  • Learn Adobe Photoshop 2024 in Steps. Adjustment Layers using a White or Black Brush. This is the second way to make an adjustment layers. First, we learned how to make a mask on an adjustment layer using a selection. Today well will make an adjustment but apply white or black to the mask with the brush tool. Both methods have their time and place. I tend you to use both.
Make sure you practice both. You really need to understand the process because it is key to toning in Photoshop.
Layer adjustments in Adobe Photoshop refer to the tools and features that allow you to make non-destructive changes to the appearance of a layer. These adjustments affect the layer they are applied to, providing a way to enhance or modify the colors, tones, and characteristics of an image without permanently altering the original pixel data. Here are some common layer adjustment features in Photoshop:
    1. *Adjustment Layers:*
    - Adjustment layers are special layers that apply color and tonal adjustments without directly affecting the layer beneath them. They can be added by clicking on the "New Adjustment Layer" icon at the bottom of the Layers panel.
    - Common adjustment layers include:
    - *Hue/Saturation:* Adjusts the hue, saturation, and lightness of colors.
    - *Levels:* Fine-tunes the tonal range of an image.
    - *Curves:* Allows precise control over brightness and contrast.
    - *Brightness/Contrast:* Adjusts overall brightness and contrast.
    - *Color Balance:* Modifies the balance of colors in an image.
    - *Gradient Map:* Maps colors based on gradient presets.
    2. *Layer Styles:*
    - Layer styles are effects that can be applied directly to a layer, affecting its appearance. While not strictly adjustment layers, they offer similar control over certain aspects of the layer's look.
    - Common layer styles include:
    - *Drop Shadow:* Adds a shadow behind the layer.
    - *Inner Shadow:* Adds a shadow inside the edges of the layer.
    - *Gradient Overlay:* Applies a gradient over the layer.
    - *Color Overlay:* Fills the layer with a solid color.
    3. *Smart Filters:*
    - Smart Filters allow you to apply filters to layers in a non-destructive manner. They can be adjusted or removed at any time without affecting the original layer's content.
    4. *Blend Modes:*
    - Blend modes determine how a layer blends with the layers beneath it. While not adjustments in the traditional sense, blend modes can significantly impact the appearance of layers.
Layer adjustments are crucial for maintaining flexibility in your editing workflow. They enable you to experiment with different looks, easily make changes, and fine-tune the visual elements of your images without compromising the original data.
