and having too many games to play can also suck the fun out of it because a game can start to feel like an obligation rather than an escape.

30 here and in my opinion I honestly don’t think it’s because of time dependency but by just getting older, atleast that’s what it is for me. I have more than enough time to play 8-10 hours of gaming a day (Work from home on a consultancy only job) and honestly I think it’s just as you get older you get very used to games and a lot of them tend to seem bland as you’ve probably played a better version in the past. For me my prime example is AC Valhalla. If I was 18 and playing that game I would have jizzed lol, it has a lot of what I’m looking for in a game, but because I’m 30 and have played far better games over the years like Black Flag I just don’t get that same enjoyment and excitement playing Valhalla and ended up not as happy while playing it. I think when you have something long enough you tend to not be as intrigued and don’t appreciate it as much, and for me, time has made it harder to find a really good game as I have so much experience with better ones, that’s not to say I can’t still be really excited and enjoy new games, but because of the years of playing thousands of games, it becomes harder and harder with each passing year to find a game that grabs my attention and get me hooked.

@@ExtraZero For me the change to “Massive” open world games is what ruined many of those games. Smaller but more detailed maps and the ability to free roam in that world is what is perfect for me but with modern powerful hardware the go-to move was always to try and make the biggest maps possible meaning you have to consult a map to go anywhere and don’t memorise maps in your mind giving you a better connection to that game world. Prime examples is games like Bully and GTA 3, games I could navigate blindfolded, knowing every turn and every area, it really does make the game a lot more fun and weirdly repayable for me. Ubisoft copy and paste open worlds are some of the games that makes me dislike open worlds at times though.

I'll say this, I was in the same boat as the person who asked why it seemed like there were no good games being released anymore. It felt like most games I played, I got bored with in a matter of hours. That was probably because I was playing the same yearly-released franchise or the same specific genre over and over. Then I was introduced to GamePass on Xbox. I haven't bought a full-priced, $60 game in probably close to 2 years now. GamePass is LOADED with games that I never would've even thought of checking out that I've played and immediately fell in love with (Psychonauts, Dishonored, Sunset Overdrive, Forza Horizon, Flight Simulator, etc.). I know it can be a bit overwhelming and awkward to try new genres but for me, it's totally been worth it.

In the past, you've spoken on being a bit trepidatious about remakes for legendary games like RE4 and MGS due to them being perfect as they are. I agree with this and recently played RE4 again to see how it holds up - it absolutely does.
What games would you be interested in seeing get the full remake treatment? For example, the Demon's Souls remake is fantastic - even if I do dislike a lot of the design changes in things like the OST and enemy visual designs. It felt like a remake that needed to be done, adding in crucial features like omnidirectional movement for example.

I also just replayed fallout New Vegas and put 80 hours Into it in two some weeks! I never played a game like that since high school. I look to these gameranx vids to see what might be good games to play, also the game pass & whatever the ps thing is are worthy platforms for gaming and finding something new.

Like Jake and Thomas, I'm also 31 and have asked myself this question. I think it's something that comes with age. You get very picky about what games are worth your time and become bored with mechanics you've seen copied and pasted from the past 15 years. I realized I should start leveling up in real life. Now I've used that extra time to learn web design and ask nearby places if they need a website. It's been really rewarding, socially and financially. Also exercise and cook more. I still play games but only after I've done everything else I need to do. This isn't a problem for Jake because he gets paid to play and talk about video games, which for fulfills his social and career needs.

What's your take on the Steam Deck from Valve? We've seen what happens when even big companies like Google try going against the jugernauts of the console industry (PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, and gaming PCs in general) Do you think the steam deck stands a chance or is it too much of the same and people might skip it since it's "cooler" to have a mainstream device?

Steam Deck is just a handheld to play your Steam games. Is not competing with consoles, is for people that already play a lot on PC and have many games on Steam.

