That was one thing I loved about my 62 ragtop when I was a kid. It just had a stock 1200 but that was the most reliable car I had back then. Fired up first time EVERY time no matter how cold it was.
It's always impressive when VW's start straight up in deep snow conditions. Just hope I have the same success when I take my trike to a winter rally up in Scotland in February.
Truthfully I wonder why I put up with all this high performance sh*t . This car is dead reliable and fun to drive. Older chicks LOVE it! hehehe I thinks it's the eyelashes on the headlights.hehehe
I used to drive a '71 Super Beetle in the late '70's-early 80's in Vermont (plenty of cold and snow). I would keep the engine warm overnight using a simple old style garage drop light with an incandescent bulb in it placed up next to the engine (not near anything that could melt or catch fire) - it acted like a block heater. Never had a problem starting in the cold weather. It seemed to keep the engine/oil warm for a quick and safe start-up. Later on, I found what I can best describe as an oil drain cover heater. It was electric, looked like a small coiled stove heating element, bolted right onto the oil drain/screen cover under the car. The power cord was partly enclosed in a metal tube which then ran up into the engine compartment and fed the electrical plug in wire up and out. I never fully trusted it to not short out but it worked perfectly keeping that engine oil warm. engine always started in cold weather no problem.
Wow more than us. Wed AM my son had to drive me to the hospital for a plan visit to cut the cast off my foot treat the wound and install a new casy, which is now a weekly event this winter for us. We had no snow on tue. there was a chance we might get some and yes we did, but not as much as you did...yours looks like a wet heavy snow were you had enough to shape your bug into a square back. Best vw cold start this year she run amazing have a great turkey day. In all the years I been following your channel , your vw run and you drive & enjoy them.
I got a invitation to go to Bus's by the bridge in January. Sure sounds tempting. I'm going to need a lot more view's and thumbs up to afford that.......
That's how the snow plow driver gets to work. When I had my Beetle on the road I would start it up in the snow and it would pee the neighbors off when their cars wouldn't start. I did help them though with jumper cables.
Snow looks beautiful, specially from Florida! Seriously, very beautiful but I just don’t want to deal with the snow. She started right up and purred, excellent job putting her together and getting it dialed in. Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving my friend and a great rest of the week. Stay warm!!
Thanks I appreciate that! Now that it's summer time and 90 degree days it's refreshing to see some snow. LOL I guess that's why California is so overcrowded...
Bev and I took our beach buggy for a spin around the mountain on Tuesday. Ended up with a flat battery 50k from home. Push started it and made it home (can't do that in a new car). Blew the ignition bulb.
Wow , very impressive cold start. To bad you can’t keep it covered . A lot of memories in that one. You have a bug for every occasion, not a bus fan ? You need a camper bus. Anyway I hope you had a great Thanksgiving day.
Tires are about worn out. I didn't want to get it stuck and block the street. The also put down a lot of Mag chloride to melt the snow and it eats these old cars.
@@TheEZGZ ah, yeah you don’t want that on the beetle. Years ago before I had any interest in beetles I worked with a crazy old drunk who used to tell stories about his beetle back in the 50’s... claimed it was the best vehicle he’s drove in the snow... would drive 8 hours through 3 feet of snow while drinking a whole case of beer on the drive to go shack up with his girl 🤣... I think he may have been exaggerating a bit.
I wonder if being so close to the lake makes a difference? I know I get more than my share of hail in the summer as well. We should get together for another BS session one of these days and swap a few lies. LOL
@@TheEZGZ Loveland has a lot of lakes it could a BS session is in order. It's been great seeing you making videos again. Again happy Thanksgiving stay warm.
I really enjoy a nice deep fluffy snow. I just hate when it turns icy and lumpy afterwards. Around here they dump Mag Chloride and salt on the roads and it just instantly makes any bare metal rust.
Nice and quick start up. Does sound bulletproof. Man that’s a lot of snow. Hope you’re staying warm and have a nice Thanksgiving Day my brother. BigW:-)
Hi Hope you are good? I was wondering if you have ever had water coming into your vw bugs? Wet carpets in the footwell depending on how you are parked? I have replaced the drivers door rubber but no difference....All my heater channels are new so I am very concerned about this!! I need to find the issue fast and resolve it!!
Sure I have, The things you mention are common. If you have a retracting sun roof the gutter drains connect to tubes that run down the "A" pillars? Leaky trunk seals can allow water to go under gas tank, down the front and come in where the pan and body meet. Peddle assembly holes? Leaky windshield washer hose connection on the dash. blah, blah.blah. One time I took some dry newspaper and layed it on the floor the night before an expected rain. Next morning it was more obvious with my leak was...... Good Luck
Check the oil level before firing up!! Great engine, well tuned up for sure. Makes this rainy windy day a lot better for me here in europe shithole. Blessings
Good Point to demonstrate checking the oil for viewers sake. I new there was plenty of oil as it has a full flow filter with 1 1/2 quart oil sump on the bottom. The oil light went out right away on start. I only got in the car to push in the clutch so it wasn't trying to turn over that heavy oil in the tranny. I drive it a month ago to charge up the battery because it would turn over back then. It seemed ok today. LIFE IS GOOD
@@TheEZGZ Yoo EZ, I was thinking tonight what a nice invention it would be upgrading vw cases and cranks with ball bearings? You ever seen of heard about this in aircooled cases? Would the case also stress out after time and still need to be line bored? Maybe having less friction also and higher rpm range... Your from the racing stuff , never seen a guy with this in the dunes? :D Looking forward to your video's, you have a calming personality and asome knowlage. Greetings from Belgium

Hay snow man, I have been following the weather at moms, and yep she is snowed in too. I sure wish mine would do what yours just did. On really cold mornings, she will fire right up, and have the high idle, for about 10 seconds, then it will go to loping, and keep getting slower till it dies. I have figured out if you quickly run back to the carb, and just slightly open the choke with your finger, with the arm that controls the fast idle cam, it let's her breath, and the idle with raise back up. So I tried backing off on the choke, no help. Only when it's cold outside, when it is warm, fires right up no issues. I thinking the choke pull off is not working, any thoughts? Happy Thanksgiving sir
The last time I drove it was a month or so ago. I put some fresh gas in it and the idle was not smooth due to more Ethanol in the winter fuel here. I turned the small fuel screw open a tiny bit and that helped. I also played with the bigger air screw to increase the idle until it smoothed out. I'm sure it would have died at every stop sign until it fully warmed the intake manifold. That choke adjustment is a touchy thing. That's why I wanted to see if it would fire up today. I should have lifted the air cleaner to see where I had it set. I'm thinking I had the line on the choke cover all the way to the left side of the marks on the carb body. Hope that helps you? I noticed it kept running ok when I blipped the throttle and the idle came down a bit so it was moving down the steps already. Take care my friend.
Me too :-) I went to drive it about a month ago and the battery was dead from sitting. I drove around back then and put some fresh gas in it. That probably helped.
Thanks again, have a good Thanksgiving (not some thing we have in Scotland), we 're about as deep in bulls***t as you are in snow (General elections and Brexit)
Thank you sir. Hard to believe that your Bull***t could Trump ours. LOL . Oh well, life goes on. We sometimes ask ourselves what happened to Ancient civilizations??? I think government decisions were there demise.
The tires are done otherwise I would have taken it for a putt. I didn't want to pull out and get stuck and then block the road for my neighbors. Besides that the main roads were already coated in salt by the city. (bad)
