I’m not really sure why the camera quality feels so different in the RTD era, but it makes me love it even more because it feels less superficial than Moffat’s. Love your videos, keep it up :)

    • @HarboWholmes
      @HarboWholmes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +50

Well apart from the obvious difference of the RTD era being in SD quality (until Planet of the Dead), the camera style was very much trying to imitate other early-mid 2000s shows, along with there being a lower budget

Prof. Evil Pictures I think I just feel more nostalgic when I watch the RTD episodes, but I agree that Moffat’s episodes were vibrant and beautiful to look at, and I really enjoyed those episodes as well. Series 11 and 12 look quite dull and gloomy in comparison.

    • @TheOtherKaneda
      @TheOtherKaneda 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Bit late, but like Harbo says, most of the RTD era is SD, while Moffat started out with HD. The one thing all of the RTD era episodes have in common, including the HD ones, is that they're shot on digital video, with post processing filters added to make the end result somewhat more "film-like".
Between The End of Time and The Eleventh Hour, BBC Wales acquired digital film cameras, and the contrast - even to Waters of Mars (which is, to me, the best shot HD episode in the RTD era) - is staggering. To my eyes, the Moffat era is *much* more cinematic, but that doesn't really detract from the (for Who) unique style of the RTD episodes. Especially if we compare RTD era to the Chibnall era "style"... which is actually even *closer* to actual modern cinema - even the way modern cinema looked during Moffat's reign. It's style without substance - to me it looks like little thought has been put into the look of series 11 and 12, other than "make it look modern".
In the same vein as Prof. Evil Pictures, Lily Bea, and Hermes, I find that look dull and artificial and cold - it's succumbed to everything "wrong" with cinema of the 2010's. I say "wrong", which is obviously subjective, but it's all trends that have arisen mainly due to refusals to learn from the experiences of the past. Those trends which will more or less die off (much like 3D cinema) when cinematographers and editors catch up with the knowledge of people who worked 20-100 years before them. And which will, in the long run, make series 11 and 12 look *more* dated than "Rose". From the orange/teal color grading plague over flattened contrast, to insanely excessive lens flares. At the same time, it manages to ignore almost everything that digital cinema has done *right* in the past decade...

I want more companions like Rose, Martha and Donna- everyday folk swept up in intergalactic insanity. Companions who are grounded, have obligations, lives that are impacted by and impact on their adventures.
I would love to see a companion struggling with a less than perfect life. A graduate that can't find a job. Someone with a tumultuous home life. Maybe they're homeless, or on probation. Someone who's depressed or grieving. A single parent coping with empty nest syndrome.
People who feel like that they have nothing to lose acting as a character foil to a relentlessly optimistic Doctor, or one who's a compulsive fixer. it could be an interesting inversion of previous relationships.

"Rose" was the first ever episode I watched back in 2008 when I was 13. Im from Israel and have never heard of Doctor Who before, and I watched the entire first series without even knowing that I am watching a reboot of something. It really did do a FANTASTIC job. I remember thinking that the Autons MUST be the main villians of the show, and only after watching the second episode I actually got the show's format. I remember being really surprised (and scared actually) when suddenly episode 4 ended on a cliffhanger, like the show can do whatever it wants. I remember the shock I had when the Doctor regenerated at the end of the series, I've never seen anyone do that ever. Also, this video is the first time im hearing that people didn't really like Murray Gold's score for series 1. There are so many classics there and to this day there are many many tracks I really wish they had officially realesed.

