I’ve never used the paper you used but I have used wet/dry sand paper on glass sheets that came out of an old storm door. I’m going to get this paper and give it a shot. Thank you!!!

I really wish I'd known about this two years ago, Jonathan. When I first started, I found it to be a very confusing subject, which has resulted in me going down the rabbit hole of water stones and diamond stones. As much as I like the two variations that I now own, as a mature student, it would have helped me learn faster and gain good technique if I'd have found this method first. I dread to think how much I've spent... money I really could have done with saving and put into other tools I needed. Great video and I just know this system will help a lot of people.

    • @BRENDANTHERED
      @BRENDANTHERED 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I wouldnt dismiss those other accessories, as they both have their own benefits. Diamond cuts faster than anything and waterstones develop a slurry, both can act to one's advantage.

      @@BRENDANTHERED. Didn’t even see this.
Please, understand that I haven’t dismissed those other choices, only that this system works very well and gives great results. In my experience, water stones are very messy and diamond stones are a hell of a lot of of money, again, in comparison to the Scary Sharp System. If you haven’t used it, it actually cuts very well (especially the 100 micron film) and leaves a beautiful mirror finish with the 1 micron film. It’s a great system at a very affordable price and having used it more since I made the original comment, I’m more convinced than ever.

I use 3/8 inch polycarbonate sheets instead of the float glass. It is dead flat, cuts with a table saw, and is very hard to break. I also make my flats about 18-niches long. That leaves enough extra length fo have a good starting approach for the honing jig.

Ok, you need to show all the “Billy-Bob Redneck Bubba” that shop at “the Walmart” or Home Depot how to do this on their out of the box adequate chisels. Helping a neighbor and his was from a local store and he never sharpened it. As in NEVER. I drove back home and got my tools. I didn’t let him use them, but he could touch them. I thought about trying, and I am NOT the person to do this. So thanks. P.S. we use blades to cut real things, stop it with the paper test. I've been doing a lot of sharpening, and I just realized my flattening stone that I use to flatten my water stones is no longer flat! Can I use the 300 grit/40 micron 3M micro lapping film to flatten my water stones and flattening stone (if I only pull in one direction)?
I'm also hoping to use my float glass to flatten the sole of my Japanese hand planes, but after your very helpful video I'm thinking I'll need to get some other adhesive backed sand paper for that purpose. Is that right?

I saw you skipped the yellow (1200 grit) since they send 3 pieces of glass and 7 papers. Is that what you recommend I skip when setting mine up?

3m makes diamond lapping film. I havent tried it yet, but the reviews are positive. The different sharpening stones require maintenance and this does not. In some cases the flattening stones are over $200. No brainer!

Welp, I ordered the honing guide, the glass and sand paper. I’ve be been in the market now for a while for a sharpening system. Was going to go with the diamond plates, but didn’t wanna spend the money. It looks like this system will work well. And for 70 bucks, it’s right where I wanna be.

Is there a reason 1200 grit (yellow) was skipped? 600 to 1800 isn't too big of a jump in grits?

So with all the sheets you can get, is it only 3-4 that I would use? Just trying to figure out how many pieces of float glass I would need to get so I have enough for each piece of sandpaper I would be using.

Gonna get this to get some even higher grits. Also, you answered a major question I've had. I have the same angle jig and thought it couldn't do narrow chisels because I was always using the top part (where you would put a plane iron) I had no idea it could accept chisels in the lower part. So thanks for that!

Help guys. I have a flea market plane iron. I flattened the back and used a honing guide on some 150 grit sandpaper to prepare the iron for honing. I was doing that and used two sheets of sand paper and for the life of me can't get a burr on the back. I thought ok maybe I just can't see it but after running it on my 400 grit water stone for a few minutes, still no burr. They take off material but there is no burr on the back and the iron doesn't feel any sharper.

Thank you, nice explanation! It occurred to me that a person could make their lapping paper supplies last longer by cutting it to width just a fraction greater than their bevel roller wheels or their widest chisel, planer or jointer blade (rather than the width of the whole float glass sheet).

Nice. When I first started into handtools, I used sandpaper (scary sharp) but eventually abandoned it for diamond plates and waterstones. However, in the next couple months I will be teaching an introduction to handplanes class at a local store. Although it won't be dedicated to sharpening, I will certainly cover that aspect. In that regard, I ordered the set of 3 glass plates and 3M paper from Talylor toolworks from your video link. I figure that will be a nice introduction to sharpening to show to newbies for only about $50 that will include everything they need. May even add that to the price of the class and make them up for the students. At any rate, thanks for the video and for reminding me of this sharpening method that I hadn't thought about for years.

I have used this method since the 70's. I showed a friend who owns a barber shop how to sharpen her clipper blades. She had been told that they couldn't be sharpened and had thrown them out. She does all her blades now and was really ticked that she had thrown out so many blades over the years. I can sharpen almost anything on this with the correct hand skill.

This is great. I've been using my King water stones for a very long time. They work great on chisels (finest grit 6000), but with my venture into handplaning, I need better as the stones are getting pretty thin. Was looking at Shapton glass backed stones and just haven't been able to pull the trigger. This is a superbly viable option. I get 3/8" float glass from a friend as remnants. Fist-bumps, hugs, high fives @ you. :-)