I literally got the chills when he read "I'm loosing my love for video games" bc I'm the same way. I've been gaming since I was a young lad and have loved watching the progression of the gaming industry. I'm not saying games haven't got more advanced. And to give a little context, I literally have every playstation, all major Nintendo consoles and an Xbox. And I have a dumb amount of roms. That being said I'm still "not feeling it" for most games coming my way now days. I try and branch out and keep my mind open but a lot of games have become a repetitive grind. Without a good story there all the same or VERY similar. And when it comes to online games that's 10x true bc of microtransactions. Games haven't gotten bad, but the incentives in the gaming industry has changed. And if you don't enjoy wasting your money, and wasting your time grinding in repetitive games. I get why you'd think there's nothing out there. Not a lot of games give you what you pay for

As someone turning 32, I find myself saying the same thing lately. Games that should be fun, aren't... and games that are actually good seem few and far between. Granted... in the last 4 months we got bdsp, dying light 2, arceus, and elden ring... so it wasn't a total wash. 33 hours in, and soon to be hundreds more, elden ring... and I'm fucking giddy like a 5yo school girl with a crush the entire time. Without a doubt, it is the ONLY game this year, with zero competition, for GOTY. People I know that don't like souls games are playing it, and continue to play it... fucking elden ring makes me want to cry out of near perfection. (Guess my luck ran out. At the time I played a lot of competitive multiplayer games and it just became too toxic for me. re: If you feel like you're loosing your love for gaming.
I felt this way for almost a year, i played almost exclusively open world singleplayer games. I tried playing different types of games recently when I got a ps5; dreams, death stranding, beyond two souls, ratchet and clank. I got my love back from playing genres that are new to me.
I absolutely hate dark souls; I think it's insufferably boring, honestly. Elden Ring came out and I said "fuck it". Absolutely loving the exploration, views, aesthetic, lore. Combat is tough and it took me about 15-20 hours to get confident to say "Yeah I know how this works". I still die 40 hours in and it still annoys me because some of the deaths are just straight bs xD but it's a great game and I'm glad I pushed myself to try new things.
So if you feel like you're bored of games; try a new genre, invest some real time into a game you never thought of previously.

To the question about getting bored with games. I am about to turn 41, and I will say as I have gotten older I find myself in the same mindset, but it is more due to lack of time to devote to games. They take more time to play, so I choose not to play as I can't prioritize the time to play. However recently I have been big into indies that are short, a couple of hours playtime helps keep me in gaming without feeling like I am being overwhelmed with how much time it is going to take. So perhaps finding those shorter indies might help you as well.

Getting bored with anything at 31 that you were really into when you were younger says a lot more about you. And not in a bad way. Half the excitement in getting into that stuff when you're really young is your brain growing at an alarming rate. Yes it still grows when you get older, neuroplasticity blah blah blah, but it's definitely not in the same way. I'm going through it right now with music, been a musician since I was 8 and I'm 44 now. Definitely have to work harder to find things that excite me, but a huge part of this is natural human nature.

My problem was that I was just forcing myself to finish each game I got so I could move on to the next one and finish that. Open world with crimes popping up while driving a cool car or bike, conducting interviews while reading facial expressions as well as heart rate would be cool. Fun shootouts as well as a skill tree/progression system to become a badass as well as a variety of different cosmetics to be your own type of Robocop. • @JodieMuramoto

