    Short but packed with good stuff. Yay! In my opinion, the most important thing is to write the story you're passionate about. If that means research, and even a lot of it, the passion will overflow into that added work. Having said that, since there's always a natural alignment of what you know and what you're passionate about, it's completely acceptable to write what you know too.

    I do this all the time. I've never been inside a space station. :) I've never been to Moscow, or Lapland. Sure, I write a lot about Iceland and I've been there.
    I should share this. Even if you have lived in the location of your novel, even if it's your own country, you still don't know everything, and feedback from others is always a big plus.

    I usually base the plot on the town I live in, changing the name or not being too obvious about it, but outside of that I don't always have the same setting and research works otherwise!
