      The Deck, I like it because it very impressive how every card works for every faction even though they all play different. Some card are very important and also not that good for every faction, the important part is that every card can be played by everyone (as long they meet the requirements). We cant forget about those Ambush Cards! Makes the game even more interesting.

    Reason #4: Anyone Can Win
    I've gotten my dad to play twice. Despite expressing frustration throughout that he didn't know how to play, or that he was doing poorly or his faction was underpowered, he won both games. The first with a domination card.

    You're absolutely right about the narrative that this game creates when you play, the result of this is that it also leaves lasting memories. I will never forget the moment in my very first game when the Crows hired a force of Otters and sailed them down the river to destroy my Cat fortress! (This made my eventual victory all the sweeter)
    Games that can do this are rare indeed, many of them are are very difficult to get to the table, for Root to be as accessible and brief compared to so many of the others is remarkable.

    What I love about Root is that it comes off as a very complex game, but is actually a very simple war game that has it all. Cole managed to meld just about every game mechanic into what it is, fundamentally, a very simple area control game. I always tell new players that, although it comes off as very intimidating, mostly all a new player needs to know to be successful at slowing opponents is to understand rule, capture squares, and destroy enemy buildings.

    I was not that into board games until lockdown and i did a google search on what board game i might enjoy. I got Root out of boredom and have become completely obsessed with this majestic game. I try to organise games as much as possible and have taught all my friends. Root has introduced me to board games that are as fun as the video games I play and the community around Root is way nicer than most video game communities. I'd love to see a look at Vast from you, most people who did faction videos for it pretty much just read the rules without any of the talk of underlying strategy.
    I finally got my hands on Crystal Caverns, as I decided to get it aparently right after it went out of print and had to use Boardgame Geek, and I'm really enjoying it, even if I've only played a few times so far, and have so much to dig into with the main game factions, and the there's the pretty much 5 more in The Fearsome Foes, then the Mysterious Mansion and it's rules for crossing the two games over and THEN the Haunted Hallways. There's a lot to explore.

    I love playing this game and will happily play it anytime anyone wants to, the thing that keeps it out of being my absolutely favorite though is the learning curve. I love teaching my non gamer friends the enjoyment of Root, but with Root I don't know how to give them even a chance of winning their first game. And we lead with that and they are fine with it, but I wish it was more possible for a first time player to have more of a chance of winning.

    • @LordoftheBoard
      @LordoftheBoard  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good thoughts! When we introduce it to a player we kinda make it a habit to let them explore the game a bit and I’ll go at their pace. If they attack and attack I may attack back. If they don’t I won’t. I kinda react persay. And often time they get closer games and sometimes I have purposely let them win. They way they want to play again coming out of feeling more confident :)

    • @goodhorsehymn
      @goodhorsehymn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most first timers I've played with have been within a turn or two of winning, and can see how close they were. That's enough for them! I don't think any game should be winnable on the first attempt.

    Root is in my top 3 (but with some updates it might get to top 1), everything in the video is true, I like that it is a relatively short game and that each faction has its own vibe,
    but there are things missing that are in my other top 2 games (TI4e and MTG: EDH).
    What I would need for Root to be top 1 would be to have some kind of trading or "adventure" aspect, I'm still new at the game, but I already feel like there is too much meta play, it feels like it is a bit like a puzzle game, where you need to know the optimal way of playing and you can't exactly deviate or you most likely will lose - like if a faction does this, then you must do this (alternatively you can try to table talk, but it also boils down to "I think that faction is going to win + trying to downplay your ability to win") - it kind of takes the magic out of the game.

    • @LordoftheBoard
      @LordoftheBoard  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are completely different games. I play Villainous more casually but I play it well. Its easy to teach to anyone but you can learn to count cards and start to master aspects of the game. Root is just a lot more complex - I come from a wargame background so it appeals to me there - the theme is super unique, the biggest similarity is the asymmetry between characters/factions within the game.
      If your group can take more heavy rules and doesn't mind confrontation in board games, Root is great.

      Hey I actually adore it solo. It’s really good. You can also really match your skill level as they have a ton of additions you can add to each faction to make it harder. And to run them it’s as simple as drawing a card and doing what the board tells you based on the cards suit :)

    • @IanM92
      @IanM92 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LordoftheBoard I meant like are there certain factions that work better than others solo? For example, I’ve never played the Riverfolk faction, but from reading about them they seem to be dependent on player interaction. Was just curious if an automated player could simulate that well enough?

      @@IanM92 oh sorry! I see what you mean. Sadly Riverfolk and lizard cult would be the only two I wouldn’t play solo. All the others I would mix and match and I enjoy that more. Hi! Your channel is awesome, and root is awesome. I've been learning from channels like yours and hosting game nights with some friends and it's been super fun! In this video at about the 3:46 mark you are talking about a mechanic that I don't understand. Maybe I missed something, or maybe you are referring to a house rule that you employ? What do you mean when you say the "negotiation game?" Is there a mechanic that I'm missing or are you just referring to "shit talking" your opponents? I love the game, but I keep running into scenarios where a 4 player game can go for 4 hours and someone is losing for 3 and a half hours straight and it's not fun for them at all.

    Hi Sam, I'm very interested in purchasing Root, however I'm alittle nervous about buying it and not have the recommended numbers of players to play the game with (4). It would mostly be my husband and I playing and third player from time to time. If I can round up more than 3 players I'm wondering if it would be too hard to teach because it's rated on BGG a 3.69 and when we play board games with family and friends we're mostly bringing out games in the light to light/medium category on BGG. What do you think? Also what's your favorite expansion?

    I sold Root with its expansion, personally do not think it plays well in lower player count and learning this game too new players is too much rules too learn the basic rules and every faction in play too understand what other people are doing. Also because I have “too much” games in my collection, when I haven’t played it for a while I need too learn the rules again and teach it again aswel. But I like the esthetic of the game and the mechanics.