I have a follow up comment to Thomas' thought on boring games - I'm a 47 year-old woman. I've been playing video games since the Atari days. Our family had a first generation Intellivision. We also owned an IBM PS2 (1983). My first video game was King's Quest. I spent a lot of my childhood in bowling alleys and I learned a thing or two playing Karate Champ, Donkey Kong, and Space Invaders. It blows my mind how far games have come since those days. I can see your point of view in that video games might not be as engaging to you. Many a night I have sat in front of my systems scrolling endlessly through game libraries trying to figure out if I'm "really in the mood" for it.
Now for the strange connection here - in the last year I started playing Rocket League. I know. Weird. But I found the competitiveness of the game along with the quick reactions helped hone my aging hands into playing more difficult games. It also sometimes solved the "I don't have time for this" issue when I can jump into some RL matches without much commitment and then log off as quickly as I logged on. The randomness of playing online meant that every game was unique which required quick reactive muscle memory to play well. This in turn made games like Returnal, Bloodborne, Demon Souls, Nioh 2, and now Elden Ring a little easier to play. I will even jump on to play a match or two of RL just to warm up my hands for boss fights.
And maybe that's too much time commitment to get into games again. My issue is as I age, my hands aren't as nimble as they used to be and I struggled with reaction times until I found a game that helped train my hands again. So maybe look at your situation and figure out what is missing from your gaming hobby and find a way to ignite that passion again. Quirky boss fights? Unique open worlds? Online player communities? Lack of time and energy? You might find something out there to help you light that gaming fire. Or...maybe you are just burned out on gaming in general and it's time to hang up the D-pads for a while. That's ok, too. When you're ready, the rest of the gaming community will be here waiting for your return.
    Good luck on your journey.

I'm 32 and I hit that point a few years back where I thought games were boring as well. 1 or 2 would always spark my interest but I would never finish them. Then I discovered indie games (something I never thought I would say) and it was like re-opening Pandora's box again. As they are usually smaller teams they really focus and flesh out a key mechanic and make it fun as hell. From their I discovered older games which I had completely missed out on (Yakuza!!!!) and now I've found my mojo again. Eldren Ring is fantastic so far but so is Ori and the will of the Wisps. Newer Resident Evil games are amazing but so is Loop Hero, Not for Broadcast, Rimworld, PC Building Simulator, Unpacking, Escape Simulator, Dysmantle, TABS.
We are in the best time of gaming because of the back catalogue we have and the smaller developers.
Don't try to get in on the hype - this is my key message. When you pick up Cyberpunk in a few years, there will likely be no bugs and it will be super cheap so you can forgive the mistakes in it. Elden RIngs stutters won't be there. The list goes on.
Hopefully this helps some people out there

The thing I've realised is that if gaming is getting tiresome take some time away from them for a bit. There's no rush to play the latest thing straight away. Games aren't going anywhere.
I'm 38 now so I've found myself slowing down, not finding the time or inclination to stay in touch with current trends. However my ps3 is still plugged in. I have plenty of older games ready to go whenever I feel the need to jump in.

When people say there are no good games anymore it's just BS. Like a friend said he hadn't bought a PS5 because there were no games, what the hell? I just went on metacritic and there's AT LEAST 15 incredible games to play right now. Some of them are from the PS4 generation but the majority are PS5 and up. Now where I will agree is that recreating the nostalgia or feeling we had for games as children... that's far tougher. Real life can be too distracting and adult friends are simply too busy or not "in the vibe" to play, plus most gaming with friends is done online nowadays so a lot of that sharing is just gone. Sadly there's a chance nothing will compare to watching my friend beat Bowser on N64 or playing Mario Party with a group of guy and girl friends on the couch or playing Pokemon Stadium, or being scared shtless as a child playing Alien on PSOne alone at night. Thanks for the content, Jake!

Probably what he meant was their aren't "enough" PS5 that "he would be into". The are less than 15 PS5 only games, and even if they qre all good, it doesn't mean they are everyones cup of tea.
The BIG problem for next gen GAMES is the system shortage is forcing devs to release last gen versions, which usually cuts back on quality potential for the mext gen, because most devs are going to build the game for last gen and just give the next gen higer rez and/or 60fps. They aren't going to take full advantage of the next gen because that makes more works for making 2 builds that are far more different.

I was experiencing major gaming burnout mid-2020. I'd pick something up, play for an hour then switch it off and do something else. Couldn't bring myself to play big sessions with my friends anymore.
But then I decided to reinstall a game I always wanted to try again after bouncing off it when it released. Nier: Automata. And boy oh boy did that remind me of why I love games. It made me feel the way only Ocarina of Time can make me feel, except OoT is my childhood favourite game of all time. So for a game to spark that feeling NOW? I was blown away.