I didn't see it when it came out in 2005, but I saw it when it was Hulu back in college and let me just say that I absolutely loved it after the first episode. The episode itself was the perfect way to revive a beloved franchise with bringing familiar elements of the show for older fans and being more up to the production and viewing tastes of the new fans. The 9th Doctor and Rose were a great pair and I loved both of them in Series 1. Rose was a good start to the new series of Doctor Who (2005 - 2020) and a good comeback for Doctor Who. Rose had fast pacing, action packed music and a good introduction to both The 9th Doctor and Rose Tyler. Rose reminded me of the classic TV show The Avengers. Christopher Eccleston had the humour of Tom Baker and the mystery and dark side of Sylvester McCoy. Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper had good chemistry. Russell T. Davies brought Doctor Who into the 21st century. I thought it was a shame Christopher Eccleston only did 1 only season and it was also a shame he didn't return form "Day of the Doctor". He didn't want to do it and at the time he was busy working on Thor: The Dark World. Rose is Doctor Who RTD era at it's best.

I hadn't known that Dr. Who restarted. By the time I was aware of this fact, this first season of NuWho was already on DVD. So, I ordered a copy and binge watched these episodes.
This also meant that I had no idea who Billie Piper was, or that she was a singer. I had never heard of her. She was simply someone they cast to be the first Companion for the reboot. Which in a way, she might actually take as a complement. I had no preconceptions or ideas on how she would play. All I had was her work as Rose. I thought she was an excellent, strong companion.

Yes! Thank you! I loved the first season, so many things done so well, easily my fav of nuwho. I hope one day they can get back to this sorta epic quality, and that hope is honestly the only reason I keep watching now, it's become more miss than hit over the years... But even if it never gets there, at least I have my Tardis-shaped DVD box set of season 1 to rewatch obsessively! XD

I've been a dedicated Whovian since I first saw "Unearthly Child" in the early '90s, and this episode made me equally a fan of "New Who"! Plus, it gave me a new best Doctor--my list (at the moment--always subject to change) is 9, 10, 7, 4, 3, 1 2, not enough info to rank the rest; and a new favorite companion: Rose, the Brigadier, Ace, Zoe, Jo, Romana 2, ....

Rose was my first episode and they couldn't have done a better job at getting me hooked on the show. We have a great Doctor with a great sense of mystery and a tortured past, a relatable and down to earth companion as we follow the story through her eyes and a simple plot with great stakes and scares with the Autons as a perfect villain for a reintroduction to the show

THIS was my first DR WHO episode ever on March 23rd 2005 and i was 15 and coming off MIB 1, Star Trek Voyager Futurama and 1995 Outer Limits and I LOVED It from Episode One. Ep3 was when i became an Obsessive fan, Dr Who was my life until Smith came along. Dr Who , Torchwood and SJA was next to Star Trek for for best TV Sci FI id seen up to that point, but off the back of Dr who ive watched many many many Sci Fi after this like Stargate SG1, Andromeda, Babylon 5 and Smallville. I thank Doctor Who for expanding my Sci FI pallet.

I agree the autons were a perfect pic for the first episode! the monster in this episode is really just a backdrop for the doctor and rose to meet, unlike others where it's the focus. so it had to be a monster you didn't really have to "figure out". a testament to how well it worked is that I didn't even realise they were a classic villain till last year!

a weird inconsistency i noticed is that when the Doctor is in Rose's apartment, he starts to analyze his look as if he's only just regenerated. But its a plot point and its mentioned several times that he's been traveling alone for a while as the 9th. And those times couldnt have been without Rose because everything after this episode with 9 involves her

Rose hasn't aged well with its special effects and a bin burping after "swallowing" Mickey is still one of the dumbest Doctor Who scenes ever. But Rose is still a great reintroduction of Doctor Who for the 21st century audience as RTD did a great job with casting the right people for the Doctor and the companion. I'm thankful to RTD for introducing this unique show to the new generation such as myself back in 2005.

Everyone points their fingers at 9 when they ask which one of the doctors is the edgy doctor, that has never really been the case for me.
Sure in the terms of looks, 9 does have the clothes, but he's goofy and witty.
He can be serious at times, but he's also the guy who swapped Jack's blaster with a banana and wanted to help everyone he could. He was almost in tears when he got to scream out "everybody lives!"
To me, 9 is just a puppy in a leather jacket.
Now 11, 11 on the other hand is the one I would point a finger to if someone asked for the most edgy of doctors.
Sure he seems like a goof at first with how he acts, until you remember how many people he has loss. The amount of people he had manipulated to get to his means, how many people he had lied to both friend and foe.
This was the guy that led an all out war just to get back a friend.
First glance he's the jolly goof but really he's the dark guy in a fez.

