Bought my first kindle just before Christmas and I was so torn between this one and the Paperwhite! Both have exceptional reviews, and even though it feels like a large amount of money upfront (especially around Christmas time), the fact that kindle books are generally cheaper (or can be downloaded for free) really helped justify the decision for me. Ultimately it came down to the fact Amazon had a 20% offer on at the time, and the Paperwhite had a much shorter lead time
I've been enjoying my Kindle Basic (2022) though I am not used to the e-ink ghosting, it still is an amazing little device. Using the free 3 month trial of Kindle Unlimited too! So much to read on one little device!
This model really is the bomb. Amazon changing its stance on epub has made a huge difference. Being able email epubs to your device does away with the need for cables or a computer, a bonus. I have the denim version. The increase in space is a bonus definitely a better value proposition than the basic Paperwhite. I love the fact it can fit in one hand comfortably and is my ereader on the go. I just need to decide if I want to add stickers to the back to personalise it 😆 🤣.
@CriminOlly if you havnt done it yet. Consider purchasing a clear gel cover. That way you can put photos, postcards, a stickers unstuck under the gel cover and change the look depending on your mood. A "Crjme, pulp, Horror sticker" would be nice?
If you get you kindle books off your account via calibre, deregister the kindle, then start it, the adds are not there and you use the book your reading as title page. Basically amazon deliberately block features when you register the device, for a few extra quid.
I did a bit of an ereader splurge for Christmas buying a new Kobo Libra 2 and this new basic Kindle. Both were on sale here in Canada and although I am still a dedicated Kobo user, I do like the basic Kindle. I use it mainly for the few titles not available on Kobo or a sale title. I loaded the Kindle with the complete Ian Fleming James Bond books for $1.99 shortly after I got it as a convenience although I already own them in paperback to justify my indulgence😄.
Pretty soon you're going to have stacks of Kindles in the attic. I had one of the basic Kindles a million years ago and it seems like the quality has improved.
My favorite kindle is so old and I don’t remember what it’s called but it’s very small. Like 5 inches by 6. The size is why it’s great. It fits everywhere pocket purse etc. I’m going to be devastated when it dies. Thanks for keeping us up to date on kindles as they’re such a big part of reading now.
Thank you for showing it fits in pants pockets in the other video! That's a major selling point for me. I was wondering if it'll still fit inside pockets even with the 20$ case on it. Thank you again! 😃
I love my little basic Kindle which I bought in the lovely denim blue colour. It's very light and compact. The only thing missing for me is the warm light feature, I read on dark mode instead when needed. I also have an Oasis on which I read at home.
Yeah I think of the warm light as a nice to have rather than essential. The thing that had stopped me getting one of these before was the lower screen resolution. Now they've upped that I think this is a pretty great device. I was tempted by the blue one!
@@CriminOllyBlog Yes, the resolution is great, and some people prefer the recessed screen because it means one less layer. I do love the blue colour, it's a change from the usual black.
Yes, I like the recessed screen (just lacks the glass overlay) for a number of reasons: clarity of image, more resistant to fingerprints (though harder to clean without damage), easier to hold without inadvertent page turns, lighter weight.
I have the kindle base model and the scribe. The scribe I use at home and the base goes in a pocket when I am on the go. Would like the warm light but since I won’t be using it in the dark so really no worries.
I think the Scribe and the Base is a killer combo. I actually didn't even realise it lacked the warm light until someone mentioned it in the comments. It's one of those features which is impressive but not necessarily that useful (to me at least!)
I love the kindle paperwhite 11th generation in agave green BUT I am a smaller woman and it is quite large. I love the warm feature on it but it’s simply uncomfortable. I just ordered the kindle basic in black and the plan is to use that one on the go and the paperhwhite at home. If I end up not using the PW, I will most likely sell it!
I've still got an old junker with the keyboard, so the screen on this is quite large compared to that. I've used one of these and have been thinking of upgrading, but I just dont like the price for what it is. They do feel quite cheap. Might wait until they go on sale.
@CriminOlly Well I'm not sure which way to go. On one end I would like the the scribe but on the other I have a smaller iPad that has 130gb and kinda want to use that as a Kindle/nook only thing is it's definitely heavier. Ugh so not sure what to do 😕
I changed my e-Reader from Paperwhite 3 to Kobo Libra 2, and now I have Boox Leaf. But when i see kindle basic 2022 i wanna down grade to it, I miss small size and kinda missing the feeling of throwing a compact kindle around the house
Hey! I think the eco system part is really important. Here in the UK the kindle one is much stronger, you can buy Kobos but I don't think the store has as much in it as the Amazon one
Hey, I was wondering if this version of kindle can invert the back lighting? I prefer my paper white with black background and white lettering. Thanks.
So what is your multiple kindle setup. Do you leave them all on with WiFi in different areas to update your reading progress? Do you leave them all charging?
I need to work that out, but I think it will be: Scribe for focussed reading downstairs Paperwhite for reading in bed Basic for reading on the go I don't leave them all charging (as the battery life on all of them is so great) but I do keep them connected to wifi so they stay synced
I also have a kindle, my daily driver(reader), but there is always the feeling of being robed when I see the phisical book priced the same as the kindle edition. Are there any other that feel the same? I mean the ebook has no logistics overhead(except data transfer when buying).
Yeah I know what you mean. I think 95% of the Kindle books I've bought have been ones I've got on the deals they have where they're like 99p. The fact that new releases are the same (or even more) than physical books is kind of shocking
@@CriminOllyBlog Thank you. I look forward to your video because now and then I think of getting a kindle because there are some books you can only get there, that my library does not carry, etc.
I’m using a Paperwhite dripping with the bile and ichor of a thousand years, well, okay, four-five years, and have been loading epubs into it this afternoon via the iOS share function. I’d expect the new Basic to do the same, unless I missed something.
It's cute, but for a regular price of $130 and $100 on sale...Pass. I have 2 Kindle Fires which are cheaper, and for portability, I have the app on my phone. I like the unboxing and review info, though! And I'll continue to love KU.

There are definitely some benefits to the PW and if I had to choose one Kindle that is the one I'd have.
One of the great things about Amazon is that you can usually make 5 monthly payments, so it's a little easier to make a purchase that way.

There is a way you can reduce ghosting by setting the screen to fully refresh on every turn, but it does use slightly more battery think
@@CriminOllyBlog thank you!
*It’s so teeny & cute* Reminds me of the old Nook design.
It is super cute!

Amazon is tempting me with the $75 dollar price tag. Thanks for the walkthrough definitely something to consider.
A kindle full of Bond sounds pretty awesome
A great Kindle for travel or taking on the go! I have the Paperwhite and love it, but this one is so cute! 😅
Yeah I really do think that will be what I use it for - it will stay in my backpack for when I'm out

Yeah I do think they've become a near essential part of modern reading
Just got the PaperWhite Denim blue!(just made an unboxing as well) and I’m loving it. E-Readers really are something

I think you'll really notice the difference when you do upgrade

I def need my huge kindle. Don't mind the size, but this one is great when low on space.
It fits in my pocket which is a big plus!
I prefer the kindle basic b/c the screen doesn’t feel like you’re staring at your phone. Much better on the eyes than kindle paperwhite.
Yeah the screen is very nice
do you feel that the contrast and readability is better than the PW? Since there isn't an extra layer (the flush screen that the PW has).