Hey Jake, love your videos man! My question is which out of the major sports franchise games could you see benefitting the most from a large scale overhaul, and what would you like to see the developers do? Would be awesome to have a new and innovative feature to be excited about for one of the mainline releases of Fifa, Madden, 2k, or NHL. The “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” mentality has far outstayed it’s welcome for me personally.

I agree with you Jake. There are so many good games out to find and enjoy. Dead Space, RDR2, RE Village or any of them. Rdr1 all dead space games, dead island and so many more all Metro games, Burnout games, especially Burnout Revenge. I can't remember them all but yes there are many good games and people should let their imagination work fully when playing a game," like a kid" so we can get engaged and just into the game like we did when we were younger. I think many of us lose and chase that when we get older cuz of growing up and having so many responsibilities but we can still have fun.

Can jive with the video content 100%, I still jump back onto cities: skylines or some older game in 2022. There’s little to no joy. Might be pandemic-related. However, there are good quality games out there. Rather than rely on other’s reviews, I’ve started exploring games myself. Recently played “the forgotten city” for example, loved it. Even the new COD vanguard maps, love it.

I have a question for your next q&a. Are you happy with what gameranx is now? I find the videos to be without any imagination or creativety what so ever. Basically the watchmojo of video games.
"10 times it turned out you were the villain in games"
"top 10 games with good wheather effects"
"top 10 overpowered weapons in games"
Are you actually happy and excited making these videos?

    "Are games boring?"
Me, 36, been playing games for 3 decades.
Hades, Elden Ring, Cyberpunk 2077, What Remains of Edith Finch, Persona 5, Subnautica(!), Outer Wilds, Stardew Valley, Undertale, Gorogoa, list goes on...
Not all brand new, but all recent experiences I have *loved*. In fact, I would suggest to those people who think modern gaming is boring go back to some of their old games. They might either refresh your love for games, and/or remind you how intensely far video gaming has come.

The problem being a 30yr old gamer is that a lot times games from 10-15 years ago came to us at our most impressionable times. I look back very fondly on Max Payne, most Pokemon games, NFSU, Tekken 3 (for some odd reason), GTA SA, and especially RDR.

I also want to see a Robin, for sure. - I kinda feel like they should throw them in late in the second movie and then continue in the third. Just as a person that Bruce comes across one way or another first, later perhaps getting more involved. - Or like early in the third, to develop Robin throughout the movie and let it go into a fourth movie, with or without Batman. - I kinda feel the one movie we have right now, while it has elements of pretty much all the preceding movies, it's also a bit similar to the Arkham-games. If we'd get a Robin like that it could probably work really well.
As for villains: Hugo Strange, Ventriloquist... Black Mask?... A more fleshed-out Zsasz?... I feel like they should be characters that can kinda keep things grounded. Almost like how Penguin is now a mobster and less of a caricature. - Well, he is, but like a real person could be. - Maybe they could still do a Poison Ivy. I figure if they'd go to Arkham, she could just be Dr. Pamela Isley there alongside Hugo Strange, and her alter-ego could "grow" from there.
Sounds kinda dull, perhaps, but maybe a bunch of characters like that could conspire and all work against the Batman. - Same for a potential Riddler/Joker-duo. Let them be in charge of the nutcases at Arkham and order the likes of Strange and Isley to conjure up more looneys to break out and go after the Batman and Gotham or something. - Let's see what Battinson would do when the entire city goes nuts. Now that it's a mess anyway, they could have stuff like riots and crazy Arkham inmates go around. I just wanna see a Gotham in a much more nutty state than just a city with a few criminals. I wanna see Batman feel lost and too little already, which could force him to let someone like a Robin in to help out. - So far, while Chris O'Donnell's was alright, the best Robin we've seen so far is Hit-Girl. 🤷🏻‍♂ If we could get a sidekick like that for Battinson, that would be awesome.