I'm glad he mentioned Rose being a working class women, because I think that's a big reason why the first season of Doctor Who was so subversive. As he said, all of the earlier companions were wealth or middle class, because working class people are very underrepresented on TV and in media. Part of the relatability of Rose's character is that she comes from an environment that is familiar to many people.

As a non-Brit who had only vague cultural osmosis exposure to Doctor Who as the new series was coming out, and first watching it as a teenager with no real expectations, "Rose" was absolutely an excellent series opener. I had my quibbles, I didn't much care for the Autons as villains and frankly the phrase "anti-plastic" made me cringe, and even today Rose herself is probably my least favorite companion in the seasons (or 'series') of NuWho I watched, but the fact I did watch from "Rose" all the way to the first few episodes of the Eleventh Doctor before losing interest certainly speaks to it setting a good precedent.

I HAVE SOMETHING COMPLETELY SEPARATE TO MENTION IT’S IDEAS FOR A (DOCTOR WHO) MOVIE:
First off, I can imagine a movie of (DOCTOR WHO) being shown on either the HBO channel network, or being shown in MovieTheaters.
Next is that I can imagine that two different versions of (The Doctor) could come in contact with one another by mere chance, and I imagine it might be do to a dimensional fracture that has suddenly happened; An so I can imagine that the (Jodie Whittaker) version of (The Doctor) that I imagine is from an alternate reality universe, and I imagine her T.A.R.D.I.S. comes in contact with something that blast it out of control that leads to her going through a portal that sends to another reality universe, and so her T.A.R.D.I.S. comes across another T.A.R.D.I.S. that belongs to another version of (The Doctor) & to add that version Doctor is a male who has a male body form, and also to add in his universe he has a female instant clone that is his daughter named JENNY.
To add in the male (The Doctor’s) universe his life turned out completely different from that of other version of (The Doctor) played by (Jodie Whittaker) that is from alternate reality universe, and not only that the male (The Doctor’s) enemy known as (Master) had died in a much different way as well, and to add the male version of (The Doctor) he has been on his own for about six years long, and so he hasn’t had any companions with that entire time because of certain events that had happened that lead him decide to be alone.
Plus to add in the male (The Doctor’s) reality universe he has decided to keep his distance from his former friends companions, and it is do to a small number of reasons why he had decided to do that, and goes for Captain-Jack, Mickie, Ms. Doctor Smith, and to add many more companions just like them.
I can imagine while the male version (The Doctor) was on his own he waited a long time before deciding to want to traveling through time to go look for his daughter JENNY, and so right when he was about to travel through time that is when the female body form (The Doctor) T.A.R.D.I.S. shows up out of no where, and boy does it ever surprise him to see another T.A.R.D.I.S. that isn’t his, that isn’t his enemy the Master’s, and to add it surprises him even more when he discovers that this other T.A.R.D.I.S. belongs to a different version of himself that is from an alternate reality universe.
“Now who I imagine being the face of the male form of (The Doctor) in the (DOCTOR WHO) movie; My first thought is Ben Barnes, my 2nd. thought is Colin Morgan, and my 3rd. thought is Bradley James.”
“So anyway this is my list of suggestion ideas for a (DOCTOR WHO) movie story script that could be used to get made someday, and I strongly feel that it would be great to have a (DOCTOR WHO) movie get made, along with that see it, and hopefully have most of my ideas used to be put into the story movie-script, and to add hopefully with my suggestion ideas it might make it possible to give a proper ending to (Jodie Whittaker’s) version of (The Doctor) & also to add very carefully introduce a new twist to the storyline of the (DOCTOR WHO) stories in order to hopefully save what remains of the show series franchise.”
